3 things to know about new Dolphins OL Dan Feeney

Get to know the newest offensive lineman.

The Miami Dolphins went into the offseason with some questions along the offensive line, as left guard and right tackle aren’t totally solidified for the upcoming season.

To address a need, Miami signed free agent offensive lineman Dan Feeney, who spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets following the completion of his rookie deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.

It’s unclear exactly what role Feeney will play in 2023, as he could compete for a starting job or simply provide invaluable depth.

Either way, before he gets on the field, it’s important for Dolphins fans to get to know one of their newest additions.

Breaking down the terms of new Dolphins OL Dan Feeney’s contract

The numbers make it unlikely that he doesn’t make the team this year.

Heading into this offseason, one of the biggest holes that the Miami Dolphins had on their roster was the offensive line. With questions at left guard and right tackle, as well as depth, they had to do something.

General manager Chris Grier opted to look around the AFC East, and that’s where he found Dan Feeney, who spent his last two seasons with the New York Jets.

According to Over the Cap, Feeney and the Dolphins agreed to a one-year deal that will pay him $3.25 million. He’ll make $1.08 million in a base salary (fully guaranteed), $2.05 million in a signing bonus and another $125,000 in a roster bonus.

With these being guaranteed to the player at signing, with the exception of the roster bonus, cutting Feeney before the season wouldn’t make sense. Miami would only save that $125,000 while incurring $3.13 million in dead cap.

The 29-year-old, with his experience in the interior, could put some pressure on Liam Eichenberg for the left guard spot, as the latter hasn’t done much to stave off competition this offseason. If Eichenberg does win the job, Feeney will serve as a solid depth piece who can fill in at guard or center if needed.

A quick look at Miami’s newest guard.

The Miami Dolphins went into the offseason needing more help along the offensive line despite signing left tackle Terron Armstead and center Connor Williams last year.

So far, the only outside free agent they’ve brought in since the start of the new league year has been former Los Angeles Chargers and New York Jets guard Dan Feeney.

Feeney has started and been a backup in his career, so there’s a chance that he may push Liam Eichenberg for the starting left guard spot, but he could provide some depth at the very least.

Before he steps on the field, let’s take a look at some of the best pictures of the former Hoosier from his time with his previous teams.

New Dolphins QB Mike White posts hilarious video with teammates

Three Jets hit the road for Miami Gardens.

When the Miami Dolphins signed wide receiver Braxton Berrios on Thursday, he became the third member of the 2022 New York Jets to join the aqua and orange in recent days.

Berrios joined quarterback Mike White and offensive lineman Dan Feeney in the trip from New Jersey to Florida, as they’ve all signed for at least one year with the Dolphins.

After the news, White took to social media to share an edited clip from “The Hangover,” depicting the three former Jets as the main characters in the movie.

Making the transition to a new organization is always difficult, but these guys already have each other to lean on.

A mini Jets reunion happening in Miami with Mike White, Dan Feeney and Braxton Berrios all joining Dolphins

Three former Jets now in Miami

The running thought is that if Aaron Rodgers does come to the Jets, he will try to recruit some of his buddies to join him with Gang Green. Maybe there was recruiting going on with a former Jets quarterback.

Okay, not really, but it is still interesting to see three former Jets have now all joined the Miami Dolphins in free agency. First, it was quarterback Mike White. Now, two more players joined the list Thursday as guard Dan Feeney and wide receiver Braxton Berrios will also join head coach Mike McDaniel.

Berrios will be on his third AFC East team. He’s been with the Jets and the Patriots. Maybe one day he’ll join the Bills to complete the tour. Berrios spent four seasons with the Jets.

Feeney spent two seasons with the Jets after four years with the Chargers.

Dolphins to sign former Jets OL Dan Feeney

He was originally drafted by the Chargers.

While some teams are taking a slow approach to the of the new league year, the Miami Dolphins are making moves left and right.

According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the Dolphins are adding to their offensive line acquisitions, as they’re signing guard Dan Feeney.

Feeney, 28, was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the third round of the 2017 draft after a collegiate career at Indiana. Following four years with the Chargers, where he was a starting left guard, he joined the New York Jets for the last two seasons. With the Jets, however, he played a backup role.

To this point, the Dolphins appeared to be leaning toward starting Liam Eichenberg again at left guard in 2023. The team should be looking for an upgrade at that spot, and Feeney could be that.

At the very least, he can provide depth.

Dan Feeney contract details: Jets OL gets $3 million guaranteed

Reserve OL Dan Feeney’s new deal with the Jets is similar to the one he received last offseason.

The Jets turned to a familiar face to bolster their offensive line depth during the first week of free agency, re-signing Dan Feeney to a one-year deal.

Feeney’s new contract with New York is identical to the one he received last offseason. The reserve offensive lineman will make $3 million in fully guaranteed money, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Feeney’s salary cap charge is $3 million.

Feeney appeared in 16 games and made five starts with the Jets last season. The 27-year-old played 185 offensive snaps and finished with a strong Pro Football Focus grade of 75.9.

Feeney brings versatility to New York’s offensive line, as he can line up at center and both guard positions. He also has 62 career starts under his belt, making him a plug-and-play option Robert Saleh can rely on in the event of an injury to one of Gang Green’s starters in the trenches.

2022 NFL free agency: Jets re-signing OL Dan Feeney

The Jets are keeping a piece of their offensive line depth in guard/center Dan Feeney.

Dan Feeney will return to the Jets on a one-year deal, according to the New York Post’s Brian Costello.

Feeney, who will be 28 by the start of the 2022 season, gives the Jets another depth piece on the offensive line with experience in their system.

Feeney is versatile and can play guard and center – two positions he played over his five spot-starts for the Jets in 2021. He started Weeks 13, 14  and 16 at guard before stepping in at center for Connor McGovern in Weeks 17 and 18.

Buccaneers vs. Jets: Reunions and injuries among 6 Week 17 storylines

The Jets are dealing with injuries and the Buccaneers might be without their head coach due to COVID-19. Storylines for Week 17:

It won’t be easy against the defending Super Bowl champions, but the Jets have a chance to build their first winning streak of the season when the Buccaneers come to MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Tampa Bay’s last trip to East Rutherford, in 2013, ended in controversy, as an unnecessary roughness penalty for a late hit out of bounds on Geno Smith allowed Nick Folk to boot a 48-yard field goal to give the Jets a thrilling win. A lot has changed since then, as the Buccaneers now have the greatest quarterback in NFL history under center.

Here are six storylines to know before the Jets and the Buccaneers battle.
