Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers matchup, with MLB betting odds, picks and best bets

The Chicago Cubs (27-20) and Milwaukee Brewers (20-23) put a lid on a three-game Miller Park series Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Cubs-Brewers MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Cubs at Brewers: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Alec Mills vs. RHP Adrian Houser

Mills has registered a 4.74 ERA and 1.21 through eight starts this season.

  • 27-year-old who has logged a 4.19 ERA over 27 career games over parts of four seasons.
  • Went 6 IP, allowing 4 ER against Milwaukee in a Wrigley Field start on Aug. 14.

Houser owns a 5.48 ERA and 1.45 WHIP over 8 GS (43 IP).

  • Has deserved a better fate than a mid-5s ERA. Has been beaten up by unkind rates around the margins (64% LOB, .331 BABIP, 28% home-run rate on fly balls).
  • Has coughed up 18 ER over his last 21.2 IP.

Moneyline (ML)

The Cubs (+115) and Brewers (-129) have split the first two games of this NC Central series. The games have been pitcher’s duels: Just seven combined runs were scored over Friday and Saturday. That fits with recent struggles for the Chicago offense, which is usually the better of these two. The Cubs are just 5-6 with a .618 OPS over their last 11 games.

Milwaukee has the better bullpen but its not well rested among the high-leverage guys. Mills has tremendous stuff against right-handed batters (career .568 OPS allowed) and a shaky line against lefty bats (.939). Milwaukee’s lineup skews leans left and has been improving of late against right-hander pitchers. BREWERS (-129) is the play.

New to sports betting? A winning $50 bet on the Brewers returns a profit of $39.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Houser is way undervalued coming in on such a slump. But his support numbers aren’t far off from what held up a 3.72 ERA a year ago. He does a credible job in limiting hard contact and may well be worth a run of differential here all by himself. Take that extra margin and make a play on the BREWERS -1.5 (+150).

Over/Under (O/U)

The game has a high-ish total, and there’s a slight lean on the Under, but likely not a playable lean unless a favorable price pops into the equation. Sit out the UNDER 9.5 (-110).

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Milwaukee Brewers (20-22) topped the Chicago Cubs (26-20) 1-0 in Friday’s series opener. The two NL Central rivals will continue a three-game series at Miller Park with a 7:10 p.m. ET first pitch Saturday. Below, we analyze the Cubs-Brewers MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Cubs at Brewers: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Kyle Hendricks vs. LHP Brett Anderson

Hendricks: 5-4, 9 starts, 3.41 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 6.8 K/9, 0.9 BB/9, 58 IP

  • Had his best game of the year against these Brewers in his first start of 2020, as he pitched a complete-game shutout at Wrigley Field in Chicago. He struck out 9 with no walks and just 3 hits allowed.
  • Pitched 8 innings of one-run ball but gave up 7 hits against the St. Louis Cardinals his last time out.

Anderson: 2-3, 7 starts, 4.64 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 5.7 K/9, 1.9 BB/9, 33 IP

  • Faced the Cubs just once this season and took the loss despite holding them to 2 earned runs over 4 1/3 innings. His 87 pitches in that outing was a season-high he has matched just once.
  • Owns a 5.09 ERA at home vs. a 4.11 rate on the road. Has allowed 4 home runs over 4 starts and 17 2/3 IP at Miller Park.

Prediction

Brewers 3, Cubs 2

Moneyline (ML)

The BREWERS (+110) flip to slight underdogs following their 1-0 win Friday. The winning run came via DH Ryan Braun‘s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Cubs (-121) are favored with Hendricks on the hill. He dominated the Brewers the first time around this season, but Anderson held his own in his first matchup with Chicago.

Both teams are in the worse half of their pitching split, but Milwaukee fares slightly better against righties than Chicago does against lefties. Take the value with the BREWERS (+110) in what should be a low-scoring game much like Friday.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Brewers to win would return a profit of $11.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The safer play is to back the BREWERS +1.5 (-150) with one run of insurance in the event of a loss. Milwaukee is a league-worst 15-27 against the run line this season but improves to a much more respectable 9-8 as the underdog.

Over/Under (O/U)

I like the UNDER 8.5 (-110). Both starters are in the lesser half of their location split, but the two lineups are at a greater disadvantage. The two starting pitchers have already turned in a strong outing this season against their Saturday opposition and can follow up with another.

The Under is also 5-3 in this head-to-head series of division rivals this season.

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Chicago Cubs (26-19) and Milwaukee Brewers (19-22) kick off a three-game Miller Park series Friday night at 8:10 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Cubs-Brewers MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Cubs at Brewers: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Jon Lester vs. RHP Brandon Woodruff

Through eight starts, Lester is toting a would-be career-high 5.80 ERA. He has a 1.41 WHIP on the year and hasn’t earned a win since Aug. 11.

  • Last 5 starts: 9.26 ERA, 1.093 OPS allowed.
  • Fastball velocity (89.0 mph) and strikeouts (6.5 per nine) are at career lows.

Woodruff has posted a 3.91 ERA and 1.22 WHIP through 9 starts. The four-year veteran has a career ERA of 3.88.

  • Missing more bats (13.4% swinging strikes) than he did in his fine 2019 campaign (3.62 ERA in 22 starts).
  • Has a solid line against current Chicago bats (.682 OPS allowed, .104 ISO allowed) but has thus far logged two uninspiring starts against the Cubs in 2020 (9 1/3 IP, 4.82 ERA).

Moneyline (ML)

The Cubs (+150) are just 8-9 with a .721 OPS over their last 17 games. The Brewers (-167) have been going along with a subpar offense all season, save for a 19-run outburst against the Detroit Tigers in their last game.

Milwaukee has the better and more rested bullpen and much the better starter in this one. The price on BREWERS (-167) is tremendous. (Best of the week, perhaps.)

New to sports betting? A winning $100 bet on the Brewers returns a profit of $60.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

This contest has a lean on a double-digit total and an acceptable price on Milwaukee winning by a pair. Recent Milwaukee wins and Chicago losses most definitely fall into this play as well. Take the BREWERS -1.5 (+115).

Over/Under (O/U)

The lean here is on the upside of the OVER 9 (-110). Of late, the left arm of Lester alone gets you more than halfway there.
