Jurior safety Bryce Anderson featured in our Texas A&M Countdown to Kickoff

Texas A&M junior safety is primed for a big season in Mike Elko’s defensive scheme

The countdown to Texas A&M’s 2024 season opener against Notre Dame is nearing single digits.

Ten days remain before the 7th-ranked Fighting Irish head to College Station for a primetime showdown. New Aggies head coach Mike Elko has completed the long journey to accepting the position, going through his first offseason, and finishing his first fall practice period with the team this month.

Aggies Wire will focus on one player daily for the next ten days, ranking the Top 10 players on the 2024 roster. Junior defensive back Bryce Anderson is back at free safety under Elko and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman’s scheme, coming in at No. 9 on our list.

After two successful seasons, Jimbo Fisher’s firing is likely the best thing to happen to Anderson. The junior has clear NFL potential as a safety, and his playing in front of a potentially elite defensive line will allow scouts to assess his skillset.

In his most productive season yet, Anderson finished the 2023 campaign with  55 tackles, 34 solo tackles, 1.5 sacks, and an interception. He has an elite closing speed and impressive coverage instincts, as his 6-0 192-pound frame provides enough cushion to take on running backs and tight ends in the open field.

Anderson’s on-field leadership will be counted on, as former starting safety Demani Richardson’s departure to the NFL essentially passes the torch to the Beaumont, Texas native. The Beaumont, Texas native will join former Central Michigan safety Trey Jones and sophomore Dalton Brooks in the safety rotation.

While Anderson will be relied on in coverage due to his sideline-to-sideline agility, I’d expect Elko and Bateman to occasionally deploy him as a pass rusher to take advantage of his top-end speed.

Here are the Top 5 Texas A&M defensive players that need to make an impact this spring

Ahead of spring football, here are five Texas A&M defensive players who need to improve, starting next month.

It may be early in the offseason, but Texas A&M’s spring football season is less than a month away, and all eyes will be on how new head coach Mike Elko and his impressive coaching staff will help what should be an elite defensive unit, led incoming senior defensive lineman Shemar Turner, former Purdue Edge Nic Scourton, who led the Big 10 in sacks (10) last season.

Not to ignore the 22 transfers that are due to make an immediate impact, but looking at the current roster members that need to take the next step in their collective development will help dictate what Aggie fans should look forward to during spring football, which is now less than a month away.

While Turner’s return basically solidifies A&M’s defensive line, younger members in trenches, including DJ Hicks and Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, showed flashes during their extended snaps in the Aggies bowl loss to Oklahoma State and are both deemed to play much larger roles in 2024.

Including several players in the secondary and a linebacker competing for a starting job, here are the five Aggies on defense that need to step up during spring football, heading into the 2024 season.

Texas Football: Wish list of prospects for the 2023 recruiting class

Six players that Texas needs to get into the fold in the 2023 cycle.

Although the 2022 class is not quite over with, it is never too early to look ahead.

Texas currently has a top five class in the country for the 2022 cycle which is remarkable given the disappointing season the Horns had. But if Steve Sarkisian is going to get the program “back” to national championship-contending level, he must stack multiple elite classes on top of each other.

The Longhorns have already gained interest from some of the biggest names in the class of 2023 such as Arch Manning, Rueben Owens and Javien Toviano.

If Texas wants to sign another top level class at this time next year the product has to improve on the field. A 5-7 record is much more forgivable in season one compared to season two. Recruits will want to see Steve Sarkisian’s vision is working and the best way to do that is winning more games.

It will not take a Big 12 championship and a college football playoff birth to prove the program is going in the right direction. If Texas wins just eight or nine games in 2022 recruiting momentum will create itself.

If Sarkisian could put together a Christmas wish list for 2023 prospects, here are some of the players that would definitely make the cut:
