Crystal Dynamics is working on the next Tomb Raider

Lara Croft’s adventures will continue on Unreal Engine 5.

The next Tomb Raider game is in active development at Crystal Dynamics.

During the State of Unreal 2022 broadcast on Monday, Crystal Dynamics announced that another installment in the classic adventure series is in the works. All we know about the game thus far is it’ll utilize Epic’s mighty-impressive Unreal Engine 5. So you can bet that it’ll be a beautiful game.

Not since 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider has there been a mainline series entry. Crystal Dynamics helmed the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy that so many fans are particularly fond of, then went on to work on Marvel’s Avengers

Watch the (very short) Tomb Raider announcement for yourself below.

Here’s what Spider-Man looks like in ‘Marvel’s Avengers’

Pictures of Spider-Man, you say? We’ve got them.

We finally know what Spider-Man will look like in Marvel’s Avengers.

Spider-Man: With Great Power  DLC is adding the web-head to Marvel’s Avengers — though he’s exclusive to PlayStation consoles. That exclusivity deal led to a lot of speculation that this incarnation of the wall-crawler would be the same one seen in Marvel’s Spider-Man  by Insomniac Games. Well, a new piece of promotional artwork for the DLC came out, and it looks like this will be an original depiction of the character. Not

Check out what the web-slinger looks like in the Spider-Man: With Great Power DLC for yourself below.

Square Enix president says ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ is disappointing

We’re with you on this one, Mr. Matsuda.

Yosuke Matsuda, the president and representative director of Square Enix, isn’t happy with how Marvel’s Avengers turned out.

In  Square Enix’s 2021 annual report, Matsuda claims that the title was an ambitious challenge, especially regarding implementing its GaaS (Games as a Service) model. He mentions overcoming development hurdles like the transition to work-from-home due to the pandemic, but it wasn’t enough to turn Marvel’s Avengers  into a success.

“While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service-oriented,” Matsuda said. “How we go about creating new experiences by incorporating this trend into our game design is a key question that we will need to answer going forward.”

Marvel’s Avengers  is practically an industry-wide punching bag by this point, and Square Enix knows it. Coming to  Xbox Game Pass last month  was an opportunity for the game to find a new audience, though  many subscribers were vocal about technical issues. Then controversy struck when paid boosts came to the in-game shop, only to be removed a month laterMarvel’s Avengers can’t catch a break, it seems.

Firaxis Games is working on its spin on spandex-clad heroes with Marvel’s Midnight Suns, though  it got hit with a delay on Wednesday. Not a good day to be a Marvel fan, that’s for sure.

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ is offering paid boosts despite its developers saying that wouldn’t happen

Paid ‘consumables’ give a pay-to-win advantage to those willing to hand over the cash.

Yup, there’s a fresh batch of game-altering microtransactions in  Marvel’s Avengers that allow players to gather resources and gain experience points faster, VGC  reported Friday. Giving players that shell out real money advantages over those that don’t.

These ‘consumables’ were not in Marvel’s Avengers before its  release on Xbox Games Pass last week. While boosts like these are common in live-service titles like this, fans are pretty upset since developer Crystal Dynamics said years ago there wouldn’t be any gameplay altering microtransactions in Marvel’s Avengers.

“The idea, from the beginning, is that we want you to be able to customize your hero; how they look, how they play, the gear they have and how they use it,” Scott Amos, studio head at Crystal Dynamics, said via GamesIndustry.biz in 2019. “Your Black Widow could be different to my Black Widow — just a little, maybe a lot depending on what you favor and how you unlock things. In terms of how we monetize, we’ll have cosmetics. No gameplay paywalls.”

So yeah, these new consumables go against Amos’ comments. Not the best look, especially as Marvel’s Avengers is already facing  issues since coming to Xbox Games Pass. However, Crystal Dynamics might double back on the consumables idea if that old interview is any indication.

“We make this for the fans,” Amos said. “At the end of the day, we will listen to them and get feedback from them, and we’ll adjust everything to serve that need.”

Guess we’ll see how it goes.
