Dan Lambert understands why Amanda Nunes left ATT: ‘I support that, and I hope she does well’

American Top Team founder Dan Lambert explains why he supports former UFC double champion Amanda Nunes leaving to start her own gym.

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – [autotag]Dan Lambert[/autotag]’s American Top Team has recently seen the departure of a UFC champion, but the gym owner fully understands and supports the move.

After [autotag]Amanda Nunes[/autotag] dropped one of her two UFC titles by losing to Julianna Peña via second-round submission at UFC 269, the former champ-champ decided it was time to move on from the gym she called home for over seven years.

On the surface, the move may have seemed like a knee-jerk reaction, but Nunes explained she always did things separately while at ATT. From Lambert’s perspective, he has no issue with one of the most successful fighters to call ATT home moving on to start her own thing.

“As long as it’s a good fit for us and a good fit for the fighter, we do great things together if we can,” Lambert told MMA Junkie. “If it’s no longer a great fit for us or them and somebody’s got to move on, we have an open-door policy. If somebody doesn’t want to be at the gym, they’re not going to be at the gym. Amanda decided she wants to start her own place and be a coach, maybe set something up for her post-fighting career. I support that, and I hope she does well.”

Nunes made it clear she has no intentions to compete with ATT and still has a good relationship with the gym. The UFC featherweight champ reached the pinnacle of two divisions after joining the gym following her loss to Cat Zingano at UFC 178 in 2014.

During her run with ATT, Lambert believes Nunes established herself as the greatest female fighter of all time and anything she does going forward can only add to her legacy. However, he also believes she must also begin planning for life after her fighting career is done, and the decision to start her own gym is a part of that.

“When someone fights their last fight and leaves their gloves in the cage, just because you don’t think about them anymore as a fan doesn’t mean they don’t have the rest of their life to think about,” Lambert said. “You know, what are you supposed to do? Just go sit home all day? You gotta do something and keep yourself busy. Idle hands are the hands of the devil, so if she has some idea on what she wants to do, to set herself up for when she’s done fighting, more power to her. Wish her all the best.”

ATT owner Dan Lambert cuts killer pro wrestling promo for AEW, gets slammed afterward

American Top Team’s Dan Lambert didn’t miss a beat as his love for pro wrestling shined in this incredible promo from Wednesday’s AEW show.

American Top Team owner Dan Lambert is no stranger to professional wrestling.

A lifelong fan of sports entertainment, Lambert has been involved with the business for years, getting into on-screen feuds thanks to the crossovers between professional wrestling and mixed martial arts. He’s also quite the collector as he has an incredible display of pro wrestling championship belts.

On Wednesday, Lambert took the mic at All Elite Wrestling’s show to cut a fantastic heel promo, but he also brought along a few familiar faces.

ATT mainstays, UFC champ-champ [autotag]Amanda Nunes[/autotag] and the BMF title winner [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag], were shown sitting ringside along with Lambert early in the broadcast, initially thought to just be fans for the evening.

However, later in the show, Lambert and crew were brought on screen for an interview, and that’s when his love for the business truly showed as he took the mic from commentator Tony Schiavone and began cutting a promo that got fans all riled up.

Watch this (via Twitter):

“When AEW decided to come to Miami, the home of American Top Team, Tony Khan called and asked if the BMF champion, Jorge Masvidal, and the two-division UFC champion and greatest female fighter of all time, Amanda Nunes, would make an appearance, but nobody said anything about doing an interview or endorsing this show,” Lambert started.

After putting Masvidal and Nunes “over” ringside, Lambert entered the ring and continued a verbal assault on AEW while also promoting Dustin Poirier ahead of Saturday’s UFC 264 trilogy bout with Conor McGregor.

“In fact, as an old-school professional wrestling fan, I was skeptical of even coming to this place in the first place,” Lambert continued. “… and not because I’m a busy guy running the largest and most successful mixed martial arts gym in history of this planet, or because I got better things to do this week like head out to Las Vegas and see my guy Dustin Poirier knock out Conor McGregor again!”

Lambert continued to criticize AEW’s place in pro wrestling, which caused fans to boo, and ultimately, prompted wrestler Lance Archer to come to the ring and dish out some punishment at the conclusion of the promo.

For his efforts on the mic, Lambert paid for them with a forearm to the face, and also Archer’s finishing move, the blackout, an overhead slam that Lambert sold like a true pro.

One thing’s for certain: Lambert’s love for the pro wrestling business shined as the ATT owner checked all the boxes in this segment.
