Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov point of interest: Shifty strikers

The main event in Abu Dhabi features a bantamweight showdown between two fighters who aren’t afraid to switch their stances.

Despite listing himself as an orthodox stance fighter, Nurmagomedov is a competent operator from either side.

Preferring to fight from the outside, Nurmagomedov commands a plethora of kicks out of both stances. From prodding sidekicks to more powerful Thai kicks, Nurmagomedov is good about playing with the looks and levels of his attacks.

Once Nurmagomedov establishes a threat, the 28-year-old is smart about building off it by either going up high with a question mark kick or attaching sneaky counter-balancing punches to the end of his attacks.

Nevertheless, Nurmagomedov is not beyond being countered for his shifting sensibilities and will need to be on his best behavior opposite Sandhagen.

Coming up through the kickboxing ranks in the quiet martial arts hotbed of Colorado, Sandhagen has clearly studied and absorbed a lot in what has been a fun career to watch thus far.

Utilizing his long and lean frame like second nature, Sandhagen is a rangy kickboxer who appears comfortable poking and prodding his opposition with accurate jabs and leg kicks from either stance. Shifting or drop-stepping at a moment’s notice, the 32-year-old talent can piece together flowing, varied offense off of whatever building materials are offered up to him.

Whether Sandhagen is bringing back Jose Aldo’s patented “Dutchie” combination or launching jumping switch-knees that give me flashbacks to Liu Kang’s bicycle kick, he certainly knows how to keep things spicy. And when Sandhagen is feeling in stride, it’s not uncommon to see the good samaritan show a sadistic smile after punctuating his presence with deep hooks or uppercuts to the body.

However, despite the multi-leveled attacks, Sandhagen is not exactly impervious from a defensive standpoint and will have to respect the potential level-changing counters coming his way.

Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov breakdown: Potential grappling threats

Considering the arguable crux of Nurmagomedov’s game, no one should be shocked if the Russian fighter looks to take this party to the floor.

A world champion in combat sambo, Nurmagomedov is a well-rounded grappler who is dangerous from multiple positions.

Training with his brother under the tutelage of his uncle, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, from a young age, Nurmagomedov possesses a lot of the translateable wrestling and sambo tactics you’d like to see from said background.

Whether he’s hitting reactive shots at the drop of a dime or entering in on a clinch, Nurmagomedov is good about chaining his attacks until getting his desired result. From shuck-bys to the back to balance de-basing leg play, Sandhagen will have a lot to worry about this Saturday.

However, in the American’s defense, Sandhagen has, in his own words, become a bit of a wrestler himself.

After dropping a somewhat controversial decision to T.J. Dillashaw in the summer of 2021, Sandhagen started to smartly round out his game and incorporate more takedown looks into his offense.

Although Sandhagen hasn’t exactly gotten any finishes through his newfound appreciation for wrestling, you can argue that these looks help overload opposition and plant potential level-changing seeds that the Colorado native can capitalize on down the road.

Defensively, Sandhagen hasn’t had to show much of his chops since losing to Dillashaw, given the stylistic draw of his opponents. And though Sandhagen still surrendered takedowns in said sample sizes, the majority of those numbers come from caught kicks that played no real effect on the fight.

Even when taken down, Sandhagen can be a tricky customer to deal with.
Slippery inside the scramble, Sandhagen has shown that he is not one to settle for bad positions, displaying a stoic composure that – outside of his fight with Aljamain Sterling – has surely assisted him in adverse spots before. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt in his own right, Sandhagen is far from a slouch when it comes to fighting for positions in the grappling department.

Even when Sandhagen is taken down, he is quick to attack, whether he is throwing armbars off his back to going for triangles from an inverted guard. However, despite showing some savvy in tough spots, Sandhagen still will need to be careful when returning to his feet given his propensity to tripod up and expose his back (I warned about this in my breakdowns before his fights with Sterling and T.J. Dillashaw).

As Nurmagomedov has already shown in the octagon, the Dagestani fighter is incredibly systematic and effective when it comes to breaking down his opponents from rear mount and riding positions.

From wrist feeds to wrist rides, Nurmagomedov demonstrates all the hallmarks of his teammates who came before him in regard to wearing down and finishing opposition.

Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov odds

The oddsmakers and the public are siding with the Russian fighter, listing Nurmagomedov -333 and Sandhagen +250 via FanDuel.

Even though I don’t disagree with who is favored from a betting perspective, this fight could get even more interesting if these two are still tangling come the latter rounds.

Nurmagomedov appears to be a solid athlete with a strong motor attached to him, but we know that Sandhagen is a proven product when it comes to both his durability and staying power. Should he survive the early waves of offense from Nurmagomedov, then I’ll be curious to see how the Dagestani phenom swims in deep water.

That said, I ultimately believe that this is a stylistic matchup that bodes badly for Sandhagen.

Despite making marked improvements to his wrestling that he deserves credit for, Sandhagen still shows a strong propensity to show his back in scrambles – something that seems hardwired into his game at this point.

Although I’m curious to see what the presence of Sandhagen’s newfound coach, Trevor Wittman, will bring to the table, I’m not sure it will counteract the grappling dynamic between these two.

As a fan of Sandhagen’s, I definitely wouldn’t mind being wrong on this one. But as an analyst who is just trying to go off of what I see, I can’t help but side with Nurmagomedov to find a submission by the end of Round 3.

Prediction: Nurmagomedov inside the distance

Cory Sandhagen finds it ‘weird’ that people are counting him out vs. Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC on ABC 7

Cory Sandhagen is motivated to prove the doubters wrong at UFC on ABC 7.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] is motivated to prove his doubters wrong at UFC on ABC 7.

