NFL outlines possible playoff scenarios after cancelling Bills-Bengals game

The NFL has officially announced the cancellation of Monday’s Bills-Bengals game, and will decide playoff scenarios in a Friday meeting.

Earlier today, the Associated Press first reported that the Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game on Monday night that was postponed after Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on the field would not resume, and would be cancelled.

The NFL confirmed this report on Thursday night, making the game’s cancellation official.

“This has been a very difficult week,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “We continue to focus on the recovery of Damar Hamlin and are encouraged by the improvements in his condition as well as the tremendous outpouring of support and care for Damar and his family from across the country.  We are also incredibly appreciative of the amazing work of the medical personnel and commend each and every one of them.”

The NFL outlined three key points in the decision to cancel the game in that statement.

  • Not playing the Buffalo-Cincinnati game to its conclusion will have no effect on which clubs qualify for the postseason. No club would qualify for the postseason and no club will be eliminated based on the outcome of this game.
  • It would require postponing the start of the playoffs for one week, thereby affecting all 14 clubs that qualify for postseason play.
  • Making the decision prior to Week 18 is consistent with our competitive principles and enables all clubs to know the playoff possibilities prior to playing the final weekend of regular season games.

“Cancelling the game between the Bills and Bengals creates potential competitive inequities in certain playoff scenarios,” the league said. “In an effort to mitigate those inequities, NFL clubs will consider tomorrow in a Special League Meeting a resolution recommended by the Commissioner and approved today by the Competition Committee.”

Three scenarios will be presented:

Scenario 1

Buffalo and Kansas City both win or both tie – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Scenario 2

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Baltimore wins or ties – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Scenario 3

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Cincinnati wins – a Buffalo or Cincinnati vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

The NFL also noted that “If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati in Week 18 it will have defeated Cincinnati, a divisional opponent, twice but will not be able to host a playoff game because Cincinnati will have a higher winning percentage for a 16-game schedule than Baltimore will for a 17-game schedule.

“If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati and if those two clubs are scheduled to play a Wild Card game against one another, the site for that game would be determined by a coin toss. If Cincinnati wins the Week 18 game or if Baltimore and Cincinnati are not scheduled to play one another in the Wild Card round, the game sites would be determined by the regular scheduling procedures.”

“As we considered the football schedule, our principles have been to limit disruption across the league and minimize competitive inequities,” Goodell concluded. “I recognize that there is no perfect solution. The proposal we are asking the ownership to consider, however, addresses the most significant potential equitable issues created by the difficult, but necessary, decision not to play the game under these extraordinary circumstances.”

The All-22: How Damar Hamlin has made a difference in the Bills’ defense

As we wait for further news on the condition of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, here’s how he’s made a difference in his defense in 2022.

While we all wait for further news on the condition of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who suffered cardiac arrest in the first quarter of Monday night’s game between the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, all we can do is to hope for the best. The team gave an update on Hamlin’s condition late Monday night.

This is an unprecedented on-field incident in NFL history, so everybody involved is trying to figure out the best way to deal with it. It was of course the right decision to cancel the game after Hamlin was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. And there’s no real thought of when — or if — to re-schedule this game at this point. The focus is on Hamlin and his recovery.

“Medical advice guided our decision,” NFL Chief Football Administrative Officer Dawn Aponte told reporters on a conference call that took place after midnight EST. “We remained in constant communication with both teams, medical personnel, game officials and ownership. We made decisions that we believed to be in the best interest of Damar’s status and the state of both teams – players and staffs. There couldn’t have been more collaboration throughout this process by all parties.”

Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest, heartbeat restored, on field

In the end, it was a series of conference between Bills head coach Sean McDermott and Bengals head coach Zac Taylor that ruled the day.

Fans and well-wishers have donated over $3 million to Hamlin’s toy drive, and if you would like to add to those donations, you can do so here.

Everybody is hoping and praying for the best. I wanted to take a few minutes to detail how Hamlin has made a difference on the field for the Bills’ defense in the 2022 season. Hamlin was a sixth-round pick out of Pitt in 2021. He played just 65 snaps in his rookie season, but he accepted a lot more responsibility in 2022, especially after safety Micah Hyde was lost for the rest of the 2022 season to a neck injury in late September. Buffalo’s defense, led by Leslie Frazier, requires a lot of discipline and consistency from its safeties, so it didn’t help that Jordan Poyer has also missed time this season due to injury.

That might have overwhelmed a lot of young players, but Hamlin was not going to be overwhelmed. His rough upbringing defined his determinism, but it never defeated him. Hamlin worked hard to get where he got, and when the moment put the spotlight on him, he delivered all season long.

So, as we wait for more news, here is how Hamlin has helped to define one of the NFL’s best defenses.
