Patriots longtime captain defends Jerod Mayo’s controversial comments

Longtime Patriots captain David Andrews defends Jerod Mayo’s “white lines” comment

New England Patriots center David Andrews did not take issue with coach Jerod Mayo’s “white lines” comments.

The coach was responding to a question asking when the blame should be on the players and not the coaches for mistakes made on the field. Mayo indicated that it was the players’ responsibility once they crossed the white lines. He also added that it was his job to continue to prepare them.

His comments were met with plenty of scrutiny on social media. Linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley defended Mayo in a social media post, and Andrews did the same on an episode of the “Quick Snap Podcast”.

“That’s the truth, though. Coaches can’t play the game. Bill would always say that stuff, too. ‘I can’t play the game for you. I can’t do that.’ And there is some truth to that,” said Andrews. “…There’s going to come points in games as players where something’s going to be unscripted. They’re going to do a new blitz. The offense is going to have a new formation. The coaches can prepare you and teach you all the rules, or whatever your adjustments may be, but you have to execute those.

“I’ve always thought, I’ve never gone into a game really and been like, ‘Man the coaches failed us.’ They work hard. They put in so much time, really it’s always about us. It is about the players.”

It might help matters if the Patriots were winning football games. However, they are currently 3-9 on the season with Andrews’ season-ending injury part of what has been a difficult year for the organization.

It has been a bumpy road for Mayo as a head coach, but when it comes to his post-game comments, two of the most respected players in the locker have chosen to back him publicly.

How Patriots QB Drake Maye earned respect from team captain

Drake Maye’s performance against the Titans turned heads in the Patriots’ locker room

New England Patriots center David Andrews noted that rookie quarterback Drake Maye has earned his respect, as well as the respect of others in the locker room.

The rookie has reignited the quarterback position for the organization. He has recorded 770 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions on the season, along with recording a rushing touchdown.

It’s evident the rookie is making a strong impression on his teammates, and Andrews is no exception. He gave the quarterback praise in a recent episode of the “Quick Snap Podcast.”

“I appreciated his effort, whatever you want to call it, to get out there and play this week,” said Andrews. “I think that sends a great message to the team, and it shows what kind of player he is. …There’s a lot of things at the quarterback position that people don’t value as tough, but watching true professionals play the game.

“It’s like, not showing you’re hurt, not doing different things, like standing in there when you know you’re about to take a hit and delivering the ball. Him not playing scared after the concussion. That was some toughness shown by him.”

Multiple players have praised Maye this season. Veteran defensive tackle Davon Godchaux compared him to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen after Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans.

Maye’s ability to win over the locker room so early has been impressive. It’s a positive development for a young quarterback who is expected to be the future of the franchise.

Patriots officially placing two offensive lineman on injured reserve

David Andrews and Caedan Wallace are going on injured reserve

New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo announced center David Andrews and rookie offensive tackle Caedan Wallace would go on injured reserve Friday.

It was announced on Wednesday that Andrews would be undergoing season-ending surgery on his shoulder. Meanwhile, Wallace is dealing with an ankle injury. There’s still a chance he could return this season.

These are major developments for the offensive line. Wallace got his first NFL start against the New York Jets in Week 3, and he has played in all four games so far this season. Andrews is a longtime team captain and a key veteran piece on the line.

This is just more unfortunate news for an offensive line that has been decimated by both injuries and inconsistent play. The Patriots need to improve immediately along the offensive front, but they currently have few options for doing so.

Patriots OC gets honest about implications of losing David Andrews

Alex Van Pelt weighs in on the magnitude of losing David Andrews

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt discussed the implications of the injury to center David Andrews. He acknowledged that Andrews’ injury is a big loss for the offensive line.

Andrews is set to undergo season-ending surgery on his shoulder and be put on injured reserve. This leaves a big gap on the Patriots’ offensive line with their primary anchor and longtime captain gone for the season.

Van Pelt indicated that quarterback Jacoby Brissett might need to take on more pre-snap responsibilities. He also spoke about what losing Andrews means to the team.

“You can’t fill those shoes with one foot,” said Van Pelt.

This injury could affect the outlook for the rest of the Patriots’ season.

The organization’s offensive line has already struggled through the first four games. Losing Andrews will put additional pressure on others to step up and perform on the unit.

Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett told David Andrews this about his injury

Jacoby Brissett says David Andrews considered playing injured, before eventually deciding on season-ending surgery

New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett revealed a private conversation he had with David Andrews after hearing the news that the injured center would need shoulder surgery.

Andrews injured his shoulder in the Patriots’ Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Surgery would mean the end of Andrews’ season, and he had a hard time coming to terms with that early on. The Patriots’ offensive line has struggled this season, and Andrews was so tough that he considered delaying his surgery and playing injured.

However, Brissett helped talk the veteran offensive lineman down from that decision by encouraging him to err on the side of caution.

