3 former Chiefs players named finalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2023

Three former #Chiefs players are among the 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced modern-era finalists for the Class of 2023. A total of three former Kansas City Chiefs players are among those 15 finalists selected.

The next step in the selection process is for the committee to elect up to five modern-era players from this group of 15 finalists. Finalists will need 80% of the vote from the selection committee in order to be chosen for the 2023 class. Remember, at one point the modern-era player pool was comprised of 129 players. The 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame class will be decided and announced during the week leading up to Super Bowl LVII.

Below you can find a quick look at each of the three former Chiefs who were selected as finalists:

Darrelle Revis named finalist for Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023

Revis Island is one step away from being forever enshrined in Canton

Darrelle Revis is one step away from being enshrined forever in Canton, Ohio. The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced their 15 modern-day finalists for the Class of 2023 and Revis Island has made the cut.

Revis now advances to the final stage, which will take place the week before Super Bowl LVII. The voting committee will meet to discuss the 15 modern-era finalists and will initially cut the list down to ten and then one more cut to five. Those five will then each be voted on and if they receive 80% of the vote, they are elected into the Hall of Fame.

In eight seasons with the New York Jets, Revis started 108 games, recording 25 interceptions with three touchdowns, including a 100-yard pick-six in 2011. He has 29 career interceptions and was a part of the New England Patriots team that won Super Bowl XLIX.

Some of Revis’ career accolades include:

  • Four-time All-Pro (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014)
  • Seven-time Pro Bowl selection (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015)
  • Member of NFL’s All-Decade Team for 2010s
  • Member of Jets’ Ring of Honor

Revis is one of three first-year eligible players on the list of finalists, along with Dwight Freeney and Joe Thomas.

Darrelle Revis named Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023 semifinalist

Will Revis Island get into Canton on his first attempt?

Darrelle Revis is set to be inducted into the Jets Ring of Honor on Sunday. He’s also one step closer to being a part of football immortality.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame released their list of 28 modern-day semifinalists for the Class of 2023 and the former lockdown cornerback for the Jets is on the list.

Revis is one of five players on the ballot for the first time that have made it to the semifinals. Other first-time eligible players include offensive linemen Jahri Evans and Joe Thomas, defensive lineman Dwight Freeney and linebacker James Harrison.

Revis played eight total seasons for the Jets (2007-2012, 2015-2016) and also played for the Buccaneers (2013), Patriots (2014) and Chiefs (2017).

Revis recorded 29 career interceptions, 25 of them with the Jets. He was a four-time First-Team All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl selection. Revis was a member of the Patriots team that won Super Bowl XLIX.

The 28 semifinalists will be cut to 15 finalists around the holidays. Then the selection committee will vote on those 15 finalists before Super Bowl LVII, where 15 will become 10 and then five. Those five must then receive 80% of the vote to be enshrined.

In addition to the eventual 15 finalists, the committee will vote on the Coach/Contributor nominee Don Coryell as well as the Seniors Committee nominees Chuck Howley, Ken Riley and former Jet Joe Klecko.

3 former Chiefs players named modern-era semifinalists for 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame

A trio of former #Chiefs players has been selected as modern-era semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2023

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced 28 modern-era semifinalists for their 2023 class.

A total of three former Kansas City Chiefs players have been selected as semifinalists. This group was reduced from an initial group of 129 nominees, which included 10 total former Chiefs players. This is the largest number of semifinalists since they adopted the process of reducing the list of nominees back in 2004.

This group will again be reduced to 15 finalists in the coming months. Then, the 49-person selection committee will select up to five modern-era members of the Pro Football Hall Class of 2023 in advance of Super Bowl LVII, with the final reveal coming during the NFL Honors ceremony on Feb. 9.

Here’s a quick look at the three Chiefs players selected as semifinalists:

2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalists include eight former Patriots

Eight ex-Patriots made the cut as semifinalists for the 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

The semifinalists for the 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame class were revealed on Tuesday, and eight of the names on that list were former New England Patriots players.

Of course, the two most noteworthy names from a Patriots perspective were former defensive stars Vince Wilfork and Rodney Harrison, both of whom have already been inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame.

Darrelle Revis, one of the all-time great corners, is also on the list. He spent the brunt of his career serving as a division rival on the New York Jets, but he did sign with the Patriots for a one-and-done Super Bowl season in 2014.

The other names include linebacker James Harrison, receiver Reggie Wayne, running back Fred Taylor, receiver Torry Holt and tight end Henry Ellard.

There were a total of 28 players named as semifinalists, which means ex-Patriots make up a significant portion of the candidates left standing. The next step is whittling the list down to 15 and seeing which players are one step closer to being immortalized in Canton.

