Clemson football takeaways, analysis: How Tigers survived SMU to reach CFP

What you need to know from Clemson’s thrilling win over SMU sent the Tigers to the College Football Playoff.

With an ACC Championship record 56-yard game-winning Nolan Hauser field goal as time expired, the Clemson Tigers stunned the SMU Mustangs, 34-31, as time expired Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium to land a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Welcome back to the CFP, Clemson. It’s been a while.

The Tigers (10-2 overall) got out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and led 24-7 at halftime, then had to hang on for its postseason life when SMU (10-2) quarterback Kevin Jennings rallied the Mustangs back from a 17-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to tie the game at 31-31 with only 16 seconds remaining in regulation.

Overtime? Forget that, Clemson said.

Here’s how the Tigers pulled off a thrilling win over SMU and punched their ticket to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2020.

When SMU tied the game with 16 seconds left on a four-yard touchdown pass from Jennings to Roderick Daniels, it looked like things were destined for overtime. Only Clemson’s Adam Randall returned the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to give Cade Klubnik and the Tigers’ offense a shot at getting into field goal range.

Klubnik hit Antonio Williams for 17 yards and a first down to the Mustangs’ 39-yard line with three seconds to play. Hauser showed nerves of steel after previously missing a 43-yard field goal in the first half when the Tigers’ protection on the left side of the offensive line broke down — a troubling and recurring theme for Dabo Swinney’s team all season long.

Hauser closed out the Tigers’ scoring in the first half by hitting a 44-yard field goal that made the score 24-7 at intermission.

Cade Klubnik to Bryant Wesco. It was a familiar and much welcomed sight for Clemson fans Saturday night. Wesco exploded for 142 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches — all career-bests.

After stud defensive end T.J. Parker forced a Jennings fumble on the Ponies’ first drive, Clemson took over at the SMU 33-yard line. Klubnik soon hit Wesco on a wide-open 35-yard touchdown pass. Wesco made the grab inside the 20 and waltzed into the end-zone for a quick 7-0 lead just 1:25 into the game.

Clemson’s defense forced a three-and-out and the offense took over in a great spot at the SMU 28-yard line. Wesco’s electric start continued when he took a misdirection and ran 11 yards for a first down to the 17. That set up a quick pass from Klubnik to tight end Jake Briningstool in the flats for a five-yard score and a 14-0 lead. Clemson had two touchdowns in the game’s first four minutes and 13 seconds.

Wesco would strike yet again when the 5-star freshman out of Midlothian, Texas, hauled in a perfect pass from Klubnik on a seam route for a 43-yard touchdown to put Clemson ahead 21-7 with 3:28 to play in the first quarter. The drive covered 73 yards in eight plays.

Tight ends can be a great weapon and a quarterback’s best friend, and that’s just what Briningstool was for Klubnik in the red zone. Briningstool had four catches for 23 yards and two touchdowns.

After his five-yard catch in the first quarter that put Clemson up 14-0, Briningstool got the ball again in the waning seconds of the third quarter. On third-and-goal from the SMU 5-yard line, Klubnik found Briningstool on a short cut for a touchdown that put the Tigers up 31-14 entering the fourth quarter.

It wasn’t just the catches Briningstool made, either. In the second quarter, he recovered a fumble after Klubnik was hit from behind that resulted in a 10-yard Clemson gain.

Cade Klubnik was an absolute stud

The big games that Wesco and Briningstool had wouldn’t have been possible without their general at quarterback.

Klubnik, who led Clemson to an ACC title two years earlier, was 24-of-41 for 262 yards and four touchdowns. Despite the aforementioned fumble, the Tigers’ quarterback ended the night without a turnover.

His 17-yard completion to Randall in the final seconds was a throw that a 5-star quarterback should make in games of this magnitude. And Klubnik’s 8-for-10 start for 120 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter ultimately proved too much for SMU to overcome.

Clemson’s defense made some big plays

Most people thought this would be a high-scoring game and it was. Yes, the Tigers’ defense allowed SMU to crawl out of a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit, but Wes Goodwin’s unit also made some pretty explosive plays — one of which directly led to points. Parker’s strip sack of Jennings on the Mustangs’ third snap of the game led to Clemson’s first score.

With SMU facing third-and-10 in the second quarter, Khalil Barnes made a heads-up play when he reached down and picked off an ill-advised pass from Jennings for an interception at the SMU 47. While the ensuing drive yielded no points, it marked the third time the Tigers had started in SMU territory in the first half.

