Cowboys superstar LB unlikely to play vs. 49ers in Week 8

Micah Parsons is likely out for Week 8 per Adam Schefter.

It appears the banged up San Francisco 49ers are going to avoid facing Dallas Cowboys superstar edge rusher Micah Parsons when the two teams face off Sunday night.

Parsons was a non-participant Wednesday and Thursday for the Cowboys, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the three-time All-Pro is unlikely to recover from his ankle injury in time to play Sunday night.

This is a significant deal for a 49ers offensive line that has struggled at times this season. It’s also helpful for quarterback Brock Purdy who has generated some pressures of his own by holding onto the football too long.

Without Parsons, Dallas may have to resort to more blitzing to generate pass rush which is something Purdy and the 49ers’ offense should be able to take advantage of.

Parsons had 21 pressures and only 1.0 sacks in four games before his injury. He had 40.5 in the three seasons prior to this one, including a career-high 14.0 last season.

Without Parsons and edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence, who is on IR with a foot injury, the Cowboys have relied on a rotating cast of pass rushers to provide pressure.

Interior lineman Osa Odighizuwa has 17 pressures to lead the non-Parsons and Lawrence Cowboys. Odighizuwa, edge rusher Chauncey Golston and linebacker Eric Kendricks all have two sacks each per Pro Football Focus.

With the 49ers dealing with a host of their own injuries on offense, they’ll take the reprieve of missing Dallas’s top edge rushers in Week 8.

Tyler Smith headlines Monday injury concerns for Cowboys

The war of attrition has begun as the Dallas Cowboys are dealing with multiple injuries of varying severity as they kick off Gians’ work. | From @ArmyChiefW3

Dallas got their week of preparation for the season opener underway on Monday, but not everything went according to plan. Cowboys starting left guard Tyler Smith walked off the practice field and was followed by head athletic trainer Joe Maurer a few moments later.

As a rookie, Smith started every game for the Cowboys last season including their two playoff games. That streak may now be in jeopardy. In what is being reported as a minor hamstring injury, his availability should become clearer once the Cowboys release their first injury report later this week.

Should Smith not be ready for week one in New York, Chuma Edoga would be the likely replacement. Rookies T.J. Bass or Asim Richards could also be in line for their first career start. Smith wasn’t the only key player requiring an injury update, as several players who have been missing practice time achieved various levels of readiness as the work week commenced.

Final Injury Report: Jones expects several key Cowboys vs Browns

Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs are expected to play Sunday vs the Cleveland Browns after limited practice time this week.

The Dallas Cowboys have been bombarded with injuries so far in the first three weeks of the 2020 NFL season. Sean Lee, Leighton Vander Esch, La’el Collins, Anthony Brown, and Chidobe Awuzie are all currently on injured reserve. However, with a crucial contest against the Cleveland Browns on the horizon, the first of a three-game homestand, the Cowboys got some good injury news via team owner Jerry Jones. He told 105.3 The Fan on Friday morning that he expects Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Trevon Diggs to play this Sunday, saying “It’s certainly looking like we’ll have them available.”

The Browns themselves have several players out this week. Adrian Clayborn, who once tormented the Cowboys with six sacks in 2017, is out with a hip injury. Joining him are linebacker Tae Davis and cornerback Greedy Williams. Running back Kareem Hunt, guard Joe Bitonio, linebacker Jacob Phillips, defensive end Olivier Vernon, and cornerback Denzel Ward are all questionable for Sunday after limited practice participation on Friday. Center Nick Harris is also questionable but didn’t practice.

Clayborn took advantage of the Cowboys’ lack of Smith in a game with Atlanta, causing havoc in the backfield and notching six of the Falcons’ eight sacks of Prescott. The Cowboys QB was seeing pass-rushing ghosts for several weeks after that game. Now, Clayborn will miss the first chance the two would have to tango again, and Smith seems likely to be available.

It was revealed Smith was suffering from neck stingers after an injury in practice on September 17. He finally returned to practice in a limited fashion on Thursday. Smith has missed at least three games in each of the previous four seasons. With two games already missed in 2020, the Cowboys are hopeful that him being on the injury report for this season has come to an end.

Lawrence has been dealing with a knee issue since last week where he missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday, which he repeated this week as well. Nonetheless, the former All-Pro will be on the field searching for his first sack of the season on Sunday. Lawrence hasn’t recorded a full sack since Week 9 of last season and only has a half-sack since, which occurred in Week 13.

Diggs has been battling knee and shoulder injuries this week and has been limited in practice. However, he’ll make the fourth consecutive start of his rookie campaign. He’s had his fair share of rookie struggles, which is expected, but he competes on every down, as was seen with his heads play to prevent a touchdown by DK Metcalf of the Seattle Seahawks last week.

Diggs has been on the field for all of the Cowboys 224 defensive snaps this season.

This is the kind of good news the Cowboys want to hear as they look to even their record at 2-2 and stay atop the NFC East.

Trevon Diggs fully practices, Tyron, DeMarcus still rehabbing

Trevon Diggs suffered a shoulder injury last Sunday vs the Atlanta Falcons but is expected to start vs the Seattle Seahawks. Tyron Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence are doing rehab work today.

The Dallas Cowboys have been hit with a plethora of injuries already in 2020. In particular, the secondary and offensive line units are holding on by a thread. Cornerback Anthony Brown is currently on injured reserve with a rib injury and Chidobe Awuzie will miss multiple weeks with a hamstring issue. Starting right tackle La’el Collins is on injured reserve with a hip injury and backup tackle Cam Erving is out with an MCL sprain.

The Cowboys seem likely to have a key member of the secondary this Sunday though as rookie Trevon Diggs, who suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 vs the Atlanta Falcons and missed practice on Wednesday, is expected to start vs the Seattle Seahawks according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. He’ll do some rehab work before working his way into team drills later.

Update: Diggs was a full participant.

Veteran left tackle Tyron Smith is currently dealing with neck stingers and will do rehab work at practice today. He missed last week’s game vs the Seahawks, however, team owner Jerry Jones is optimistic about his chances this week.

“He didn’t play last week in part because we made preparations for the future,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday. “It wasn’t impossible to have him out there last week had we done a couple of things differently, but by design, we didn’t do it that way. We wanted to look to the long term, or the longer-term being the next games, the ones we’re getting ready to play. So, I feel as good as you can feel. I don’t know and nobody knows right now until we get out there and see how he’s operating during the week here at practice. But for the longer term, I feel good about it.”

DeMarcus Lawrence, who missed Wednesday’s practice due to the birth of his child, will also be rehabbing a knee ailment. He’ll be eased back into team drills later in practice.

The Cowboys definitely hope all three of these guys are available with such a tough opponent like the Seahawks this week as they look to avoid a 1-2 start to the 2020 season.

In recent years the Cowboys, like all NFL teams, have had their fair share of players who search for themselves on social media, or perhaps have instigating followers who look to tag them whenever they are mentioned. His point is a solid one, that he’s just rounding into shape and that the pandemic is the reason he and many are starting slowly. How that means the assessment of his early play is wrong though is up for debate.