Darrelle Revis says ‘the sky is the limit’ for Sauce Gardner

Darrelle Revis says ‘the sky is the limit’ for Sauce Gardner

In Week 12 against the Chicago Bears, the New York Jets will be inducting one of the greatest cornerbacks in the history of the game, Darrelle Revis, into their Ring of Honor. On that same day, he’ll be watching a cornerback that may one day join him in that group, Sauce Gardner.

Revis met with the media Friday in anticipation of his ceremony next week and talked about the Jets’ No. 4 overall pick and said he believes “the sky is the limit” for Gardner.

“I love his game,” Revis said. “I’m a lover of the game itself. It’s a different style of play but at the same time, he’s effective in what he can do. Him and D.J. Reed are doing a great job of being a dynamic duo. In this league, you need that. You need great cover corners and I think he can take on that legacy as being a Jet great.”

Gardner just needs one more interception to tie Revis’ total from his rookie season in 2007 and has half of Revis’ total number of tackles as a rookie. It’s certainly very early to discuss how far Gardner can go in his career, but you can’t argue his effective ness in his first nine games and the potential he is showing as one of the next great shutdown cornerbacks, just like Revis Island.

Darrelle Revis among nine first-year nominees for Pro Football Hall of Fame

Former Jets shutdown cornerback Darrelle Revis is one of nine players nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the first time.

The former 2007 first-round pick (No. 14 overall) spent eight total seasons with the Jets (2007-2012, 2015-2016) and was a four-time first-team All-Pro selection (2009-2011, 2014) as well as a seven-time Pro Bowl selection (2008-2011, 2013-2015). Revis was also selected to the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 2010s.

Revis was considered by many to be the best shutdown cornerback during his time, hence the birth of “Revis Island,” where many wide receivers went and which made many fantasy football players very upset.

Among the 129 nominees, here is the full list of players who are in their first year of eligibility:

CB Darrelle Revis
OT Joe Thomas
DL Dwight Freeney
RB Chris Johnson
OL Jahri Evans
LB NaVorro Bowman
LB James Harrison
DB Kam Chancellor
P Shane Lechler

The ballot will be trimmed to 25 semifinalists in November, then eventually to five finalists. The selection committee will announce the new class on the weekend of Super Bowl LVII, and the enshrinement ceremony will be held in August in Canton, Ohio.

Jets’ best value draft pick in PFF era is an easy choice

#Jets’ best value draft pick in PFF era is an easy choice:

Both the eye test and fancy stats say the same: Darrelle Revis was the New York Jets “best value draft pick” since 2006.

That year is when Pro Football Focus came into existence. The football analytics outlet went back and named that draft selection for each team.

Most in New York would agree it’s Revis for the Jets, one of the best cornerbacks to ever play in the NFL. Regardless of where to take such a player, it’s worth it.

PFF’s numbers even back it up.

Revis was a first-round pick of the Jets back in 2007.

Here’s the breakdown:

While he won his ring with New England, Revis’ best work of his career still came early on with the Jets. His 2009 season is still the single most impressive cornerback year in the PFF era. While shadowing opposing No. 1 receivers, he allowed only 41 catches from 111 targets for 425 yards while generating six interceptions and 23 pass breakups.

Revis did eventually return to the Jets after he got his ring, but his better stint with the team will always be his first one.

During that time, he earned three of his four first-round, All-Pro selections.

Jets legend Darrelle Revis to Mekhi Becton: ‘Ignore the noise’

Jets great Darrelle Revis offered words of encouragement and support to Mekhi Becton.

Darrelle Revis is rooting for Mekhi Becton.

The former Jets cornerback tweeted at Becton on Monday to offer the tackle some advice heading into his third season with Gang Green.

Becton hasn’t had the easiest six months since dislocating his kneecap in Week 1 of the NFL season. He’s endured countless reports about his health, weight and conditioning, and Robert Saleh recently said Becton will fight for the starting left tackle job. Becton has also dealt with countless social media critics while he continues to recover from his injury.

But at least Revis, who has his own injury history and volatile relationship with Jets fans, is on Becton’s side. Revis held out numerous times while playing for the Jets, tore his ACL, was traded to the Buccaneers and signed with the Patriots before returning to the Jets for a second, disappointing stint. He retired with New York in 2018.

Becton clearly appreciated Revis’ show of support. He tweeted back at Revis following the cornerback’s initial tweet.

Revis is right; the 2022 season is huge for Becton.

After a great rookie campaign, Becton missed almost all of 2021 with the aforementioned knee injury, and his failure to return to the field fueled a plethora of rumors about his future with the Jets. George Fant’s solid play in Becton’s absence, coupled with Saleh’s tepid commitment to Becton’s starting role, didn’t help things, either.

If Becton is healthy for 2022, he’ll need to prove to the Jets that he can return to his rookie form. Otherwise, the team may move on from him two years after drafting him 11th overall.
