Steam Winter Sale deals have begun, with even more discounts than we saw during Black Friday. Discounts are everywhere, on major AAA games including Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3, indie gems such as Case of the Golden Idol and Slay the Princess, and some modern classics in the mix as well. The Steam Winter Sale deals are live through Jan.4, 2024.

The PlayStation Store holiday sale deals have begun, with big discounts on some of the best PS5 games of 2023, old classics, and hidden gems you might’ve missed in a year crammed with releases. There’s a discount for everyone, whether you’ve been waiting for Jedi Survivor or Cyberpunk 2077 to go on sale or want to try out award winners such as Sea of Stars and Alan Wake 2. Red Dead 2 is on sale, as always, and Larian even threw in a little Baldur’s Gate 3 price cut as a treat – emphasis on “little.”

Free Cyberpunk 2077 2.1 update spices up romance and bosses

If you remember CDPR saying they have no Cyberpunk 2077 updates planned after 2.0, no you don’t. The plan has apparently changed. The studio outlined what’s new in the free Cyberpunk 2077 2.1 update during a recent livestream, and it includes new romance activities and better bosses in the action game.

The update, which applies to the base game and Phantom Liberty, goes live on Dec. 5, 2023, for all platforms, and it’s also making good on an old promise CDPR made back in the original trailer: a subway system.

“Our direction when we wanted was to make sure players have a way to really be in the world and have an immersive way to travel through the world,” quest director Pawel Sasko said during the stream. “This is designed to be a role-playing feature.”

The update introduces 19 subway station points that you can use for fast travel.

It revamps several boss fights, including the Adam Smasher fight, where Smasher should behave more like his Edgerunners anime counterpart, and it adds new hangout options for V and their chosen partner. That last feature was a sticking point for many fans after 2.0 launched. For all of Phantom Liberty’s improvements, it added nothing in the romance department.

V also gets a portable radio, so you can listen to the sounds of Night City anywhere – except during scenes with scripted music – and you can replay the race missions for more rewards, including new cars. There are more cars in the update as well, more motorcycle tricks and combat options, and Johnny Silverhand’s Porsche 911.

CDPR said Cyberpunk 2077 2.1 adds even more new features they haven’t even touched on yet. Whether this is actually the last, last update or the studio has more up its sleeves, the team didn’t say.

Cyberpunk 2077, Hitman, some of the best anime games, classic Yakuza, and more are all up for grabs, and best of all, pretty much everything we’ve listed in our roundup works on the Steam Deck and the newly-announced Steam Deck OLED.

Cyberpunk 2077 2 is in development, and CD Projekt Red has high, Witcher 3-shaped hopes for the action game. Narrative director Igor Sarzyński told PC Gamer the team wants the next Cyberpunk game to push the boundaries of the studio’s storytelling.

“Consider The Witcher games and how much they changed with each installment, Sarzyński said. “We want a similar evolution here.”

The Witcher 3 introduced a bold narrative choice that you don’t typically see in open-world games by splitting the story between Geralt’s viewpoint and Ciri’s. That scale, combined with the world itself and the numerous deep side stories for players to uncover, played a significant role in raising the genre’s standards – and expectations from CDPR.

The studio promised a big leap forward with Cyberpunk 2077 when it launched in 2020, but even aside from the bugs and other issues that plagued it at the time, Sarzyński says he recognizes the team didn’t quite pull it off.

“Cyberpunk 2077 was our first venture into a futuristic sci-fi world with a ton of new gameplay mechanics, narrative tone, themes, and art direction,” Sarzyński said. “Some of the stuff worked almost right out of the box, such as the art, city design, music, interactive scene system, playstyles. Other aspects took more time to get right, like character progression, NPC interactivity, and optimization. That’s natural; it’s impossible to nail everything on your first try.”

Sarzyński says the team has a better idea of how to make a more immersive world now, though, and is working hard to make a stronger experience.

CDPR is also working on several other projects, including a ground-up remake of The Witcher and a new entry in the series, so even with a new studio, it’s no surprise that Cyberpunk 2077 2 doesn’t have a vague release window yet.

As usual with developer CD Projekt RED’s games, the launch rollout is a bit different depending on whether you play on PC or console. You’ll get access the earliest if you play on Xbox or PlayStation and fiddle with your region setting, though the process on PlayStation is a bit of a nuisance. PC players in the U.S. have the easiest method – just waiting until the afternoon on the day before launch. Time zone differences mean the midnight launch in Europe is around the end of the business day in the States.

Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC expansion Phantom Liberty is right around the corner, and the action game’s developer has some advice for PC players: test your cooling system. And everything else, for that matter.

Apparently, Phantom Liberty and the overhaul that comes with Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 may put a lot of strain on your computer. CD Projekt Red’s lead scene programmer Philip Pierściński gave the advice on Twitter and recommended players use Cinebench to test their current setup and ensure they could actually run the game.

“Before release CP2077 2.0 and PL please check conditions of your cooling systems in PC,” Pierściński said. “We use all what you have, so workload on CPU 90% on 8 core is expected. To save your time please run Cinebench or similar and check stability of your systems.”

That sounds ominous, but Pierściński clarified in the post’s comments that even eighth-generation i7 chips would be able to run the game, and those are six years old at this point. If you rely on simultaneous multithreading, though, Pierściński you should make sure you’re using a chip with no more than eight cores. If yours has 12 cores or more, he recommends you shut the feature off.

We agree with articles that up to 8 cores SMT is good. Above, so 12 and more better turn it off. But you will be able to set it if you think differently.

Pierściński didn’t say why the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update will create such a burden on CPUs, though the free update and DLC expansion add quite a few new systems to the game, including new AI systems for police behavior and new skills. There’s a new Cyberpunk 2077 ending as well.

Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update doesn’t have a firm release date yet, though Phantom Liberty will launch on Sep. 26, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
