Creighton has advanced to the final of the Big East bracket after its defense stymied top-seeded Providence in a 85-58 win and fifth-seeded Marquette in a 74-63 triumph. CU held opposing shooters to a mere 35% mark from the field over the two victories — the Bluejays’ eighth and ninth in their last 11 games.

Villanova — the No. 8 team in the nation — split a pair of regular-season blowout games with Creighton. The Wildcats eked by seventh-seeded St. John’s and third-seeded Connecticut to get to Saturday’s action at MSG. ‘Nova won those two games by a combined 4 points.

Creighton filed a flew clunkers in a mid-winter slump, but the Bluejays have been sharp of late. CU is a young team perhaps ready to once again fire at top-25 levels like it did for many weeks from 2013-21.

The ‘Jays can be loose with the basketball, and the Wildcats figure to have the edge on boards in this match-up. However, Creighton’s defense gives the Bluejays a puncher’s chance in this game, and CU needs the tourney crown to advance to the big dance while ‘Nova can afford bowing out of the Big East bracket a day early.

Against the spread

Bluejays are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games as underdogs. Villanova covered a 2.5-point spread in its win over Connecticut but has not won back-to-back games ATS since mid-January.

  2. The Bluejays were also tripped up last time out, falling 77-69 at Xavier as 4-point favorites. While they lost that one, they’re still 4-1 SU (2-3 ATS) across their past five games on the road. Creighton is just 2-6 ATS in its past eight games on the road, including 1-4 ATS in the past five on the road against teams with a winning home record.
  3. Villanova is a good offensive club, going for 77.2 points per game to rank 56th in the country. The Wildcats are also a good free-throw shooting team at 78.2% to rank 15th in the country. Defensively, the Wildcats have struggled against 3-pointers, allowing opponents to hit 35.9%, good for just 295th overall in the nation.

VILLANOVA (-225) is over my usual money line limit of -180, but the Wildcats are a solid bet on their home floor. The Wildcats haven’t lost in eight games at home, and they will have revenge on their minds after losing at Creighton Feb. 13.

Against the spread (ATS)

VILLANOVA -5.5 (-105) is a good bet on its home floor, especially since Creighton has struggled so much on the road, at least against the number.

You’ll be betting against some serious trends, as the road team has cashed in four of the past five games in this series, with the underdog going 6-0 ATS.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 146.5 (-110) is the best play on the board. Villanova has been crushing Overs lately, going 6-1 in its past seven at home, and 9-4 in its previous 13 games overall.

Creighton has rolled up 78.6 PPG on offense, ranking 39th in the nation, so they can hang with anyone. They will make you pull your hair out with their struggles at the free-throw line, as they hit just 65.7% of free throws, but we should see the Over inch across the line regardless.
