When Darion Green-Warren committed to Michigan football, it was a big win for the Wolverines. Though he finished his high school career at Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne, he originally played at Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, a powerhouse program that generally feeds top players to USC.

However, Green-Warren never really got any traction in Ann Arbor, having played just a handful of snaps before deciding to transfer following his second year with the program. With four full years of eligibility remaining, he could be an asset to any school that could utilize him, and vice versa.

On Monday, Green-Warren made his choice of school known, announcing that he’s transferring to the University of Nevada.

Green-Warren joins players such as Chuck Filiaga, Andre Seldon, and Anthony Solomon as players who decided to part Ann Arbor for a new opportunity.

Two Michigan football defensive players enter NCAA transfer portal

Best of luck to them. #GoBlue

While players are bound to stay on when things are going good, when it doesn’t appear there’s a role for them, they’re also bound to leave.

Such is the case for two soon-to-be former Wolverines, who stayed on during Michigan football’s 2021 College Football Playoff run, but now that that’s over, are looking, presumably, for a place where they can find more playing time.

On Monday, two players entered the NCAA transfer portal, both on the defensive side of the ball. The first is linebacker Anthony Solomon, who was a longtime target that suddenly appeared to be out of the fray, before the maize and blue started searching for more team speed on the defensive side of the ball following in the 2018 loss to Ohio State. The Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas four-star was in the VIPER rotation. However, despite that position being eradicated with Mike Macdonald taking over defensive coordinator duties from Don Brown, Solomon stayed on. He mostly played special teams snaps throughout the years.

The other is another late addition, this time to the 2020 recruiting class, in Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne four-star cornerback Darion Green-Warren. Green-Warren committed after the early signing period, on Jan. 4, 2020, and was expected to shore up the secondary. However, in his two years with the program, he hasn’t been able to see the field in any form.

With the latter departure, there are plenty of defensive backs who could take his place, including any of the six already signed to the 2022 recruiting class.

Recruitment

Kept things relatively close to the vest throughout his recruitment. Michigan looked like a longshot despite his top six having USC and five eastern schools, including Penn State, MSU, Georgia and Oklahoma.

Was reportedly a USC silent, and didn’t make it to Ann Arbor until Dec. 6, further increasing the look that he wouldn’t be coming to Michigan.

But he announced on Jan. 4 at the All-American Bowl his commitment to the Wolverines, and had signed on Early Signing Day back in December.

Readiness Level

Needs to add some weight, but could be a year one contributor on special teams. Potential starter in year two.

2020 four-star CB commits to Michigan

The Wolverines pulled in a four-star from Southern California to add to the 2020 class on Saturday.

The Wolverines 2020 class grew a little bit on Saturday, adding another big time playmaker in the defensive backfield.

Long has Michigan been looking to add a second corner to its 2020 class, with longtime commit-turned-signee Andre Seldon in the fold, as the first commit in the cycle all the way back in the summer of 2018. But finding a second defensive back out on the edge has taken a little bit longer.

Harbor City (CA) Narbonne four-star CB Darion Green-Warren has long been in the sights of the maize and blue, but he was a little harder to pin down. He released a top six that included USC and five midwestern/southeastern schools, indicating that he wasn’t a lock to remain in Southern California.

Though Nebraska — which often pulls recruits from Southern California — Penn State, MSU, Oklahoma and Georgia were all in the mix, Michigan always retained a shot, but it seemed like a long one since it couldn’t get Green-Warren to Ann Arbor until after the season, as he made his official visit on Dec. 6. But it turns out, that worked out for the maize and blue, as he pledged to the class during the All-American Bowl on Saturday.

According to 247Sports, Green-Warren runs a laser-timed 4.67 40-yard dash, and is ranked via 184th in the country, regardless of position, as the No. 14 cornerback and No. 19 player in the state of California.

He’s the 27th commit for Michigan, and his inclusion pushes the Wolverines from the 13th-ranked class to No. 11 in 2020.
