Good, bad and ugly: Red-zone play ruins Cowboys’ perfect performance vs Pats

The defense and special teams led the way for the Dallas Cowboys as they dominated the New England Patriots 38-3 in the Week 4 win. | From @BenGrimaldi

The Dallas Cowboys did not take to losing their first game of the season well, bouncing back by blowing out the New England Patriots, 38-3, in Week 4. In dominating, the Cowboys handed Bill Belichick the worst loss of his coaching career in a game where the future Hall of Famer had a chance for his 300th career victory.

It was a win that followed a familiar script for the Cowboys. Get a lead, aided by the defense, and then suffocate the opponent by forcing them into mistakes. Dallas’ defense did their part per usual, and the offense once again had an efficient outing moving the ball and putting points on the scoreboard.

Just a week after a poor performance, the Cowboys answered their critics by doing something rarely done, routing the Patriots. Here’s the good, the bad and the ugly for the Cowboys in a Week 4 win.

Cowboys’ Micah Parsons named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

From @ToddBrock24f7: This is the 3rd time Parsons has won the award, just 35 games into his NFL career. He’s one away from a tie for the most in Cowboys history.

Micah Parsons was a force of nature in last Sunday’s 30-10 throttling of the Jets, so it’s only fitting that the accolades continue to rain down on him.

Parsons was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week thanks to a stat line that almost defies belief: nine QB pressures, seven QB hits, four tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, a pass breakup, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

He even got up and returned the fumble recovery to the end zone for an apparent touchdown, but it was ruled that a Jets defender had grazed Parsons while he was still on the ground.

All in all, though, a thoroughly impressive performance that will get the talk started once again of Parsons for Defensive Player of the Year or even league MVP.

This is the third time Parsons has won the weekly award in 35 regular-season games played.

He won his first as a rookie in the Cowboys’ 20-16 Halloween win over Minnesota, a night when Parsons recorded 11 tackles and four TFLs.

The second came last season in a Week 5 win over the Rams. That day, Parsons notched five tackles, a tackle for loss, two sacks, and a strip of L.A. quarterback Matthew Stafford in a 22-10 win.

Parsons is now tied with linebacker Sean Lee for the second-most NFC Defensive Player of the Week awards in team history. With his next, he’ll tie DeMarcus Ware atop the list.

And as if anyone needed further proof that Parsons is playing about as well as a defensive player can in this league, his Madden rating was bumped up Wednesday to a 98.

3 Major takeaways from Cowboys’ strong 2-0 start to 2023

If Week 1 sounded the alarm, Week 2 started up the cement mixer. Dallas might just have a juggernaut in each phase of the game in 2023. | From @cdpiglet

Coming into the season, there were a myriad of storylines centering around the Dallas Cowboys. There was the alleged regression of quarterback Dak Prescott. Many claimed he had been surpassed by Daniel Jones and foresaw him struggling against the New York Jets defense. There were questions stemming from head coach Mike McCarthy taking over playcalling duties and about the defense’s need to improve against the run and of course the lack of a good kicking option. Across all three phases, Dallas was going to have issues on the football field.

Yet here are those same Cowboys, starting the season 2-0, crushing the two New York teams by a total score of 70-10. They look like the most complete and dominant team in the NFL, attacking opponents in all three phases of the game. Offensively, they’ve used a conservative approach that includes heavy doses of CeeDee Lamb and the running backs. Defensively, they’ve been suffocating following the lead of Micah Parsons, and they’ve also sported a playmaking special teams unit with an incredible rookie kicker.

‘Smothering people’: Cowboys defense aiming for history by staying in the moment

From @ToddBrock24f7: After dominating Week 2, the Dallas D thinks they can be even better- maybe even historically great. But they’re taking it 1 game at a time.

It’s been a stellar start for the 2023 Cowboys defense. In two games, they’ve allowed a total of just 10 points while recording 10 sacks and seven takeaways.

As good as they were in their season-opening shutout of the Giants on the road, the unit was arguably even better at home in Week 2 against the other New York squad.

But to a man, the Cowboys defenders believe there’s still room to improve.

