Michigan State hockey set to have six NHL draftees on roster in 2023-24

MSU is set to have six players on the roster that have been drafted into the NHL

Adam Nightingale has done an outstanding job retooling and rebuilding Michigan State’s roster after taking over for Danton Cole in 2022. It is evident in the way that the Spartans are accumulating NHL draft picks on the roster.

The Spartans are set to have six NHL draftees on their roster as they enter the 2023-24 season, which will be the second for Nightingale as the head man in East Lansing.

As the 2023 NHL Entry Draft has concluded, take a look at who will be on the upcoming roster that has been drafted into the NHL:

Michigan State sophomore defenseman David Gucciardi drafted by Washington Capitals

MSU defenseman David Gucciardi has been selected by the Washington Capitals in the 2022 NHL Draft

David Gucciardi joined the Michigan State hockey program for the 2021-22 season and quickly became a household name for his play on the blue line during his freshman season. Now, a young player on the rise within the Michigan State program, he has a new feather to put in his cap. Gucciardi was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals.

In 36 games, Gucciardi recorded 5 goals and 6 assists. He will be a key cog in helping new coach Adam Nightingale rebuild the Spartan hockey program.

Michigan State hockey defenseman David Gucciardi wins Big Ten first star of the week

MSU d-man David Gucciardi was named the Big Ten’s first star of the week!

Michigan State’s hockey program is filled with young talent that is now starting to gel together. The Spartans are off to an 11-8-1 start and only building momentum.

Freshman defenseman David Gucciardi showed Spartan Nation what they have to be excited about as it regards to the Spartans future on the ice. Gucciardi was named this past week’s Big Ten First Star of the Week for his performance in the Great Lakes Invitational for the Spartans.

The Spartans fell to No. 3 ranked Western Michigan, but beat No. 20 ranked Michigan Tech last week. In those games, Gucciardi scored 3 of the Spartans 4 goals, earning him this honor.
