LSU’s best wins vs. Mississippi State: 2016 season

The LSU football program went through two coaches in 2016, but a close win in Starkville helped their record early on in the season.

The 2016 edition of the LSU-Mississippi State rivalry saw the Tigers pull out a close win in Starkville.

The win helped the Tigers earn one of their wins for their final 8-5 record in 2016. A 23-20 victory over the Bulldogs marked the Tigers’ second straight win after a season-opening loss to the Wisconsin Badgers.

Tigers quarterback Danny Etling finished the game 19-of-30 passing for 215 yards and a touchdown. Running back Leonard Fournette ran the ball 28 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

LSU jumped out to a commanding 14-0 lead after the first quarter, but Mississippi State got a field goal in the second quarter and trailed 23-3 at the half.

Bulldogs quarterback Nick Fitzgerald was 12-of-24 passing for 120 yards and an average of five yards per completion. LSU’s defense held the Bulldogs to just 56 total rushing yards on 32 carries and an average of 1.8 yards per rush.

The Tigers would not score again after their nine points in the second quarter. State added a field goal in the third quarter and then 14 points in the final quarter of play to cut the deficit to just 23-20.

But by then, the Tigers already had the win sealed. Unknown by LSU fans at the time, but this would be the second to last game coached by Les Miles at LSU.  He was let go the week after this game as the Tigers would travel to Auburn and lose 18-13.

The SEC win for the Tigers would help cement their 8-5 record at season’s end. As Ed Orgeron became the interim coach, the Tigers finished the season with a 6-2 record to close out the 2016 season.

The Atlanta Falcons are moving forward without quarterback Danny Etling, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday afternoon.

Etling, 26, was drafted by the New England Patriots out of Purdue back in 2018 and had just returned to the team following a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Entering his third season, Etling was likely behind quarterback Kurt Benkert in the battle for the Falcons’ No. 3 QB spot.

It’s another day and another Atlanta Falcons player joining on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

It’s another day and another Atlanta Falcons player joining on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list. Linebacker Foye Oluokun, who is expected to play a big role this season, becomes the sixth Falcon to be placed on league’s new roster designation, according to ESPN’s Vaughn McClure.

Oluokun joins DT Tyeler Davison, S Jaylinn Hawkins, FB Keith Smith, CB Jamal Carter and QB Danny Etling on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Atlanta has also reportedly waived punter Ryan Allen, which could open things up for rookie Sterling Hofrichter to land the starting punting job in 2020.

Falcons add Tyeler Davison, Danny Etling to reserve/COVID-19 list

The Atlanta Falcons added two more players to the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday, bringing the team’s total up to five players in less than a week.

Defensive tackle Tyeler Davison and QB Danny Etling join cornerback Jamal Carter, safety Jaylinn Hawkins and fullback Keith Smith on the league’s new roster designation, as first reported by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure.

Davison figures to play significant reps next to Grady Jarrett this season, while rotating with Falcons rookie DT Marlon Davidson. Etling was unlikely to make the roster, but has shown some promise competing for the No. 3 QB spot with Kurt Benkert.

It seems Atlanta is doing everything it can to prevent spreading the virus throughout the team, but this is uncharted territory for the NFL. Let’s hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.