Quote of the night: ‘So you’re saying there’s a chance?’ Dabo Swinney quotes ‘Dumb and Dumber’

Bob Donnan-Imagn Images

Dabo Swinney doesn’t care who the Tigers will play next. The affable Clemson coach, declared obsolete by many in the national media all throughout the offseason for his stance on the transfer portal, was a bundle of joy in his postgame interview with ABC’s Molly McGrath.

Swinney even quoted Lloyd Christmas, the iconic ‘Dumb and Dumber’ character played by Jim Carrey in the 1994 comedy.

Swinney told McGrath:

“Hey, it’s a new season, and we’re 1-0 in the postseason. And now we’ve got a chance and I think Lloyd Christmas said it best: ‘So you’re saying there’s a chance?!”

There is always a chance in college football, especially in 2024.

Nick Saban makes bold prediction for Clemson football in ACC title clash vs. SMU

You won’t want to miss what Nick Saban had to say about Clemson and Dabo Swinney ahead of tonight’s ACC Championship Game.

Arguably the single most respected figure in the sport of college football thinks the Clemson Tigers will take down the SMU Mustangs in an upset in tonight’s ACC Championship Game.

That person is former Alabama football coach Nick Saban, who joined Rece Davis, Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit on the set of “College GameDay” from Atlanta Saturday morning.

While previewing Clemson-SMU, Saban picked the Tigers (9-3 overall) to beat the Mustangs (11-1) and punch their ticket to the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Explaining his prediction, Saban offered praise for Tigers coach (and friend) Dabo Swinney in particular. Saban said:

“I like Clemson. I think Dabo being in this game many, many times before, his team knows how to prepare for it, and I think the weather is going to have some impact on how SMU plays.”

Saban has a point about Swinney’s presence in these games. Since 2011, Clemson is 8-0 in ACC title games. The Tigers haven’t lost an ACC title game since 2009, Swinney’s first full season at Clemson.

As for the weather, overnight lows in Charlotte are expected to drop to near freezing temperatures Saturday night.

Clemson vs. SMU is set for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff at Bank of America Stadium. The game will be televised on ABC.

USA TODAY Sports experts predict Clemson-SMU winner in ACC Championship

Here’s who USA TODAY Sports experts think will win Saturday’s ACC Championship between Clemson and SMU.

Despite three losses, the Clemson Tigers can clinch a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff this Saturday.

Clemson (9-3 overall) fell 17-14 to the rival South Carolina Gamecocks last Saturday in what looked to be a final blow to the Tigers’ playoff hopes. But the Miami Hurricanes suffered a 42-38 upset loss at Syracuse hours later, giving Clemson a spot in the ACC title game.

The Tigers will face the SMU Mustangs (11-1, 8-0) Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte with a playoff berth on the line. The winner will have a near lock on a first-round bye.

On Thursday, USA TODAY Sports’ college football experts released their predictions for every conference championship game this week, including Clemson vs. SMU.

Only one member of the six-man panel of Paul Myerberg, Dan Wolken, Erick Smith, Eddie Timanus, Jordan Mendoza and Scooby Axson picked the Tigers to beat SMU. Myerberg picked Clemson to win while his five colleagues all favored the Mustangs.

ESPN Analytics’ updated Matchup Predictor currently gives SMU a 53.8 percent chance to beat Clemson.

Kickoff for Clemson vs. SMU is set for 8 p.m. ET Saturday. The game can be seen on ABC, with Sean McDonough and Greg McElroy calling the action from Charlotte. It will mark the first time the Tigers and Mustangs have ever met on the gridiron.

Clemson is in search of its ninth ACC title under Dabo Swinney and its first since 2022. The Tigers won six straight conference championships from 2015-2020. Clemson fell five spots to No. 17 in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll. SMU moved up two spots to No. 7.

SMU clinched a berth in the ACC title game on Nov. 23 when the Mustangs defeated Virginia, 33-7. Coach Rhett Lashlee’s team defeated Cal, 38-6, last Saturday in Dallas.

Dabo Swinney says transfer wide receiver ‘hasn’t burned a bridge’ with Clemson

Swinney still has a lot of love for this now former Clemson wide receiver.

Wide receiver Troy Stellato is moving on from Clemson, with the redshirt junior set to enter the transfer portal when it opens next week. Stellato, who has two years of eligibility left, will not join the team for Saturday’s ACC Championship Game against SMU.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney commented on Stellato’s decision Wednesday. TheTigers head coach having nothing but love for the now former Tiger.

