Florida football recruiting rises in rankings after recent blue-chip commitment

The Gators got a boost in 247Sports’ recruiting rankings with their recent commitment from Sharif Denson.

Florida football got some good news on the recruiting front recently when 247Sports gave the Gators a 10-spot bump in their rankings for the 2023 class after four-star cornerback [autotag]Sharif Denson[/autotag] committed to the program on Monday. While still sitting outside the top 25, UF moved up from No. 38 to No. 28 nationally in the prestigious publication’s rankings.

The boost comes on the heels of some disappointment for the Orange and Blue as highly-sought quarterback [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] picked the Miami Hurricanes while four-star offensive lineman [autotag]Roderick Kearney[/autotag] chose the Florida State Seminoles as their collegiate destinations.

The 5-foot-11.5-inch, 170-pound defensive back is a legacy at Florida through his parents, both of whom competed on the track team during their time at the university, which likely made a difference in his decision.

Denson is Florida’s ninth commitment in the class of 2023, the eighth of whom coming from within a 350-mile radius of campus — on par with Billy Napier’s desire to dominate the hotbeds of talent that reside nearby. Out of Gainesville, there is four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Gavin Hill[/autotag] and three-star wide receiver [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag], while four-star edge rusher [autotag]Isaiah Nixon[/autotag] (St. Petersburg), four-star offensive lineman [autotag]Knijeah Harris[/autotag] (Bradenton), three-star offensive lineman [autotag]Bryce Lovett[/autotag] (Rockledge), three-star wide receiver [autotag]Tyree Patterson[/autotag] (Eustis) and three-star offensive lineman [autotag]Tommy Kinsler[/autotag] (Ocala) round out the rest of the eight.

Four-star athlete [autotag]Aaron Gates[/autotag] is the ninth recruit, hailing from Sharpsburg, Georgia, and represents the only other projected defensive back in the class so far, though Florida is still going after top-ranked cornerback [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag].

Gators land commitment from local 4-star defensive lineman

Four-star defensive lineman Gavin Hill is the eighth recruit in the class of 2023 to commit to the Gators.

The Florida Gators picked up another commitment from the class of 2023 on Saturday night. Four-star F.W. Bucholz (Gainesville) defensive lineman [autotag]Gavin Hill[/autotag] made the announcement on Twitter after teasing a decision earlier in the day.

Hill’s decision comes at a critical time for Billy Napier‘s staff. The first-year head coach recently penned an open letter to the fanbase following some unrest caused by recruiting woes. Landing a local four-star should restore some confidence in the process, and the Gators needed to make some moves on the defensive line.

Ranked No. 259 overall on the 247Sports composite, Hill is the second-highest ranked recruit currently committed to Florida. [autotag]Isaiah Nixon[/autotag], a four-star edge rusher who recently flipped from UCF, is the only player ahead of him.

The announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise after Hill left a camp at Florida with an offer and quickly returned for an unofficial visit. That was all that was needed to get a verbal commitment.

Hill will join his Bucholz teammate, receiver [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag], at Florida. The older Whittemore, Trent, is currently a Gator as well, so there’s a bit of a pipeline being established with the school. Napier’s been big on keeping in-state talent in Florida, and he’s doing a good job of locking down the immediate area.

Florida’s class ranking moved up to No. 34 from No. 39 on the 247Sports recruiting list.

Florida football gets commitment from this coveted OL

Add another name to the list of 2023 football commits.

Florida football added another commitment to its 2023 recruiting class on Sunday when an in-state target from just down the road pledged to join the Orange and Blue. Three-star offensive lineman [autotag]Tommy Kinsler[/autotag] out of Ocala Trinity Catholic, fresh off an official visit to the Swamp made up his mind with little hesitation.

“I got to talk to the coaches, see how they work, see how their personality is and got to spend time with the players and got to know how they are,” he told Swamp247. “I had a great time. My family had a great time, too.”

“It got to open my mind and see if I could come here and get developed more,” he told AllGators. “It did open my mind because I committed today.” Kinsler also offered Swamp247, “Coach Sale and coach Stapleton seem like the guys to do it, to get me prepared for the next level.”

