‘Cyberpunk 2077’ and ‘The Witcher 3’ next-gen upgrades might not arrive this year

At least they’re backwards compatible?

Anyone eagerly anticipating the next-gen upgrades for The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 might be in for a long wait, as developer CD Projekt Red said it couldn’t promise either will come out in 2021.

Since Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch last year, CD Projekt Red has spent the lion’s share of 2021 patching the game. Not always to great results, though. During CD Projekt Red’s most recent shareholders call, SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski stated that the company wants to learn from past mistakes.

“The target is to release the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 late this year,” Nowakowski said via VGC. “At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year and taking into account that this project still remains in development, we can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change.”

Nowakowski continued: “With The Witcher 3, the situation is slightly different in the way that this is being tackled by the external team mainly, which is Saber Interactive, the company that we have worked with before on Switch and also with updates in the past.”

While it’s easy to understand why some fans might be disappointed by this news, avoiding another catastrophe should be CD Projekt Red’s priority right now.

Cyberpunk 2077 roundtable impressions: Why you should wait to play on a next-gen console

Does Cyberpunk 2077 live up to the hype? Here are the good (and bad) things we’ve seen in Night City so far.

After several delays, the most anticipated video game release of 2020 has finally dropped – but CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 is getting mixed reviews from critics and fans alike.

On Monday, the developer publicly apologized for the state of the game when running on base PS4 and Xbox One consoles, which simply aren’t equipped to handle a game attempting to push the limits of six-year-old hardware. Even when running on next-gen systems or high-end PCs, some gamers are running into a plethora of bugs and performance issues.

Does Cyberpunk 2077 live up to the hype? Is it the game of the year in 2020? Given all the technical problems, should you avoid playing the game on a base PS4?

After spending the weekend in Night City, FTW’s Nick Schwartz (who played on PC) and Mike Sykes (who played on PS5) attempt to answer the tough questions.

Cyberpunk 2077 looks like the true next-gen experience we’ve been waiting for

Cyberpunk 2077 is almost here, and the latest trailer looks incredible.

A new console generation is upon us, but while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X are certainly impressive bits of hardware, there aren’t many games at launch that deliver jaw-dropping experiences. Sure, you can run the new Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty game at a higher framerate, but these games deliver another dose of something you’ve probably already played before.

Even the most well-received next-gen launch game according to critics and fans alike, Demon’s Souls, is a (brilliant) remake of a PlayStation 3 game. It’s a visual masterpiece and one of the best overall launch games in several generations, no doubt, but it’s not exactly a brand new gameplay experience.

But the wait is almost over for the most hyped release of 2020 – and while it’s not technically even launching on next-gen consoles, it looks like it could deliver the start of the next generation of games. Cyberpunk 2077 was originally slated to release back in April, and has been delayed multiple times since then, back to December 10th.

Developer CD Projekt Red released a new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 on Thursday, which gives a thorough overview of the game – and it looks stellar.
