Tennessee Titans’ practice squad protections for Divisional Round

For once, the Titans might not need to dip into their practice squad for help.

The Tennessee Titans have chosen the four players they will protect this week ahead of the divisional-round matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The four players are defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, quarterback Kevin Hogan, center Daniel Munyer and running back Jordan Wilkins.

While the Titans have had to dip into their practice squad quite a bit in a year that has seen the team deal with a ridiculous amount of injuries, leading to their fielding an NFL record 91 players, Tennessee might not have to this week.

That’s because the team is the healthiest it has been all season long. Not only is Derrick Henry set to make his return, but the team had just three players on its injury report on Tuesday, and all of them practiced.

My, how far we’ve come.

Tennessee will return to action after a first-round bye when they host the Bengals on Saturday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

Colts sign DE Da’Shawn Hand to the practice squad

The Colts signed DE Da’Shawn Hand to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed defensive end Da’Shawn Hand to the practice squad and released cornerback Darqueze Dennard from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Hand worked out for the Colts on Monday following the team’s huge 27-17 win over the New England Patriots. He joins a defensive end room that consists of Kwity Paye, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Isaac Rochell, Kemoko Turay and Ben Banogu.

Hand, 26, was a fourth-round pick with the Detroit Lions in the 2018 NFL draft. The Alabama product was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2018 when he had 3.0 sacks and four tackles for loss in 13 games (eight starts).

Hand then played in just three games during the 2019 season while dealing with various injuries and appeared in 10 games during the 2020 season. He was released by the Lions on Nov. 30 after appearing in just three games thus far in 2021.

In 29 career games (11 starts), Hand has recorded 54 tackles (39 solo), 3.0 sacks and six tackles for loss.

Ex-Lions DE Da’Shawn Hand signs with the Colts practice squad

Ex-Lions DE Da’Shawn Hand signs with the Indianapolis Colts practice squad

Former Lions defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand is back in the NFL again. Hand signed with the Indianapolis Colts to that team’s practice squad on Tuesday after working out for the team on Monday.

Hand has been a free agent since the Lions released the oft-injured Hand with an injury settlement on November 30th. He had been placed on the IR by Detroit for a second time in the 2021 season, which meant he was not eligible to return for Detroit. But the injury settlement allowed Hand to sign with another team once he could pass a physical.

A fourth-round pick from Alabama in the 2018 NFL draft, Hand missed more games (30) than he played in Detroit (29) due to a litany of separate injuries. He was placed on Detroit’s IR list five times, all for unrelated injuries, in his three-plus seasons with the Lions. Hand recorded two tackles in three games with Detroit in 2021.

Lions pull the plug on Da’Shawn Hand, will release the DE with an injury settlement

Hand made at least one trip to injured reserve in each of his four seasons with the Lions

The end of the line for Da’Shawn Hand with the Detroit Lions comes in the most fitting fashion. The Lions are releasing the oft-injured defensive end with an injury settlement off the team’s injured reserve list.

Hand was placed on injured reserve for a second time this season by the Lions, which ended any chance he could come back and play for Detroit in 2021. But the release allows him to sign with another team. Hand is playing out the final year of his rookie contract but is now free to latch on anywhere he chooses.

A fourth-round pick out of Alabama in 2018, Hand flashed legit talent as a pass rusher. But injuries were a constant issue. He was placed on IR in all four years in Detroit with different injuries each time. Hand played in just 29 of a possible 59 games with the Lions.

The injury settlement frees up about $288,000 in salary cap room.

Lions place Da’Shawn Hand on IR, sign OL Tommy Kraemer to active roster

It is Hand’s fifth trip to injured reserve since the start of the 2018 season

No, this is not a duplicate post. But it sure has the feel of something we’ve written before, unfortunately.

The Detroit Lions have placed defensive end Da’Shawn Hand on the injured reserve list with a groin injury. He was removed from the Lions’ Week 12 injury list with the roster move. Hand played just three games in 2021, recording two total tackles in between stints on the IR. It is Hand’s fifth trip to injured reserve since the start of the 2018 season, when he was a fourth-round pick out of Alabama.

To replace Hand on the 53-man roster, the Lions signed rookie offensive lineman Tommy Kraemer. The undrafted guard/center from Notre Dame played 33 reps as a practice squad elevation in Week 11 after starting right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai left with a concussion. Vaitai is not expected to play against the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving.

Snap count notes: Lions leaned heavily on extra OL in Week 10

Snap count notes: Lions leaned heavily on using extra OL in the Week 10 tie with the Steelers

On a week where the Lions unceremoniously waived No. 2 tight end Darren Fells, the Detroit offense leaned heavily on replacing Fells’ old role in an unconventional way. Detroit used a sixth lineman as a de facto blocking tight end extensively in the Week 10 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Between Matt Nelson (18 snaps) and Will Holden (10), the Lions leaned heavily on the “heavy” package. The 28 combined snaps were more than Fells played in any game through the first eight weeks. Nelson, the team’s starting right tackle the first eight games, left the game with an injury, which led to Holden’s reps.