The 6-foot-6-inch, 330-pound behemoth is no stranger to Gainesville thanks in large part to his proximity in nearby Ocala and he had already made a couple of unofficial visits ahead of his recent stop. He recently made a trip to see the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and still has an official visit set with the Miami Hurricanes on June 24.

Kinsler is Florida’s sixth commitment in the 2023 recruiting cycle, joining four-star athlete [autotag]Aaron Gates[/autotag], four-star offensive lineman [autotag]Knijeah Harris[/autotag], three-star athlete [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag], three-star offensive lineman [autotag]Bryce Lovett[/autotag] and three-star wide receiver [autotag]Tyree Patterson[/autotag].

The in-state lineman is currently ranked No. 964 overall and No. 85 nationally at his position according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 896 and 61, respectively. Kinsler had held a solitary crystal ball projection from 247Sports and an 89.9% chance of landing him on On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Gators crack top 25 in recruiting class rankings, per ESPN

The Gators have finally cracked ESPN’s top-25 recruiting rankings.

In a recent re-rank of the recruiting classes across college football, ESPN gave the 23rd spot to [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s Florida Gators. Previously unranked, UF was able to claim a spot thanks to the recent additions of three notable prospects to the class.

The recruits currently committed to attending Florida are athlete [autotag]Aaron Gates[/autotag], offensive guard [autotag]Knijeah Harris[/autotag], wide receiver [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag], wide receiver [autotag]Tyree Patterson,[/autotag] and offensive tackle [autotag]Bryce Lovett[/autotag].

Harris is the top player in the group currently committed to the Gators in ESPN’s rankings. They list him as a four-star, ranked as the 155th player in the class. “Harris is a nice addition to the trenches, as he has been a multiyear starter at IMG Academy and should come in ready to compete for playing time,” wrote the ESPN recruiting experts.

Many Gators fans may have expected better results on the recruiting trail a full six months into the Napier era, especially considering he hired so many well-known recruiting powerhouses into his staff. That being the case, seeing Florida just now creep into the top 25 schools on the ESPN list could be disheartening.

However, I’d admonish caution before getting too close to the ledge. A few of the players Florida wanted have spurned them, but most of their top targets are yet to commit anywhere. The Gators’ name is constantly being included in the conversation for notable prospects and literally every week they are included in four-star players’ top lists.

A look at the 10 greatest Gators who hailed from Gainesville

Here are the greatest Gators gridiron warriors who hailed from Gainesville.

In college towns across America, the dream for a lot of young men is to play for the hometown school. Other high school kids want to get away from home to spread their wings (some too close to the sun).

Certainly at Florida, there is a rich history of Gainesville Gators, players who were in high school in the city and matriculated a few miles down the road to go to college.

With the recent commitment of [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag], a Buchholz product, to Florida, we started thinking about the players who grew up in Gainesville playing football for the Gators.

Creed’s brother Trent is expected to be a big part of the 2022 Florida football season if he can stay away from injuries and there is nothing like being on a college football team with your brother.

Sometimes, getting the local kid to commit is easy. Sometimes, it takes a lot of effort. Still other times, you don’t know what is right down the road until it slaps you in the face.

Here is one man’s opinion on the 10 best from Gainesville to play for the Gators.

Florida soars up 247Sports team recruiting rankings after landing two pledges

Florida soared up the 247Sports team recruiting rankings after landing two commits from four-stars Knijeah Harris and Creed Whittemore.

Florida football and head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] had quite a great Saturday. They landed two commits from four-star offensive tackle [autotag]Knijeah Harris[/autotag] and four-star athlete [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag], the younger brother of current receiver [autotag]Trent Whittemore[/autotag]. UF entered Saturday at No. 53 in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings but emerged at No. 34 after the commitments.

They currently hold four verbal commitments in their 2023 recruiting class from Harris, Whittemore as well as four-star athlete [autotag]Aaron Gates[/autotag] and three-star wide receiver [autotag]Tyree Patterson[/autotag]. Florida currently sits just behind the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Gators fans shouldn’t panic at their team ranking just yet because it is still just May and realize their team only has four pledges. Looking at all the teams ahead of Florida, the Crimson Tide is the only program to hold fewer commits with three while LSU, Clemson and Oklahoma have four, too.

If fans want to make judgments about the Gators’ class, they should look at the average recruits’ ranking, which sits at 88.82. That number currently ranks 16th best out of all the programs ahead of them.

