Kentucky football lands a top defensive lineman from the transfer portal

Kentucky lands a big time defensive lineman from the transfer portal.

Kentucky football coach Mark Pope and his staff have been very busy working to add players from the transfer portal to replace the ones they lost this offseason. On Saturday, they landed one of the bigger names in defensive lineman David Gusta per On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Gusta originally committed to Fresno State as a three star recruit out of California. He quickly changed his commitment to Washington State, however, and has played there for the past three years.

In 2024, Gusta recorded 21 tackles, including three for a loss. He added a sack as well. He’s considered one of the top defensive linemen in the portal for his ability to play the run. At 6’3″ and over 300 lbs, he can play all over the line and was graded as one of the best interior lineman in the country.

It’s a big addition for Stoops and Kentucky, and he should be a plug and play defender. Fans should be excited about this one.

Texas A&M hosted two transfer defensive linemen on Thursday

Texas A&M is hosted two of the top-ranked defensive linemen from the transfer portal on Thursday

Texas A&M’s transfer portal success isn’t strictly based on numbers. Still, it is based on the quality of players at nearly every position, especially at wide receiver, after coach Mike Elko and his staff landed three commitments, including NC State transfer WR KC Concepcion.

However, after losing defensive linemen Nic Scourton, Shemar Turner, and Shemar Stewart to the 2025 NFL Draft, Elko and his staff landed three edge rushers but still need interior D-line depth.

This week, it was reported that Texas A&M would host former Washington State DL David Gusta. According to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, former Iowa State defensive lineman Tyler Onyedim joined Gusta to visit College Station on Thursday afternoon.

Gusta recorded 21 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, and six quarterback hurries for the Cougars. He is one of the better athletes at his size (6-2, 302 pounds).

Onyedim produced 90 tackles, three sacks, and 12 tackles for loss during the previous four seasons. A notable athlete, Onyedim finished the 2024 season with an impressive 72.4 run defensive grade and 62.7 coverage grade, according to Pro Football Focus.

Texas A&M will reportedly host Washingon State transfer defensive tackle

Texas A&M will reportedly host the top-ranked defensive lineman in the transfer portal on Thursday

Texas A&M coach Mike Elko’s inaugural season ended at 8-5 and a disappointing loss to USC in the Las Vegas Bowl, as the Aggies hoped to enter the offseason with some momentum before falling to the Trojans 35-31 in the final seconds of the game.

While A&M’s 1-4 finish on the year is undoubtedly problematic, Elko and his staff have assembled an impressive transfer portal haul over the last month, led by three wide receiver additions, including former NC State WR KC Concepcion.

However, Texas A&M’s defensive line needs starting talent after Nic Scourton, Shemar Stewart, and Shemar Turner declared for the NFL Draft. So far, Elko has added three edge rushers, but the interior is thin, and the depth remains an issue.

247Sports’ Andrew Hattersley reported on Wednesday that Washington State transfer defensive tackle David Gusta will visit Texas A&M on Thursday. The third-ranked transfer defensive lineman is coming off a productive 2024 season.

Gusta recorded 21 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, and six quarterback hurries for the Cougars. He is one of the better athletes at his size (6-2, 302 pounds).

Texas A&M’s 5th-ranked transfer portal class includes ten commitments, and adding a player like Gusta would strengthen the Aggie defensive line going into the spring football season.
