Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty DLC adds a new ending to the RPG

Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC has several endings of its own and even adds a new ending to the original RPG based on your choices

Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC has several endings of its own and even adds a new one to the original RPG. Cyberpunk 2077 director Gabe Amatangelo made the comments to WCCFtech and elaborated a bit more on who’s involved in this new ending to IGN.

“[Phantom Liberty has] different endings based on how things play out,” Amatangelo said. “Then, based on the ending within Phantom Liberty, you can unlock a new ending in the base game [which] has to do with your new relationships and characters and situations.”

Amatangelo told IGN the key character in Phantom Liberty’s main story and new ending is Songbird, the personal netrunner to the president of the New United States – the esteemed personage you’re supposed to protect.

“As the trailer shows, Songbird brings you in with the promise of being able to handle your issue with the relic,” Amatangelo said. “It will affect outcomes in the base game [and] the story of Phantom Liberty within itself has multiple different variations of endings.”

Whether that means Cyberpunk 2077 will actually get an ending that isn’t sad remains to be seen. If Phantom Liberty is anything like the base game, figuring out how your choices affect the ending you get will be quite the challenge, though perhaps slightly less confusing given that Phantom Liberty unfolds in the confined area of Dogtown instead of the vast open world of Night City.

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty launches for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on Sep. 26, 2023.

Xbox Games Showcase 2023 recap: Fable, Avowed, naked Yakuza, and more

The Xbox Games Showcase packed two dozen trailers into just an hour, and here’s every Xbox announcement you might have missed from it

The Xbox Games Showcase packed two dozen trailers into just an hour, and while there were hardly any release dates, there was, at least, a better look at what Xbox has coming in the next 12 months or so. Xbox showed off a quick look at Fable, featuring Richard Ayoade, along with the first glimpse at Avowed gameplay, while Atlus flexed its presence with a whopping three new games, including the long-awaited Project: Re Fantasy.

RGG showed up once again with Like A Dragon hero Ichiban, sans clothing, Cyberpunk 2077 DLC finally has a release date, and Overwatch 2 is gearing up for a pretty big sixth season.

Here’s every Xbox Games Showcase 2023 announcement you might have missed.

CDPR announced Cyberpunk 2077 DLC Phantom Liberty release date

A year after first teasing the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, CD Projekt RED finally announced a Phantom Liberty release date

A year after first teasing the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, CD Projekt RED finally announced a Phantom Liberty release date at the Xbox Games Showcase. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty will launch on Sep. 26, 2023,  for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Windows and Steam, PS4, and PS5, and while some pre-order rumors are swirling, there’s still no price or pre-order information yet.

In Phantom Liberty, you play as V in a timeline presumably before the end of Cyberpunk 2077. Your task is infiltrating a group of terrorists in Dogtown on a mission to rescue the president of the New United States of America, with Idris Elba in a starring role as secret agent Solomon Reed. V isn’t suddenly acting for the greater good, though. They’re after a cure, a way to stop the “ticking bomb” in their head.

Keanu Reeves introduced a new Phantom Liberty trailer showing the dangers of Dogtown, including what looks like some terrifying new foes and a much heavier emphasis on narrative this time around, likely thanks to the more restricted setting of Dogtown instead of the sprawling streets of Night CIty.

The Phantom Liberty release date is only a few months away, so we’ll probably be seeing more of V’s next adventure soon.

No, PlayStation isn’t buying the Witcher and Cyberpunk devs

Despite rumors to the contrary, it turns out PlayStation isn’t buying CD Projekt RED, makers of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077

Despite rumors to the contrary, it turns out PlayStation isn’t buying CD Projekt RED, makers of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077. CDPR CEO Adam Kiciński said in the company’s latest earnings call that the studio isn’t for sale, regardless of who may be interested (thanks, VGC).

“I can repeat what we have been saying throughout the years – CD Projekt is not for sale,” Kiciński said. “We want to remain independent. We have, I believe an excellent strategy. Not easy to execute, for sure, but it’s very exciting to follow our own path. So it’s a pure rumor.”