Gators earn commitment from this 4-star legacy wide receiver

Four-star athlete Creed Whittemore committed to Florida on Saturday. Yes, he is the little brother of current wide receiver Trent Whittemore.

Florida earned a commitment from current wide receiver Trent Whittemore’s little brother, [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag], on Saturday. He chose the Gators over others like UCF, West Virginia and Wake Forest on Saturday during his commitment ceremony at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Florida.

Creed is ranked as a three-star athlete in the 247Sports composite rankings but as a four-star in the 247Sports independent rankings. In the one where he is more highly ranked, Creed is considered the 223rd overall prospect and the 20th best player at his position.

The Gators coaching staff is recruiting Creed as a wide receiver even though he is listed as an athlete. For the Bobcats, however, he plays quarterback.

He is the second prospect to commit to Florida on Saturday along with four-star interior offensive lineman [autotag]Knijeah Harris[/autotag]. They join the Gators 2023 recruiting class along with four-star athlete [autotag]Aaron Gates[/autotag] and three-star wide receiver [autotag]Tyree Patterson[/autotag].

Florida is most likely looking to sign more wide receivers this cycle. The current coaching staff wants to add more playmakers after the previous staff struggled to do so.

Florida football staff hits the road to evaluate recruiting targets

UF’s coaching staff is back on the road evaluating prospects as spring football kicks off in Florida.

Spring football has begun in the state of Florida and that means various Gators coaches are back on the road to see some of the top recruits on UF’s board in action.

[autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has done well to get several of the state’s top prospects on campus over the spring, and now he gets another chance to have his people evaluate those players. Napier has stressed the importance of his evaluation process from day one as the Gators’ head coach. Diagnosing the problem and finding the right tools to fix it is what he does best and it’s through a meticulous process.

Spring practices gave Napier and Co. a chance to see exactly what they had to work with, and it’s no secret that Florida lacks depth in various spots on the depth chart. Some of that will be addressed in the transfer portal but the long-term issues will need strong and focused recruiting to repair.

Here’s where some of the Florida football coaches are this Monday, according to 247Sports.

4-star athlete with Clemson interest updates recruitment ahead of important spring

Prior to this week’s edition of the Insider Report, The Clemson Insider spoke with Creed Whittemore, an athlete out of F.W. Bucholz (Gainesville, Fla.), who was recently named a four-star prospect by 247Sports.

Whittemore has been keeping in contact with Clemson ahead of the start of his high school’s spring practice, as wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham will make his way down to the Sunshine State at some point in the near future to watch Whittemore — a high school quarterback — run routes.

“It’s still been kind of the same thing,” Whittemore said regarding what he’s been hearing from Clemson lately. “Just been communicating with Coach Grisham and they’ll be here for spring (practice), which is in about a week, so just getting ready for that.”

How has his relationship developed with Grisham since they first got in contact?

“I think, obviously, he’s a man of his word,” he said of Grisham. “He’s not gonna (steer) you wrong or lead you down the wrong path, which I respect for sure as a college coach because it is sort of a business for them. That’s their job. You can definitely respect the way he handles recruiting and just how hard it is to be straight up with kids and I think he does a great job of that.”

Grisham isn’t the only coach stopping by Bucholz to watch Whittemore run routes. The University of Alabama will be in attendance, as well as the schools have offered Whittemore. Additionally, Stanford offensive coordinator, Tavita Pritchard, will be there this coming Thursday.

Every time we speak with Whittemore, he seems to add another offer to his collection. Since visiting for Clemson’s second junior day of the year on March 5, he’s picked up offers from Georgia Tech, Miami, Michigan, Penn State and was re-offered by the new coaching staff at the University of Florida.

“You can’t lie, it’s always a blessing,” Whittemore said, “and just a little encouragement when you get an offer. It’s just a way to keep encouraging yourself.”

As far as slots go, Clemson has already received a commitment from Edison (Miami, Fla.) four-star wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph, who verbally pledged to the Tigers back in September 2021. While the Tigers plan on taking three receivers in the 2023 recruiting class, Joseph’s commitment won’t inhibit the potential addition of Whittemore.

Whittemore believes he’s a guy that can play every single receiver position at a high level at the next level.

