Ron Rivera reveals one of his conditions he told Dan Snyder when taking Redskins job

Ron Rivera is changing the culture in Washington.

Ron Rivera wants it to be about the players.

It’s as simple as that. The new Washington Redskins head coach told the media Thursday during his introductory press conference that he set out a condition for team owner Dan Snyder.

That condition was simple — he wants a player-based culture.

Craig Hoffman of 106.7 The Fan caught some of this: “We have to build culture. We have to build family. If we can do that, we can win.”

Maybe this isn’t to suggest that wasn’t the approach in past regimes, but Rivera’s reputation in this regard remains well known. Character and discipline will clealry take a bigger role under the watchful eye of Rivera.

This all seems quite on brand for Rivera, who has former players openly talking about how great it’s going to be for Redskins players already.

Dan Snyder opens press conference by saying “Happy Thanksgiving”

Team owner Dan Snyder opened the press conference on Thursday by wishing everyone in attendance a “Happy Thanksgiving,” on January 2nd.

Just before the new Washington Redskins head coach, Ron Rivera was brought to the podium on Thursday afternoon for his introductory press conference with the team, owner Dan Snyder said a few words before the media.

While he talked about needs for a culture shift, and his belief that Rivera is the person the bring them, he also made an interesting comment at the very beginning. He wished everyone in attendance a Happy Thanksgiving…

Obviously, the press conference took place on January 2nd, over a month after Thanksgiving took place, and days after Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The way that Snyder said the line seemed like he was intent on making a dry-humored joke, and Rivera’s chuckle in the background suggests that it could have very well been an inside joke.

Maybe you had to be there… Let’s assume it was funny and intentional, and decide to move on.

Best quotes from Ron Rivera’s introductory press conference as Redskins coach

Rivera was introduced as the Redskins head coach, and he had a lot to say about the culture shift in Washington and how they can improve.

The Washington Redskins introduced Ron Rivera as the new head coach of the team on Thursday afternoon, making him the ninth coach since 2000.

The press conference was opened by team owner Daniel Snyder, who introduced the new coach by stating that there was a need for a culture change in Washington, and he believed that Rivera could be the coach to help bring that. Rivera then stepped to the mic and waxed poetic about his desire to implement discipline into the franchise, allowing them to find success in the future.

Here are all of the best quotes from the press conference.

Dan Snyder opened the Redskins’ Ron Rivera press conference by saying ‘Happy Thanksgiving’

It’s Jan. 2.

The Ron Rivera hiring was supposed to instill confidence in Washington Redskins fans, with a press conference meant to show the ship was righted.

But then something happened, and I’m going to go ahead and say it’s not exactly going to help Skins die-hards feel all that great about the direction the franchise is going in.

Owner Dan Snyder stepped to the mic to begin the press conference and, on Jan. 2, said, “First off, happy Thanksgiving, everybody.”

Seriously. That happened.

Was that a joke about being thankful for hiring Rivera? Did he forget what day it was? What the what?!

The phrase trended on Twitter as other people asked the same question:

I’d also like to point out that Snyder talked about Rivera bringing a culture change, which is ironic given that the fired Bruce Allen said recently that the culture in Washington was “damn good”:

What a great start 2020 is so far for the Redskins organization.

Redskins finalize a 5-year deal with Ron Rivera as new head coach

The deal was all-but finalized, but the Redskins have officially named Rivera as their newest head coach in Washington.

All that was left to do for the Washington Redskins was cross the T’s and dot the I’s on Ron Rivera’s contract.

The team did so on Tuesday morning, finalizing a deal with Rivera as the next head coach of the Redskins, making him the ninth coach since 2000. It took a little bit longer than expected, as many people thought that a deal would be struck on Monday afternoon. Nonetheless, Washington has a new head coach in town, looking to get back on his feet. Rivera was fired by the Carolina Panthers on December third after losing four-straight games and turning in a 5-7 record. He finished his tenure in Carolina with an overall regular-season record of 76-63-1.

It was reported on Sunday night that Rivera would travel to Washington on Monday to meet with the Redskins about the coaching vacancy, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday morning that the team was expected to name him as their head coach later that day. Now that move has been made official, a day later.

As the head coach in Washington, Rivera is expected to have a big say in who is hired as the team president and general manager of the Redskins, now that Bruce Allen has been fired by the team. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the group is hopeful that everyone can work together and get on the same page going forward.

It’s a new day in Washington, and the winds of change are ever-present. Enjoy the feeling of hope, Redskins fans. Brighter days are ahead.

NFC East News: Redskins to name Ron Rivera head coach

The Washington Redskins are set to name Ron Rivera as their next head coach

The NFL coaching carousel has begun and Doug Pederson is set to have some competition among his coaching peers in the division.

Michael Silver of NFL.com is reporting that the Redskins are set to announce former Carolina Panthers head coach, Ron Rivera to the same position.

Carolina fired Rivera on Dec. 3 and he was viewed as a strong candidate that wouldn’t have to wait long for a chance at another opening.