“It’s all about getting better every week,” cornerback Trevon Diggs said after beating the Jets 30-10, “going back to the film and seeing what we can do better, seeing what we need to work on.”

“We gave up 10 points,” lamented linebacker Micah Parsons following the game. “So there were some things that we could have gotten back and we could have gotten better on.”

CeeDee Lamb’s standout performance vs Jets sets expectations

CeeDee Lamb provided a necessary spark for the Cowboys offense against one of the league’s best defenses, earning him player of the game. | From @TimLettiero

On March 6th, 1997, The Notorious B.I.G. was crowned king of the New York rap game. On September 17th, 2023, the Dallas Cowboys steamrolled the New York Jets to crown themselves the kings of New York. After dismantling the New York Giants in emphatic fashion, Dallas looked to do more of the same back at home against the Jets and they delivered.

Without Aaron Rodgers, the Jets attempted to lean on the run game, but Dallas shut that down almost instantly, leaving the ball in Zach Wilson’s hands. That went about as well as it could have for the Dallas defense but the Dallas offense was the leading factor in today’s game. HC Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott did their jobs today keeping the ball moving and staying efficient, but a certain pass catcher took the game by the scruff of the neck.

With Brandin Cooks sidelined with a knee injury, CeeDee Lamb stepped up and had himself a day. Lining up both inside and outside, he was able to torch a Jets secondary that had picked off Bills QB Josh Allen three times in Week 1.

Mere minutes into the game he and quarterback Dak Prescott connected on a beautiful pitch and catch down the left sideline.

With just under a minute left in the first quarter and the offense pushed up against their own goalline, McCarthy and Prescott called ole reliable and sent Lamb on a slant. A perfect ball between defenders and a missed tackle led to a lot of open field for Lamb as he took the rock 30 yards downfield.

He’ll definitely be thanking Center Tyler Biasdasz after tonight for backing him up on his fumble.

He’d continue to haul in catch after catch and consistently move the chains for the Dallas offense. He’d top off a fantastic first half with this catch, putting him over 100 yards on seven receptions.

Lamb would finish the day with 11 catches on 13 targets for 143 yards, 66 of them being after the catch. It’s safe to say WR1 and QB1 are on the same page and firing on all cylinders.

By the numbers: Cowboys dominant across the board in Week 2

The numbers reflect a dominant victory by the Cowboys in Week 2 that involved all three phases of the game and total control throughout. | From @ReidDHanason

With a 30-10 victory over the Jets in Dallas’ home opener, the Cowboys moved to 2-0 and now sit atop nearly all NFL power rankings. It was another dominant showing for their offense, defense and special teams, and it was statement performance against one of the NFL’s more talented rosters.

Even without Aaron Rodgers under center, the Jets were considered a worthy opponent. They bested an AFC favorite Buffalo team in Week 1, and hoped their suffocating defense and strong running game could keep the good times rolling in Arlington.

That clearly didn’t happen and as the numbers show, Dallas was superior in nearly every way.

The Cowboys grabbed an early lead on their opening drive and never relinquished. They methodically piled up points and for the second week in a row, produced a dominant win in all three phases of the game. Here’s a look inside the numbers.

Cowboys’ Zack Martin: ‘Just being smart’ by coming out of game after 4th-quarter leg whip

From @ToddBrock24f7: Martin was rolled up on after a red-zone run by Tony Pollard, but re-entered the game for the final snaps and said afterward he feels good.

Cowboys right guard Zack Martin gave fans a few nervous moments throughout the week leading up to Sunday’s interconference matchup with the Jets. Then, right at the end of another dominant performance in the team’s 30-10 Week 2 win, he gave one last scare.

The 32-year-old was seen visibly limping around in the fourth quarter and even came out of the lineup for a time. But the eight-time Pro Bowler was back on the field to do the famous “Landry Shift” as part of the Cowboys’ victory formation in the game’s final moments.

And he maintains that there’s no cause for long-term concern.

“I feel good, just got rolled up a little bit,” Martin told reporters at his AT&T Stadium locker after the win. “Just being smart there at the end of the game, but I feel good.”

