Report: Former Saints assistant Dan Roushar to be named Tulane OL coach

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reports former Saints assistant Dan Roushar is expected to be hired as Tulane’s offensive line coach, via @MaddyHudak_94:

As the coaching staff for the New Orleans Saints continues to shape up, former assistant coach Dan Roushar has found a new local home in the college ranks. As first reported by the Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, the Tulane Green Wave is finalizing a deal to hire Roushar as their offensive line coach.

Roushar was one of the first significant departures on the staff following an underwhelming 7-10 season under Dennis Allen. The longtime Saints coach became the running backs coach in 2013 and was the offensive line coach for five seasons until being moved to tight ends in 2021 when Allen hired Doug Marrone.

Often at the facility on Airline Drive themselves, the Green Wave are looking to capitalize on their unprecedented success in the 2022 season where they accomplished the greatest single-season turnaround in college football history – culminating in a Cotton Bowl victory against the USC Trojans to finish 12-2.

As is the case in college football success, Tulane saw some turnover on their coaching staff, including offensive line coach Eman Naghavi who joined the Houston Cougars. One of the most critical position group hires of last season, Naghavi’s turnaround of the Green Wave’s offensive line was miraculous.

While Roushar was ultimately let go by New Orleans and not poached by Tulane, head coach Willie Fritz values longtime experience – and Roushar has that in spades. It’s worth noting that his work with tight ends may prove equally valuable with the promotion of former Tulane tight ends coach Slade Nagle to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

3 former Saints assistants ‘in the mix’ to join Sean Payton’s Broncos staff

Former Saints assistants Joe Lombardi, Dan Roushar, and Kris Richard are reportedly in the mix to join Sean Payton on the Broncos coaching staff:

It isn’t too surprising that Sean Payton is pulling from the years of connections he made with the New Orleans Saints to assemble his staff on the Denver Broncos. Payton is bringing Saints assistant offensive line coach Zach Strief with him to work with the Broncos blockers up front, and KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis reports that three other former Saints assistants are “in the mix” for jobs on Payton’s new coaching staff.

Two of them were just recently let go by second-year head coach Dennis Allen: co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Kris Richard as well as run-game coordinator and tight ends coach Dan Roushar. They aren’t alone, though. Let’s dive a little deeper into the names Klis reports are in consideration in Denver:

3 coaches ‘in the mix’ to join Broncos’ coaching staff

Joe Lombardi, Dan Roushar and Kris Richard are “in the mix” to join the Broncos’ coaching staff, according to 9News.

Denver Broncos new head coach Sean Payton has quickly started assembling his new coaching staff at Dove Valley.

After allowing Ejiro Evero out of his contract, the Denver Broncos have an opening at defensive coordinator. The team has already put in interview requests with Brian Flores and Sean Desai for the DC opening, and it’s probably worth noting that Desai told the Minnesota Vikings that he was removing himself from consideration for their DC position.

Meanwhile, three other coaches are “in the mix” to join Payton’s staff, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis: former Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, ex-New Orleans Saints run game coordinator/tight ends coach Dan Roushar and ex-Saints co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach Kris Richard. All three coaches have worked under Payton in the past.

Elsewhere on the coaching front, Brian Schottenheimer, who served as quarterback Russell Wilson‘s offensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks from 2018-2020, has been hired by the Dallas Cowboys as an OC. There had been some speculation that the Broncos might show interest in Schottenheimer, but he’ll land in Dallas instead.

Saints begin coaching staff changes, dismiss longtime assistant Dan Roushar

The Saints have begun making changes to their coaching staff, dismissing longtime tight ends coach and run-game coordinator Dan Roushar:

The New Orleans Saints have begun making changes to their coaching staff, with Nola.com’s Jeff Duncan first reporting that the team has dismissed longtime assistant coach Dan Roushar. Roushar joined the Saints back in 2013 as their running backs coach, and he’s held a variety of titles over the last decade as their offensive line coach, tight ends coach, and run-game coordinator.

But change is necessary after the team’s unspectacular 2022 season, in which they lost double-digit games for the first time since 2005. The Saints had their lowest ranking in points scored (22nd) since 2005, too, and more changes to the offense should be expected. They can’t continue trying to be a Sean Payton cover band. This is, hopefully, the first step towards introducing some fresh perspectives and new influences to their offensive philosophy.

New Orleans’ rushing attack was pedestrian by league standards this past season, ranking 19th in yards (1,982) and 22nd in touchdown runs (12) but 14th in attempts (465, or 27.4 per game). That’s simply not good enough with talented runners like Alvin Kamara and Taysom Hill in the building, and an offensive line full of top-50 draft picks. Roushar’s results with the tight ends room was mixed; Juwan Johnson has improved steadily year over year under his tutelage, but Adam Trautman has not developed into more than a replacement-level starter in the Saints offense.

Stay tuned for more staff movement. The Saints will need to hire Roushar’s replacement as tight ends coach, and maybe a new run-game coordinator. Offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael is the longest-tenured coach on the team, having joined Payton’s first staff back in 2006 and holding that title since 2009. We’ll find out soon whether Carmichael has been retained. We already know that head coach Dennis Allen will return for 2023 despite his career .283 record in the NFL.