Washington parted ways with team president Bruce Allen on Monday after 10-years and six different head coaches.

In Washington, Rivera will inherit a young team with plenty of playmakers, including quarterback Dwayne Haskins and wide receiver, Terry McLaurin.

Washington also owns the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Redskins fire head trainer Larry Hess after 17 years in Washington

The Redskins have made another massive move, firing the head trainer for the team and likely reshaping the entire medical department.

According to NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay, the Washington Redskins have fired Larry Hess, the head trainer for the Redskins.

Hess had been working for the Redskins for 17 years, but once his colleague Bruce Allen — whom he was close to — was fired on Monday morning, it was rumored that the front office upheaval might reach the training room as well. Now, with the head trainer out, it would not come as a surprise to see the rest of the medical department looking for work soon as well.

The Redskins have had a muddled injury history over the past several years, and they finished this season with 24 players on the injured reserve list. They’ve also been gifted much of the blame regarding left tackle Trent Williams, who claims that they severely misdiagnosed a tumor on his scalp that ended up being cancerous. According to Williams’ side of the story, the medical staff had been monitoring the growth for six years while telling him that it was nothing to worry about. Williams had the cancerous growth removed earlier this year, and he has been holding out from the team ever since.

The move was rumored to happen earlier in the day, again by Finlay, but the first report detailed that the medical staff could be canned, while Hess remained safe. Finlay later added that Hess was also in danger of being shown the exit, and it appears that’s now what happened.

With Ron River, who is expected to be named the new head coach, on his way to Virginia to meet with the team, there will surely be more announcements about the Redskins’ structure in the near future. Stay tuned.

Redskins need to lock down Kevin O’Connell as their OC of the future

O’Connell has been linked to Josh McDaniels, who’s likely to become a head coach somewhere in the NFL, but the Redskins can’t let him go.

The Washington Redskins need to take advantage of their pertinent decision making and lock down the assets they have in house.

We’re talking about offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, who has reshaped the Redskins offense around young talent like QB Dwayne Haskins, RB Derrius Guice, and WRs Terry McLaurin and Steven Sims Jr.

With Ron Rivera expected to be named as the next Redskins head coach later today, Washington now needs to cement O’Connell’s spot with the team and keep him around as the offensive coordinator going forward. Otherwise, he could end up like numerous other offensive coaches who have left Washington to find greener grass elsewhere.

While the Black Monday coaching carousel continues to churn, Josh McDaniels, the OC for the New England Patriots, has had his name connected to many open head coaching jobs in the NFL. It’s been mentioned that, should McDaniels choose to take over the HC job with the Cleveland Browns or New York Giants, he could look to fill out his coaching staff with people he’s close with. That includes O’Connell, who looks at McDaniels as a mentor who taught him a lot of the schemes he is using in Washington.

Of course, the Redskins have O’Connell under contract and could block him from being able to leap teams and join another budding offense, and that’s exactly what they need to do. Washington has a really talented offensive mind, and they need to hold on to him. Give KOC control of the offense, pay him the money he deserves, and ensure a bright future for your young players. You’ve made several good decisions already today, Dan Snyder, why stop now?

Alex Smith shuts down rumors about assuming front office role with Redskins

Smith has been rumored to be a great fit in the Redskins front office, but he made it clear on Monday that he hopes to play again in 2020.

The end of the regular season marks a time for players to clean out their lockers and chat with the media for one last time before the offseason begins.

It was a busy day, to say the least, for the Washington Redskins, as they announced the firing of team president of Bruce Allen. With that as a pertinent topic of conversation — along with the expected hiring of Ron Rivera as head coach — Redskins quarterback Alex Smith met with reporters and talked about his future with the team, and what he hopes to accomplish going forward.

After spending the year rehabbing from a gruesome leg injury suffered last season, it was rumored that Smith could choose to take on a role in the front office for the Redskins, rather than return to the field in any fashion. Smith apparently shot down those rumors on Monday, saying that he absolutely hopes to return to football in the future. He also went on to give a very heartfelt and honest answer about his feelings on the 2019 season in Washington, saying he can’t help but feel that he’s partly to blame for the Redskins struggles.

With the emergence of rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, it is tough to see how Smith fits in with the Redskins football plans going forward, but at least he made it clear that he intends on playing again. Regardless, it appears that we haven’t seen the last of Smith’s playing career.

Twitter reacts to incremental changes for Washington Redskins

The Redskins lit the world on fire early on Monday morning by firing Bruce Allen and likely bringing in Ron Rivera as the new head coach.

The Washington Redskins’ nation was set ablaze early on Monday morning, as it was announced that team president Bruce Allen would be removed from his post with the team.

Along with that long-overdue news, it’s highly expected that former Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera will be named as the next head coach of the Redskins, and he is flying to Ashburn to meet with the team and likely sign a contract on Monday.

With so much change happening around the organization, players and fans have taken to social media and let their thoughts on the matter run free. Here is the best of what we saw on Twitter so far on Monday.