In the event that an offer from Clemson comes Whittemore’s way, we made sure to ask him about the possibility of playing with Briarwood Christain (Alabama) four-star Christopher Vizzina, who committed to Clemson on April 12.

“I think every receiver obviously wants to play with a really good quarterback because you can’t do much without the ball getting thrown to you,” he said regarding the prospect of playing with Vizzina. “That’s exciting, obviously, for them. I know they’re pumped. If I were to get an offer, I think it would make it that much more intriguing to be a part of it just because of the player he is and the person as well.”

The Insider Report: Latest on a priority target approaching decision, more recruiting updates

It’s time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend.

The latest on David Ojiegebe

The Clemson Insider spoke with St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.) four-star edge rusher David Ojiegbe over the phone Monday, shortly after he announced via social media that he will be making his commitment next Wednesday, April 27.

Ojiegbe indicated that everything’s going pretty well as he gets close to making his decision. He told us he’s currently focused on schools like Clemson, Miami, North Carolina, N.C. State, Michigan, Maryland and LSU.

There was a lot of buzz coming out of the Orange & White Spring Game regarding Ojiegebe and from what we gathered and reported in last week’s edition of the Insider Report, Ojiegbe’s latest visit to Clemson went very well, and Ojiegbe himself told us that he enjoyed his time while on campus for the game.

“The visit was pretty good,” Ojiegbe said. “I got to talk with Coach Dabo a little bit more and talk with him on a personal level. He was just telling me, just know that my offer is committable and just emphasizing how big of a role I’d play, and just how they want me. It was a good conversation with him and Coach Lemanski (Hall).”

There’s a plan in place for Ojiegbe to play early at Clemson, which will definitely be a factor in his decision come next Wednesday. When it comes time for Ojiegbe to make his decision, what are going to be some of the more important factors he’s looking for?

“Just being developed as a player and as a man,” Ojiegbe said, “and just what can they do for me after football? Because football’s gonna be over (for me) soon. It’s not that long, the average span of an NFL player or a college football player. I just want to make sure that I’ll be straight after football and have a platform to make money and become a better man, and actually, just have a good major too, so I can sustain myself for the rest of my life.”

An update on Creed Whittemore

Prior to this week’s edition of the Insider Report, TCI spoke with Creed Whittemore, an athlete out of F.W.

“He’s not gonna right you wrong or lead you down the wrong path, which I respect for sure as a college coach because it is sort of a business for them. That’s their job. You can definitely respect the way he handles recruiting and just how hard it is to be straight up with kids and I think he does a great job of that.”

Grisham isn’t the only coach stopping by Bucholz to watch Whittemore run routes. Stanford’s offensive coordinator, Tavita Pritchard, will be there on Thursday, as well as all the schools that have offered Whittemore and the University of Alabama.

Big-time in-state OL updates recruitment, interest from Clemson

Dorman High School (Roebuck, S.C.)’s D.J. Geth – a 6-foot-6, 310-pound junior in the 2023 class – was on Clemson’s campus for an unofficial visit on April 4.

While he was originally supposed to make it back for Clemson’s Orange & White Spring Game five days later, that never was able to materialize. In any event, Geth was able to recap his time at Clemson in an interview with TCI.

“My visit to Clemson was good,” Geth said. “I went to the spring practice and saw how intense and organized their practice is.”

Geth is teammates at Dorman with fellow class of 2023 offensive lineman Markee Anderson, who received an offer from Clemson last September, and the two are good friends.

Though the Tigers haven’t yet offered Geth, he is garnering interest from Thomas Austin and has been communicating with Clemson’s new offensive line coach.

Geth, who plays tackle at Dorman, intrigues Austin and the Tigers with his ability to man multiple positions on the O-line and his potential as a center.

What was Geth able to hear from the coaching staff when he was back on campus?

“I heard that they really like what they see from me and that they are looking forward to continuing this process with me,” he said.

In Geth’s eyes, his connection and his relationship with Clemson almost certainly became stronger thanks to this month’s visit. Geth, who competed at the Dabo Swinney Camp last summer, also visited Clemson for the UConn game last November.

He’s the son of Ed Geth, who played basketball at North Carolina and was a member of the Tar Heels’ 1993 national championship team.