Chargers add 3 new coaches to staff

The Chargers added three new coaches to their staff, including one to oversee the offensive line.

The Chargers added three coaches to their staff on Saturday.

The team hired Brendan Nugent as their new offensive line coach, Chris Gould as the assistant special teams coach, and Mike Hiestand as an offensive assistant.

The move to bring in Nugent came after L.A. lost previous offensive line coach Frank Smith to the Dolphins, who now serves as their offensive coordinator.

Nugent recently served as the Saints’ offensive line coach since 2015. In addition, he assisted as the run game coordinator/tight ends coach alongside Dan Roushar.

During Nugent’s tenure with New Orleans, 10 Pro Bowl selections came from the team’s offensive line.

Gould, brother of 49ers kicker Chris, was recently assistant special teams coach for the Broncos.

Heistand formerly was Denver’s assistant to head coach/offensive quality control.

Saints assistant coach Dan Roushar, WR Michael Thomas cleared from COVID-19 protocols

The New Orleans Saints reported more good news on Saturday, announcing that another assistant coach has been cleared to join the team for Sunday’s game with the New England Patriots after missing time in COVID-19 protocols: Dan Roushar, who works with the tight ends and is the Saints’ run game coordinator. He previously coached the offensive line before moving to Dan Campbell’s spot earlier this year.

Additionally, the Saints removed wide receiver Michael Thomas from the COVID-19 reserve list. He remains on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from late-offseason ankle surgery and will be unavailable until the bye week at least; if Thomas is able to immediately begin practicing once resting the required first six weeks, he’ll be eligible to play in Week 7’s away game against the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s good to see this mess beginning to clear up. The Saints were down 8 of 25 coaches a week ago after a series of breakthrough COVID-19 cases ripped through the fully-vaccinated coaching staff, but fortunately no one suffered any severe symptoms. Two more coaches remain out of action for Sunday in defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen and pass rush specialist Brian Young, both of whom should be cleared in the days ahead.

Report: Saints coaching staff shuffle continues, Dan Roushar moving to new role

The New Orleans Saints are expected to move offensive line coach Dan Roushar back to his role as tight ends coach and run game coordinator.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”RifxNAHQIV-1158563-7498″]

The Athletic’s Jeff Duncan reports that the New Orleans Saints are continuing to tweak their coaching staff, with Saints offensive line coach Dan Roushar expected to move back to his position as tight ends coach while picking up the new responsibility of running game coordinator. His predecessor, Dan Campbell, left New Orleans to become the Detroit Lions head coach earlier this offseason.

This comes after former Saints right tackle Zach Strief shared the news that he was leaving his position with WWL Radio to join the team as an assistant offensive line coach. Duncan adds that the Saints are likely to promote assistant Brendan Nugent to the full-time role, meaning Strief would be working more closely with Nugent than Roushar.

That’s a lot of movement. So let’s break it down a little more clearly, point by point:

  • Tight ends coach Dan Campbell leaves for Detroit
  • Offensive line coach Dan Roushar moves to tight ends coach
  • Assistant O.L. coach Brendan Nugent moves to O.L. coach
  • Zach Strief hired as assistant O.L. coach

Roushar initially coached running backs for the Saints when he was hired back in 2013, having begun working with the New Orleans tight ends in 2015. He started coaching the offensive line in 2016 and helped build one of the NFL’s best fronts, helping scout and develop draft picks like Ryan Ramczyk and Erik McCoy along the way.

As running game coordinator, he’ll likely continue to play a part in the offensive line’s construction, though his focus may land on the development of promising second-year tight end Adam Trautman. He handled many different tasks at Michigan State before making the jump to the NFL, so none of this is new to him.

However, it’s worth noting that we’re in a very fluid situation as the Saints finish replenishing their coaching staff after the hits it took this offseason. Job titles will be tweaked as Sean Payton looks to get everyone into the best position to succeed, so stay tuned for official word from the team.

Report: Saints blocked Panthers’ interview request with assistant OL coach

The New Orleans Saints reportedly blocked a request from the Carolina Panthers to interview assistant offensive line coach Brendan Nugent.

[jwplayer nbwPQUiW-ThvAeFxT]

The Carolina Panthers reportedly hired former New Orleans Saints assistant Joe Brady, lately of the LSU Tigers, to be their new offensive coordinator beneath first-year head coach Matt Rhule, formerly of Baylor. And one report suggests Brady tried to bring one of his ex-Saints colleagues along with him to Carolina.

Per The Athletic’s Jeff Duncan, the Panthers submitted an interview request with Saints assistant offensive line coach Brendan Nugent. Nugent and Brady worked together at William & Mary earlier in their careers, and linked up again with the Saints. They evidently maintained a close friendship over the years, and Brady may have hoped to work with Nugent again in Carolina.

But because the Saints and Panthers are division rivals in the always-heated NFC South, this request for an interview was declined. It’s possible that other Saints coaches whose contracts are up join Brady in the future, but for now, this door is closed to him.

We’ll circle back to Nugent before we leave off. He’s been a longtime assistant of Saints offensive line coach Dan Roushar, and would make for a logical in-house promotion should Roushar ever leave for another opportunity. It’s not surprising in the least that the Saints weren’t eager to part ways with him regardless of their divisional rivalry with the Panthers.
