Cowboys News: Jerry gives a roster spot, turning focus to Tampa, new destination for Dez?

The Cowboys owner confirms which “bubble player” will make the team, silver linings from an 0-4 preseason, and Dez Bryant going to a rival? | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys’ preseason has- mercifully- come to an end. They had no wins, but they suffered no massive season-plan-altering injuries, either. Perhaps that’s the best that can be said for the 2021 exhibition schedule. Preseason game No. 4 versus Jacksonville was little more than a showcase for relatively-unknown bubble players (at least that’s the way Dallas treated it). So for those who had better things to do with their Sunday afternoon than watch the Cowboys’ 2s and 3s get a beatdown from last year’s worst team in the league, a quick recap kicks things off.

We’ll dive a bit deeper to see who from each position group may have solidified their roster spot as final cuts loom large, including one free agent signee who had his ticket punched by the boss personally. Rookie Kelvin Joseph gives an update on his groin pull, but he doesn’t really provide an answer on his return. We’re looking for the silver linings in a winless preseason, while head coach Mike McCarthy has already closed the book and is looking ahead to September 9th. All that, plus a puzzling tease from a former star wideout about the surprising place former Cowboys wideout Dez Bryant may be headed next. Here’s the News and Notes to start a busy week.

The Dallas Cowboys have been playing a level behind the Jacksonville Jaguars in this preseason finale. With this being Dallas’ fourth exhibition, their top 30 players were ruled out while the Jaguars played their starters for multiple series. It’s led to a dominant first half for the AFC South foe, but that doesn’t mean the Cowboys can’t shine in moments.

That’s exactly what happened when two players fighting to make the 53-man roster came together to squash a drive near the end of the second quarter. Defensive end Ron’Dell Carter, a 2020 UDFA was able to get into the backfield when rushing from the 3T position and hit the throwing arm of CJ Beathard. The ball fluttered out into the waiting arms of rookie safety Israel Mukuamu, a sixth-round pick out of South Carolina.

The Cowboys were unable to capitalize on the turnover as kicker Greg Zuerlein, making his first appearance of the preseason after offseason back surgery, missed a 56-yard field goal attempt as the half expired.

Cowboys CB Kelvin Joseph exits game with groin injury

The second-round corner started in the finale but quickly had to exit. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys likely weren’t planning to start rookie cornerback Kelvin Joseph in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he was still going to be involved in the game. Now folks may have to hold their breath on his availability in two weeks after the Kentucky product left the preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars with an injury.

Joseph apparently suffered a left groin injury and his return is questionable.

Early in the game, on the defense’s first play, Joseph was beaten for a big gain of 38 yards by veteran Phillip Dorsett.

Joseph had been fighting to try and overtake veteran Anthony Brown for the starting spot at left corner, but it’s been obvious from the last two games and the practices in between that Joseph was going to start the year as depth and not in the lineup.