“He just wants a bigger role,” Swinney said. “He’s a great kid. Y’all know I love the ‘Italian Stallion.’ He’s one of my favorite dudes. He loves football. He just wants to be the one or two, and that’s just not where he is. He could be, and he has been here or there. But with the guys that we have on the roster and the guys coming back, he just wants a little bigger role. It’s not that big a deal.”

Injuries hampered the early part of Stellato’s career, but he became a regular contributor over the past two seasons, starting six games in 2023 and five more this year. His 2024 campaign was cut short following an eight-snap performance against Pitt on November 16, as a thumb injury ultimately required surgery and ended his season.

Stellato’s decision comes as he seeks a bigger role moving forward. This season, he tallied 25 catches for 264 yards and a touchdown, highlighted by a career-best seven receptions and 74 yards against Virginia. While Stellato showed promise in Clemson’s offense, he’ll now look for opportunities elsewhere.

Will Clemson wear home or away jerseys for ACC Championship Game vs SMU?

Clemson will likely wear this uniform combination Saturday night when they face SMU in the ACC Championship Game.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers are one win away from returning to the College Football Playoff as ACC champions for the first time since 2020. Standing in their way is an SMU Mustangs program in their first season in the conference.

SMU officially joined the league along with California last summer during the latest wave of conference realignment. The Ponies have made quite an impression in their first season as a league member, going 11-1 overall to reach the ACC Championship Game.

Clemson (9-3 overall, 7-1 ACC) advanced to the conference title game when the Miami Hurricanes fell 42-38 to the Syracuse Orange. The Tigers would clinch a berth in the playoff with a win over the Mustangs Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Kickoff for Clemson vs. SMU is set for 8 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC, with Sean McDonough and Greg McElroy calling the action. Molly McGrath will report from the sidelines.

But what uniforms will Clemson wear for its first ACC Championship Game appearance in two years?

Well, the Tigers are the designated visiting team for Saturday’s game. Visiting teams typically wear their road white jerseys, though schools designated as the home team have the option to wear white — a “Right of First Refusal” of sorts for teams at neutral-site venues.

As a Clemson official who spoke to Clemson Wire reminded us Tuesday, the Tigers typically wear their orange pants in the ACC Championship Game regardless of home or away status.

As the designated away team, Clemson wore its white jerseys over orange pants in 2020 when the Tigers defeated Notre Dame 34-10 in the ACC title game. That was Notre Dame’s lone season as a conference member in football, a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Clemson also wore white jerseys over orange pants in the 2018 ACC title game against Pitt and in the 2016 conference championship game vs. Virginia Tech. They wore orange jerseys over orange pants in the 2019 ACC title game vs. Virginia, as well as in 2017 (vs. Miami) and 2015 (vs. North Carolina).

If the past is any indication, the Tigers will take the field Saturday night in Charlotte in their white jerseys over orange pants. If so, it will mark the first time since last year’s 38-35 Gator Bowl win over Kentucky that Clemson has worn its white jersey/orange pants uniform combination.

As of Tuesday, neither team had officially announced uniform combinations for Saturday’s game.

Dabo Swinney on Sammy Brown barley playing in the 4th quarter against South Carolina

Swinney on Brown’s lack of playtime in the fourth quarter.

Clemson football’s defense dominated South Carolina’s offense for three quarters in the Tigers’ 17-14 rivalry loss on Saturday. The Tigers stifled quarterback LaNorris Sellers and the Gamecocks’ rushing attack, holding them to just 240 total yards, including 127 on the ground, while allowing only seven points.

Much of that was courtesy of linebacker Sammy Brown, who was everywhere during the first three quarters. Brown was relentless, making nine tackles, one sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss while consistently disrupting Sellers and running back Rocket Sanders. Despite that, Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin made the puzzling decision to pull Brown off the field in the fourth quarter.

The move, head coach Dabo Swinney said, was a shift in defensive packages. “We felt they were going to change the way they were going to play, but nothing more than that,” Swinney said. But the Gamecocks didn’t change their game plan. Instead , they relied more heavily on the run, carrying 17 times for 140 yards in the final quarter—more than they had managed in the first three quarters combined.

Brown briefly returned for one snap in the fourth quarter, which ended with Khalil Barnes’ interception to end a would-be South Carolina scoring drive. Yet, the Gamecocks kept rolling, with him on the sidelines for the most part. Given how limited South Carolina was in the passing game – with heavy reliance on the run – it’s a head-scratcher why Clemson ever sat Brown.