Rumors of this kind became more common after Microsoft announced its intention to buy Activision-Blizzard in 2022, which seemed to kick off a spree of acquisition announcements from major publishers, including Sony. Consumers speculated and even hoped that small-to-mid-sized publishers, including Capcom, Square Enix, and CDPR, might get swept up by the likes of Sony or Microsoft, though why this was a desirable thing wasn’t always clear.

And it turns out none of the publishers really needed someone to buy them. Capcom announced record sales thanks to Monster Hunter and Resident Evil 4, and Square Enix is gearing up to release Final Fantasy 16 in June 2023, after announcing new IP during the May State of Play presentation.

CDPR, meanwhile, is working on several new Witcher projects and plans to show Phantom Liberty, the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, during Summer Game Fest.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion details are coming in June

Summer Games Fest 2023 will highlight what’s next for the popular RPG.

Every diehard fan of Cyberpunk 2077 has been eagerly awaiting more information on its first major expansion – luckily for them, it’ll be shown off relatively soon.

Last week, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be playable at Summer Games Fest 2023 for media and influencers.

“At [Summer Game Fest 2023]: Play Days, we’ll have hands-on sessions for press and content creators,” CD Projekt Red said on Twitter. “We’re also planning plenty of hands-on opportunities for our community at a later date, so stay tuned!”

It’s not much to go on, but at least now we have some idea of how far along Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty might be. CD Projekt Red went on to clarify on Twitter that fans will “get a chance to play the game” sometime before launch but was tight-lipped on any details.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was shown off back in September 2023 as a current-generation update – meaning it will not be available on PS4 and Xbox One. It’s apparently a spy-thriller that takes place entirely within an all-new sector of Night City.

Beyond that, we still don’t know a heck of a lot about Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty – although Idris Elba is joining the cast.

Cyberpunk 2077’s overdrive mode adds beautiful ray tracing

The futuristic open world RPG keeps on improving.

We’re more than two years away from Cyberpunk 2077’s infamous launch, and developer CD Projekt Red is still slowly ironing out the kinks. Thankfully, the latest patch implements some much-requested ray tracing features.

On Tuesday, Patch 1.62 for Cyberpunk 2077 came out on PC. This update’s much-touted Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode is, without question, the biggest improvement – adding full “ray-traced, aka path-traced, rendering mode” to Cyberpunk 2077, according to the official patch notes.

CD Projekt Red has been working closely with NVIDIA on this technology, and it’s currently only available on top-tier graphics cards. Those of you with an RTX 4090 – rejoice! The rest of us must settle for the video below to see most of these effects in action.

“We’re proud of [Overdrive Mode],” CD Projekt Red said. “It pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in technology. However, because it is so new and fundamentally different from what we’ve been using so far, we know it’s not going to be perfect from the start and players might experience some issues.”

So if (like me) you’re still rocking an older GPU – maybe don’t play around with these settings.

There’s still a bright future ahead for Cyberpunk 2077. The Phantom Liberty expansion can’t be too far off (no release date yet, though), and CD Projekt Red’s new Boston studio is already working on a full sequel.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners wins Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year award

The Cyberpunk 2077 spinoff continues to be a huge hit.

There wasn’t a bigger sleeper hit during 2022’s fall anime season than Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which just won Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year Award.

The announcement came during Crunchyroll’s 2023 Anime Awards over the weekend, where the series beat out heavy hitters like Demon Slayer, Spy x Family, Lycoris Recoil, Ranking of Kings, and Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2.

“It’s a great honor,” reads a statement on the official Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Twitter account. “We’d like to thank everyone for their support, votes, and for watching our anime.”

Additionally, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners also won the best voice acting performance award for the English dub.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners came out to a pretty glowing reception last fall, so it’s not surprising that it scored top honors. Expectations for the Cyberpunk 2077 spinoff were pretty high before release, specifically because of Studio Trigger’s involvement – the studio behind anime classics like Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia. In fact, the hype was so palpable that Cyberpunk 2077 had a significant bump in popularity.

Cyberpunk 2077‘s world will continue to grow with the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion later this year – which stars Idris Elba (yes, really).

