Broncos had an amazing injury rate turnaround under Beau Lowery

“We went from 32nd in the league in games missed by players on your roster to first in the league by fewest,” Sean Payton said.

When Sean Payton joined the Denver Broncos in 2023, he cleared out most of the team’s staff, including the old strength and performance staff.

One under-the-radar addition that Payton brought in was Beau Lowery, who was hired as the team’s vice president of player health and performance. Last spring, Denver general manager George Paton said he believed the addition of Lowery could prove to be a “game changer” for the Broncos.

Paton was right.

After a terrible year of injuries in 2022, Denver had a much better injury rate under the new staff in 2023. Was it a coincidence? Payton doesn’t think so.

“I think the one thing, and this is a credit to Beau and the people all involved in the weight room, athletic training room and people that are treating our players — we had a big goal of how do we reduce the injuries?” Payton said this spring. “Shoot, the first training camp I had with you guys, we had someone get hurt and it was like, ‘Man, here it goes again.’ I don’t know if it’s ever happened before, but we went from 32nd in the league in games missed by players on your roster to first in the league by fewest. So we went from 100 and some to 30 and some in one year.”

Payton believes that the additions of Lowery and strength and conditioning coach Dan Dalrymple directly correlated to that reduced number of injuries.

“I think he’s a real good communicator and he’s passionate about what he does,” Payton said of Dalrymple. “We’re so much further along relative to recovery and strength and conditioning now. We’re able to get all the — each practice, we’re able to see workloads for players.

“He’s very adaptable. I would say a strong quality is he’s a real good staff member. He can relate to the players and he’ll push them. There are a lot of leadership qualities that I saw when we were together at Miami of Ohio 20 years ago.”

The Broncos currently have two players on the season-ending IR list. Fans in Denver will hope that the team’s lower injury rate in 2023 was a sign of a new normal and not a one-off healthy season.

Broncos’ new strength coach has 16 years of experience in the NFL

Dan Dalrymple, the Broncos’ new strength and conditioning coach, has 35 years of experience, including 16 years in the NFL.

In addition to having a revamped coaching staff this year with new coordinators on offense, defense and special teams, the Denver Broncos will also have a new head strength and conditioning coach.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton has hired Dan Dalrymple to oversee the team’s strength and conditioning in 2023 and beyond. Payton is very familiar with Dalrymple from his time in New Orleans — the strength coach was hired with Payton in 2006 and remained with the Saints through the 2021 season.

Dalrymple and Payton are now set to reunite in Denver after the Broncos parted ways with former strength coach Loren Landow last month. Landow held the position in Denver from 2018-2022.

Dalrymple has 35 years of strength and conditioning coach experience, including 16 years in the NFL with the Saints. Before that, he served as the director of athletic conditioning at Miami University (Ohio) from 1987-2005.

The Broncos are also bringing back Korey Jones as an assistant strength and conditioning coach under Dalrymple. Jones spent the last three years in Denver working with Landow.

Broncos coaching staff update: Strength coach hired, QBs coaches interview

The Broncos interviewed Greg Olson (not to be confused with Greg Olsen) as a QBs coach, hired a strength coach, and lost their WRs coach.

Slowly but surely, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has been building his new coaching staff at Dove Valley.

The latest addition to the staff is Dan Dalrymple as the team’s new strength and conditioning coach, according to a report from NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Dalrymple previously held the same role with the New Orleans Saints under Payton.

Elsewhere on the coaching front, the Broncos recently interviewed Greg Olson (not to be confused with Greg Olsen) and Kerry Joseph for the quarterbacks coach position, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. Olson has since been hired by the Seattle Seahawks as a QBs coach.

Denver will also need to find a new wide receivers coach after Zach Azzanni left the team to join the New York Jets in a lateral move, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Azzanni, who coached the Broncos’ WRs over the last five seasons, will reunite with Nathaniel Hackett, who is now the offensive coordinator in New York.