With the starting offensive line all playing in each of the team’s 71 snaps, the Lions OL was busy. So was tight end T.J. Hockenson, who played in 67 reps. the new No. 2 TE, Brock Wright, was on the field for 36.

At running back, it was almost exclusively the D’Andre Swift show. Swift played a career-high 66 snaps. Without regular starter Jamaal Williams, the Lions gave three early reps to rookie Jermar Jefferson as the between-the-tackles runner. Jefferson suffered an injury of his own at the end of his 28-yard touchdown run and did not return. Godwin Igwebuike played just four snaps on offense, though he did play a season-high 27 special teams reps.

On defense, two Lions never left the field: LB Alex Anzalone and CB Amani Oruwariye. They both played all 87 snaps.

The cornerback reps after Oruwariye were jumbled by injuries. Jerry Jacobs left after playing all of the first 57 snaps. Former Steelers practice squad CB Mark Gilbert played the remaining 30 as the other outside CB opposite Oruwariye in his first defensive action in Detroit.

Along the defensive line, Da’Shawn Hand played the most. Hand played 68 reps. That’s significantly more than the next DEs on the list, Nick Williams (39) and Michael Brockers (38). Second-round rookie Levi Onwuzurike played just 26. Detroit didn’t use the nose tackle as much as normal vs. Pittsburgh, with third-round rookie Alim McNeill playing 15 and John Penisini in for 14.

Lions activate DE Da’Shawn Hand in a series of roster moves

Lions activate DE Da’Shawn Hand in a series of roster moves that also includes elevating two players from the practice squad

The Detroit Lions made some roster moves in advance of Sunday’s Week 8 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. The most significant of those moves is the return of defensive end Da’Shawn Hand to the active roster.

The Lions activated Hand from the injured reserve list, where he has been since the start of the season. Hand was designated for return with his ongoing groin injury earlier this month and he came through practices in good enough shape to earn his way back onto the 53-man roster.

In addition to Hand, safety Jalen Elliott and tight end Brock Wright will also be in uniform on Sunday when the Lions host the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8. Elliott and Wright were elevated from the practice squad to the active list. It’s the second week in a row for each player.

Detroit also brought back defensive lineman Eric Banks to the practice squad, releasing CB Shakur Brown to make room. Banks was waived from the active roster during the week to help create the space for Hand to return.

Da’Shawn Hand returns to practice, designated for return from Lions’ IR

The Lions have 21 days to activate Hand or lose him for the rest of the season to IR with his groin injury

More reinforcements to the Detroit Lions defensive line could be coming soon. The Lions officially designated DE Da’Shawn Hand for return from the injured reserve on Wednesday.

Hand attended practice and worked out with the team. Detroit now has 21 days to either activate Hand back to the 53-man roster or lose him for the rest of the season to injured reserve. He has yet to play in 2021 with a groin injury suffered during preseason.

Hand, a fourth-round pick in 2018 out of Alabama, has flashed some pass-rushing talent in his time in Detroit. Keeping him on the field has been an issue; Hand has played in just 26 of a possible 54 games due to various injuries and has made an appearance on the team’s IR in each of his four seasons.

He joins LT Taylor Decker and DE Kevin Strong as players designated to return from the Lions IR list. Decker and Strong were designated for return last week but have yet to rejoin the 53-man active roster.

Lions injury tracker: All the players on injured reserve entering Week 6

The updated Detroit Lions injury tracker includes 8 players who would be starters currently on IR

It’s been a very rough season for the Detroit Lions. Winless through five weeks, the team has suffered through a nasty wave of injuries to key players. And the list keeps growing.

Last week’s sobering look at how many players are unavailable to the team due to either injury or dead cap has expanded, unfortunately. Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow will miss the rest of the season with a toe injury that required surgery. He was out for Week 5 as well but now officially joins the throng of Lions on the IR list.

Here’s the updated cadre of Lions either on the IR or non-football injury reserved lists as of October 13th:

  • Taylor Decker, starting left tackle
  • Frank Ragnow, starting center
  • Tyrell Williams, starting wide receiver
  • Quintez Cephus, starting wide receiver (in place of Williams)
  • Tyrell Crosby, offensive tackle (would start in place of Decker)
  • Tim Boyle, backup quarterback
  • Romeo Okwara, starting outside linebacker
  • Jeff Okudah, starting cornerback
  • Ifeatu Melifonwu, starting CB (in place of Okudah)
  • Da’Shawn Hand, defensive end
  • Kevin Strong, defensive end
  • Joel Heath, defensive end
  • Shaun Dion Hamilton, linebacker
  • Charlie Taumopeau, tight end (NFI)
  • Hunter Bryant, tight end (NFI)

That’s eight different players who would be starting right now, six of them regular projected starters. The list includes the team’s two best offensive linemen, the top wideout, the No. 1 and No. 2 cornerbacks and the WR leader in receiving yards after five games.