Dabo Swinney on the officiating in Clemson football’s loss to Syracuse

Swinney on the officiating in Clemson vs. South Carolina.

Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney expressed frustration with officiating after the No. 12 Tigers fell 17-14 to No. 15 South Carolina in Saturday’s rivalry clash at Death Valley.

“There were several questionable things out there today,” Swinney said postgame. “But we still had plenty of opportunity to win the game.”

One pivotal moment came in the third quarter with Clemson ahead 14-7 and driving at the South Carolina 32-yard line. On a trick play, quarterback Cade Klubnik pitched the ball to running back Phil Mafah, who stumbled while catching it and tried to toss it to Bryant Wesco. Mafah was initially ruled down, but after review, officials determined he never secured the ball, resulting in a live-ball fumble recovered by the Gamecocks.

“It was a tough break,” Swinney said. “We thought he was down, and it looked like we had a good play lined up.”

Earlier in the game, another review overturned a completed pass from Klubnik to Wesco near the sideline, ruling that Wesco’s foot was out of bounds. Swinney noted the impact of those calls.

“All the reviews went against us today,” he said. “But we had every opportunity to win. Strange things happen sometimes, and you have to overcome them.”

Dabo Swinney says ‘everybody is pissed’ after Clemson’s loss to South Carolina

Swinney and the Tigers are not happy.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers fell to rivals South Carolina 17-14 in front of their home crowd on Saturday in a brutal loss that felt like Clemson handed their in-state rivals the win.

Even so, Clemson’s season isn’t over. Syracuse did the job for the Tigers’ taking down Miami and sending the Tigers to an ACC Championship. A team that almost threw away their season gets one more chance at the College Football Playoff.

To make a run at the playoff and win the ACC Championship, the Tigers will need to learn from their mistakes. To do so, they’ll have to watch the South Carolina game tape and see where they went wrong, something that won’t be pretty for Swinney. However, that won’t be happening soon as Swinney was asked about getting together with the team and watching it back.

“No,” Swinney said, shaking his head. “No. No. No. Everybody is pissed. There is a lot of disappointment. There is no gathering. We did not get the job done today.

“I’ll watch it to see what happens, but whatever God has for us, He has for us,” he said. “That is how I look at it. We will know our next step here pretty soon. Then we will pick ourselves up, dust off and see if we can go finish the way we want to finish. Then learn and grow from everything this year and see if we can get better next year.”

Clemson will need to learn from their mistakes, as gave away the game on Saturday.

Syracuse’s Fran Brown hilariously took credit for getting Clemson into the ACC title game

Dabo Swinney probably doesn’t see it entirely that way, but Fran Brown is at least partially right.

The ACC championship game next weekend is set, and while we already knew No. 9 SMU would be playing for a title in its first season in the conference, Saturday’s games led to No. 12 Clemson officially being the Mustangs’ opponent.

And it’s all thanks to Syracuse — at least, according to the Orange’s head coach Fran Brown.

The No. 6 Miami Hurricanes would have advanced to the ACC championship game to take on SMU if they beat Syracuse on Saturday. But they didn’t. They lost, 42-38, for their second conference and overall loss this season, which put Clemson — which lost, 17-14, to No. 15 South Carolina on Saturday — in the conference title game instead.

To that, Brown says, you’re welcome, Clemson. And he hilariously pointed that out in his post-game interview after declaring: “Syracuse is back!”

“Hey, Dabo Swinney! Congrats! I got you in, baby!”

Swinney probably doesn’t see it entirely that way, but Brown is at least partially right that the Tigers wouldn’t be playing for a championship if Syracuse lost.

Clemson football heading to the ACC Championship game against SMU

Clemson is heading to the ACC Championship.

Despite an earlier crushing 17-14 loss to South Carolina, Clemson football’s College Football Playoff hopes are still alive. The Tigers, 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the ACC, received the unexpected lifeline they needed as Syracuse stunned No. 6 Miami, 42-38, to clear Clemson’s path to the ACC Championship Game.

Clemson will next play SMU (11-1, 8-0 ACC) a week from Saturday in Charlotte. The winner will clinch a spot in the Playoff, though Clemson’s loss likely affects its seeding and could position the Tigers to take the road in the first round. The stakes are monumental as Clemson seeks to capitalize on its ninth appearance in the ACC title game.

The matchup will be a first-ever meeting between the two programs. SMU represents the surprise story – it finished the regular season unbeaten in conference action. Clemson seeks to bounce back after an up-and-down year. Kickoff for Saturday’s game is scheduled for 8 p.m. on ABC.