Denver’s own offensive coordinator position remains unfilled, but it’s not a crucial hire for the Broncos given that Payton will run the offense. The team’s defensive coordinator job will be a crucial hire, though, and Denver has several candidates.

Vance Joseph, who has already interviewed with the Broncos, is scheduled to interview with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday and Thursday, according to KMGH-TV’s Troy Renck.

In addition to Joseph, Rex Ryan is also a DC option for Denver, as are Kris Richard, Mike Zimmer and in-house candidate Christian Parker.

Sean Payton brings former Saints strength coach Dan Dalrymple to Denver

Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos have hired longtime New Orleans Saints strength coach Dan Dalrymple, who Dennis Allen dismissed in 2022:

It took a few days of negotiations, but another former New Orleans Saints coach is joining Sean Payton’s coaching staff with the Denver Broncos, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Underhill reports that Dan Dalrymple is joining the Broncos. Dalrymple was one of Payton’s first hires with the Saints back in 2006, and he spent 16 years with New Orleans as its strength and conditioning coach before being dismissed in 2022.

Dalrymple has won multiple NSCA Professional Coach of the Year awards during his time with the Saints, most recently in 2021. But head coach Dennis Allen wanted to go in a different direction, hiring Matt Rhea and Matt Clapp away from the Alabama Crimson Tide to run the weight room in New Orleans.

He’s the latest former Saints assistant joining Payton in Denver: the list now includes formerly-retired special teams coach Mike Westhoff, offensive assistant coach Declan Doyle, and offensive line assistant Zach Strief. Last year’s co-defensive coordinator Kris Richard also interviewed for the DC role on Payton’s staff, though he’s more of a longshot behind ESPN analyst and two-time NFL head coach Rex Ryan.

It’s worth noting that Strief and Doyle are the only members of this group the Saints hadn’t already chosen to move on from, or who had been comfortable on the golf course until Payton gave them a call. Some losses were to be expected but it’s not like Payton ripped the copper wire from the walls while cleaning out his desk.

Broncos coaching staff update: Strength coach and TE coach on deck

The Broncos have a new tight ends coach and they are closing in on a strength and conditioning coach.

Sean Payton’s coaching staff is coming together.

After previously hiring Zach Strief as the Denver Broncos’ new offensive line coach, Payton is now expected to add two more former members of the New Orleans Saints’ coaching staff.

Dan Dalrymple, who served as the Saints’ head strength and conditioning coach from 2006-2022, is “firmly in the mix” to accept the same role in Denver, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are set to hire ex-New Orleans offensive assistant Declan Doyle, according to neworleans.football’s Nick Underhill. Doyle is expected to become Denver’s new tight ends coach.

Elsewhere on the coaching front, offensive coordinator Justin Outten has left the Broncos to become the new running backs coach for the Tennessee Titans. Denver’s list of candidates to replace Outten includes Ronald Curry, another former Saint.

On the other side of the ball, Payton has interviewed six candidates for the team’s defensive coordinator position. We are tracking all of the Broncos’ coaching staff changes on this page.

Broncos coaching staff changes: 6 moves on deck

Here’s the latest on the Broncos’ coaching staff changes.

The coaching staff changes continue for the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos have “parted ways” with inside linebackers coach Peter Hansen, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Denver also won’t bring back outside linebackers coach Bert Watts, according to The Denver Post‘s Parker Gabriel.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are eyeing New Orleans Saints offensive assistant Declan Doyle as a tight ends coach, according to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports. That presumably means that holdover TEs coach Jake Moreland is out.

Denver is also targeting Saints assistant to the head coach/offensive assistant Kevin Petry, according to Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune. It’s unclear what role Petry would hold with the Broncos.

After bringing in ex-Saints Zach Strief as their new offensive line coach, Klis reports that the team is not expected to retain assistant OL coach Ben Steele.

Klis has also named-dropped Dan Dalrymple as a potential candidate to replace former strength and conditioning coach Loren Landow.