The injury came on the first play from scrimmage after Jayron Kearse’s interception and return put the Cowboys offense on the Jets’ 17-yard-line with under 12 minutes to go. Running back Tony Pollard plowed his way up the middle for an 8-yard gain, but took out Martin from behind on his way to the turf.

Martin stayed on the ground briefly. He carried on, but was noticeably hobbled for the remainder of the series, which ended in a Brandon Aubrey 30-yard field goal.

The next time the Cowboys had the ball, Martin stayed on the sideline, causing a shuffle along the Dallas offensive line.

Undrafted rookie T.J. Bass, already in at left guard for the injured Chuma Edoga (who was himself subbing for the injured Tyler Smith), shifted over to Martin’s right guard spot; fifth-round draft pick Asim Richards took over at left guard.

Martin was able to return for the contest’s final possession, and said he would have been able to stay in the game if the score had been closer.

Afterward, Martin looked to be getting around with no problem.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he visited with Martin after the game and told media members, “He seems to be okay.”

The team will no doubt be smart with Martin’s ankle as this week of prep starts and could potentially limit his work in practice as the Cowboys gear up for a visit to Arizona in Week 3.

But the perennial All-Pro knows that the team has quality depth players who are ready to step in whenever they’re needed.

“Obviously, Chuma in there, and then T.J. Bass came in, Asim Richards, all those guys. They’re ready to go and they’re ready to play, which is great to see,” Martin said. “The coaches have done a great job getting those guys prepared, knowing their number could be called at any time.”

The Cowboys offensive line cleared the way for 134 rushing yards by Dallas ball carriers on Sunday and held the vaunted New York defense to just one sack in the decisive win.

4 Downs: The biggest turning points in Cowboys’ blowout of the Jets

The Cowboys beat New York with a familiar script in Week 2, here are four downs that show how the Cowboys got it done. | From @BenGrimaldi

The Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Jets 30-10 in the home opener to improve to 2-0 for the first time in the Mike McCarthy era. In victory, the Cowboys followed a familiar script; get ahead early, then go hunting with an opportunistic defense.

This was easy to see coming for the Dallas defense. Playing against a quarterback who has a knack for giving the ball away, as soon as the Cowboys got up double-digits, the floodgates opened, leading to the rout.

Dak Prescott paced the offense with another efficient game where the new Texas Coast Offense was on display. Without wide receiver Brandin Cooks, there was more small ball than anticipated, but the Cowboys still managed to put up 382 yards of total offense and 30 points, despite playing most of the fourth quarter on cruise control.

Here are the four downs that made the difference for the Cowboys in the Week 2 win.

Studs & Duds: Micah has monstrous day, Dak of Lamb delicious in big win over Jets

From @ToddBrock24f7: The Cowboys’ biggest stars showed out in the 30-10 romp, but one WR has practically disappeared. And the offense left points on the field.

The talk all week leading up to the Cowboys’ home opener was the formidable Jets defense. But after Sunday’s game went final, the most impressive thing about the unit was how long they spent on the field. The Cowboys held the ball for nearly three full quarters in a 30-10 romp and were once again dominant in all three phases of the game.

While it was the Cowboys’ biggest stars who shone the brightest at AT&T Stadium, fans will be asking questions about a few aspects of the afternoon that were less than spectacular. One former playmaker, for instance, has all but disappeared from the game plan, and the offensive playcalling left more than a few points on the field.

Here’s a look at Week 2’s studs and duds.

Twitter reacts to Cowboys thumping Jets to move to 2-0

A look at some of the best tweets from before during and following the Cowboys 30-10 win on Sunday. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys have wowed the viewing public once again. After throttling the New York Football Giants in Week 1, the club turned their attention to their home opener. Hosting the New York Jets a week after they lost Aaron Rodgers for the season took some of the steam out of the matchup, but these are professionals.

Dallas proceeded to place a professional-grade whopping on Zach Wilson and the Jets, opening up the scoring with a first-drive touchdown and never looking back. By the time it was over, the Cowboys sat with a 2-0 record and a +60 scoring differential through just two weeks. It was an enjoyable ride for all those watching, and it was all captured on social media.