“It’s tough when a guy like that goes down, but he’s not going down with anything minor,” Brissett told reporters, per a team-provided video, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London. “I talked to him this morning. He’s like, ‘I think I’m going to try (to play).’ I was like, ‘Dave. C’mon, man. As much as I would love you to.'”

The loss of Andrews is undoubtedly a big one for the offensive line. Yet, Brissett’s words were a strong reminder that sometimes life itself is bigger than the game of football.

Report: Patriots beloved captain expected to undergo season-ending surgery

David Andrews is expected to undergo season-ending surgery for a shoulder injury

New England Patriots longtime center David Andrews is expected to undergo season-ending surgery for the shoulder injury he sustained in the Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news on Wednesday.

Losing Andrews is devastating for the Patriots. He’s a longtime locker room leader and one of the best offensive players on the roster. It stings even more considering how badly the offensive line has struggled this season.

Things could get significantly worse without Andrews anchoring a unit composed of mostly backups. With that said, Andrews opting to get the surgery now would give him a chance to return healthy in 2025, if he wants to continue playing.

Veteran Nick Leverett will likely get the nod to start at center for the rest of the season for the Patriots. He had some snap miscues during the preseason, but he seemed to have cleaned that up in the three quarters he played against the 49ers.

One has to wonder if Andrews’ injury will add to the Patriots’ hesitance to hand the reins over to rookie quarterback Drake Maye as a starter.

Patriots C David Andrews’ injury leaves him with one of two options

David Andrews reportedly needs surgery for his shoulder injury, which means he’ll have a tough choice to make.

Longtime center David Andrews went down with a shoulder injury in the New England Patriots’ crushing defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4.

After getting multiple opinions, the Patriots’ captain will need surgery to fix the issue, but his decision to do so would mean the end of his 2024 season, per MassLive’s Mark Daniels.

That leaves Andrews with two options: get the surgery now and return healthier next season, or put it off until the end of the season and hope it won’t compromise his chances of playing in 2025.

The veteran offensive lineman is weighing both options as the Patriots turn the page to a divisional showdown with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Andrews doesn’t want to be a liability to the team. So if it’s a situation where the injury is too painful to play through effectively, he’ll likely get the surgery and rehab for a 2025 return.

It’s a devastating blow to the Patriots considering all of the struggles they’ve already faced along the offensive front. They’re either getting a less than 100-percent version of Andrews or not getting him at all.

Latest update on Patriots C David Andrews’ shoulder injury

Here’s the latest on David Andrews’ injury

New England Patriots center David Andrews is getting multiple medical opinions on his shoulder injury, according to a report from MassLive’s Karen Guregian and Mark Daniels.

The center suffered the injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Andrews has been one of the few dependable players on a Patriots offensive line that has been in flux for a few seasons. He played all 17 games last season, which included every offensive snap. Consistency has been one of his greatest traits in the 124 career games he’s played in during his NFL tenure.

An injury to Andrews would be a major blow to a Patriots offensive line that has struggled throughout the season. His veteran experience, as well as his ability to call out protections, have been vital for the Patriots.

Guregian and Daniels wrote:

Patriots center David Andrews, who left Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury and didn’t return, is getting multiple medical opinions on his shoulder injury before making a decision, according to a source.

Nick Leverett is the next man up for the Patriots at center. It’s a rough turn of events for a Patriots team playing with mostly backups on the offensive line.

Key Patriots players ruled out of game vs 49ers with injuries

Three key players officially ruled out for the Patriots

New England Patriots safety Kyle Dugger and offensive tackle Caedan Wallace have been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Both players are dealing with ankle injuries.

This is certainly not ideal, as the Patriots are already suffering injuries on the offensive line. Center David Andrews headed to the locker room in the first quarter, and he was also ruled out for the game.

Andrews is a huge loss as a team captain at a position lacking in depth for the Patriots.

The Wallace and Dugger injuries are also both notable. Dugger has been a key player on the Patriots defense, a unit that has struggled over the past couple of weeks. Wallace has taken quality offensive line reps at the battered left tackle position.

All three injuries will be worth monitoring throughout the week. The offensive line is already a mess, and the defense is missing Christian Barmore, Anfernee Jennings and Ja’Whaun Bentley. The team can’t afford more players to go down.

Patriots C David Andrews heads to locker room after injury vs 49ers

David Andrews left the field early with an injury

New England Patriots center David Andrews was spotted heading to the locker room after the first offensive drive in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Per an update from the team, Andrews is officially questionable to return with a shoulder injury.

The Patriots are already down multiple offensive linemen. Cole Strange has been out with a knee injury, and both Vederian Lowe and Michael Jordan were ruled out with injuries against San Francisco.

If Andrews misses time, veteran center Nick Leverett would be the next man up for the Patriots. The team struggled in the preseason whenever Andrews wasn’t on the field, particularly with the snap communication. Multiple mishandled balls led to fumbles for the Patriots.

This could be a major problem for the Patriots. San Francisco’s defensive line is one of the most formidable units in the league, and it’s spearheaded by former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa.