Cyberpunk 2077 is Steam Deck verified at last

Over a year after Valve’s handheld launched, you can finally play Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam Deck, presumably with no issues

Over a year after Valve’s handheld launched, you can finally play Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam Deck, presumably with no issues. CD Projekt RED made the announcement on the game’s official Twitter account. It’s the latest positive development in the troubled game’s ongoing redemption arc and renewed popularity, following the Edgerunner anime’s success and a substantial influx of players on Steam.

You probably could’ve played Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam Deck before anyway, though. Even games with a playable or untested badge on Steam Deck often still run as if they were optimized for Valve’s handheld platform. Some that aren’t verified and probably never will be only have flags for minor issues such as requiring external logins or featuring very tiny text.

Naturally, the Steam Deck’s smaller screen, lower resolution, and less powerful processors mean the experience isn’t quite on par with what you could potentially have on console or PC. Still, it’s a small price to pay for playing such a massive RPG without being tethered to a TV or monitor, and you’ll be able to play Cyberpunk’s DLC Phantom Liberty and have portable Idris Elba on Steam Deck when the expansion launches later in 2023.

It’s a busy time for CDPR. The studio is also developing The Witcher 4 and a full remake from the ground up of the first Witcher game, built in Unreal Engine 5.

Idris Elba stars in Cyberpunk 2077 DLC Phantom Liberty

CD Projekt RED debuted a new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC and revealed Idris Elba in a leading role

CD Projekt RED released a new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC Phantom Liberty during The Game Awards 2022, and while Dogtown, a new setting in Night City, was ostensibly the main attraction, CDPR dropped a surprise reveal in there as well. Idris Elba (Luther, Sonic The Hedgehog) is joining the cast alongside Keanu Reeves.

Elba plays Solomon Reed, an agent for the New United States of America and V’s only ally in their desperate attempt to infiltrate the organization. Reeves returns as Johnny Silverhand, which we knew from the expansion’s first trailer, and apparently, the dead rockstar has a bit of history with Dogtown.

It’s a brutal place that poses some kind of threat to the rest of Night City, though CDPR is still keeping its relationship to the main Cyberpunk story under wraps for now.

Reed steps in to lend a hand and bring his own vision for Dogtown to life, a vision that involves burning the place to the ground. It’s a “peace at all costs” strategy and one that sounds like Dogtown won’t win the upcoming fight.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC will release at some point in 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It’s a paid expansion, though CDPR hasn’t announced a price yet.

The studio is also developing The Witcher 4 and a full remake from the ground up of the first Witcher game, built in Unreal Engine 5.

Cyberpunk 2077 mod brings the RPG in line with Edgerunners anime

A new Cyberpunk mod adds cyberpsychosis from the Edgerunners anime and a new RPG element to contend with

A new Cyberpunk 2077 mod brings one of the Edgerunner anime’s unique features to CD Projekt Red‘s sci-fi RPG and adds another layer of consideration to upgrading your character. The “Wannabe Edgerunner” mod from creator DJ_Kovrik, available on NexusMods, adds cyberpsychosis, a feature introduced where certain cybernetic modifications would decrease the user’s humanity and eventually result in the person losing their mind.

With the mod installed, V gains a new humanity stat. Every piece of cybernetic equipment you install reduces your humanity by a certain amount, and you start experiencing negative symptoms after passing humanity thresholds. These symptoms are mild at first and only include visual changes, but at higher thresholds, you start experiencing debuffs that affect your combat prowess.

While the condition showed up in the Cyberpunk tabletop game as a problem players had to manage themselves, the base Cyberpunk 2077 video game only included enemies afflicted with cyberpsychosis as obstacles to overcome. Despite extensive personal modifications, you never had to contend with it yourself. However, David Martinez, protagonist of the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime, has to manage the symptoms himself, among others in the show.

Using cyberware and killing enemies also temporarily reduces your humanity with the mod, adding an extra layer of strategy to normally mundane encounters. New items and tools let you track and modify your humanity, including a widget tracker and an injector that stabilizes the stat.