According to Bet MGM, Sandhagen (17-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) is a +240 underdog against [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag] (17-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in Saturday’s headliner (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) at Etihad Arena.

Considering Nurmagomedov is far less experienced, former interim title challenger Sandhagen can’t understand why he has so many naysayers.

“Umar is a unique fighter,” Sandhagen told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at UFC on ABC 7 media day. “Stylistically, he’s a really tough fight. I had to work in a lot of overtime hours in order to make sure I was prepared for this fight. But the rankings, him coming up, the odds, the bettors, I couldn’t honestly give a sh*t less.

“I’m focused on what I’m going to do Saturday, and that’s executing underneath the lights, and I can’t wait for that peace because it’s weird that people are counting me out for this one, but I just can’t wait to prove all those people wrong.”

Outside of his quick submission loss to Aljamain Sterling in June 2020, Sandhagen said his takedown defense hasn’t been properly tested.

“No one’s seen me defensively wrestle ever almost except the situation with Sterling,” Sandhagen said. “That’s what we’ll call that loss, a situation. The situation with Sterling where – and that was what, four years ago? I was two years into my career. I’m six, seven years into my career now and still no one’s really seen it.

“So, just another element that I get to show to people, and man, I’m excited for this one just to show how great I am because Umar is going to bring out the best in me, and he already has in this camp, and I’m pumped for it. I can’t wait to watch myself fight.”

Cory Sandhagen rooting for Sean O’Malley at Noche UFC: ‘We’ll give the fans what they’ve been asking for’

Cory Sandhagen calls a potential UFC matchup vs. Sean O’Malley the most asked-for fight right now.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] admits he’ll spiritually be in the corner of the bantamweight champion at UFC 306.

Should he defeat Umar Nurmagomedov after Saturday’s UFC on ABC 7 in Abu Dhabi, Sandhagen (17-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) thinks he’ll align himself nicely for a crack at title gold.

Sandhagen isn’t particularly interested in a backup role, but plans to attend and root hard for Sean O’Malley to defeat Merab Dvalishvili at Noche UFC, the Sept. 14 pay-per-view at Sphere in Las Vegas. His motivation for partiality is self-benefit, of course.

“Yeah, I’m definitely rooting for O’Malley,” Sandhagen told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. “That’s definitely the bigger fight. That’s a fight that people have been asking for forever. I think that me and him go into a cage and it’s just going to be fireworks. It’s going to be so technical and so skilled, super athletic. That’s what the fans want to see really, really bad. I’m going to get this win. O’Malley, get yourself a win, and then we’ll give the fans what they’ve been asking for, for years. I really think there’s no more exciting fight or no fight I feel like is being asked for more in the UFC than me and O’Malley. That’s what I hope happens.”

[lawrence-related id=2759092,2759143]

O’Malley is currently a slight underdog across all major online sports books, which surprises Sandhagen. Sandhagen relates to O’Malley in that they both are often criticized for a facet of their game they haven’t really shown much.

“I think O’Malley is in a little bit of the same position as me,” Sandhagen said. “We haven’t seen O’Malley fight a ton of wrestlers. There are a lot of unknowns there. You haven’t seen me fight a ton of wrestlers, so you don’t really know how good my defensive wrestling is. I think he is in a little bit of the same boat. Usually, when that’s the case, people choose wrestling. That’s been chosen time and time again, that wrestling is usually the king of combat sports. I think that they’re likely counting him out for that, but we haven’t really seen him do much wrestling. So, who knows? He could be as good as Jordan Burroughs or Kyle Dake or Vito Araujo, but I guess you don’t really know.”

Cory Sandhagen before UFC on ABC 7: Training with Trevor Wittman ‘far exceeded my expectations’

Cory Sandhagen will have a new addition in his corner when he meets Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC on ABC 7.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] has a new addition to his coaching staff heading into UFC on ABC 7.

Sandhagen (17-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) sought help from renowned coach Trevor Wittman ahead of Saturday’s main event (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) vs. [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag] (17-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) at Etihad Arena.

Wittman has been an integral part of the success of the likes of former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, former strawweight champion Rose Namajunas, and ex-interim champ Justin Gaethje.

“I’ve been with Trevor for about four months now,” Sandhagen told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. “Working with Trevor has been great. He’s super impressive. He really knows how to work with the athletes on the technical, strategic side of things. I haven’t met anyone better honestly. He far exceeded my expectations on what he was going to be, and that’s really cool because I didn’t really know.

“Although I have known Trevor for a really long time. I never worked this closely with him, and yeah, it’s really exciting. I really feel like me, Trevor, Ryan Hall, head coach Carrington Banks, they came up with the recipe for success in this one, and I just got to go out there and execute.”

Despite Nurmagomedov being ranked eight spots below him in the official UFC bantamweight rankings, he has Sandhagen’s full attention.

“This camp has been a handful,” Sandhagen said. “Fighting someone that’s this well rounded is a handful. So, it’s been everything. I really had to push myself really far in order to learn enough, understand things enough, and also the physical and mental preparation.

“You add in a really unique style of fighting with someone that’s really good at striking and really good at grappling, it makes you work really hard. So, I worked my ass off this camp.”

Michael Bisping credits Cory Sandhagen for ‘willing to risk it all’ vs. Umar Nurmagomedov

Michael Bisping praises Cory Sandhagen for risking his ranking vs. Umar Nurmagomedov.

[autotag]Michael Bisping[/autotag] praises [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] for risking his ranking vs. [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag].

Sandhagen (17-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) takes on Nurmagomedov (17-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in the UFC on ABC 7 main event, which takes place Aug. 3 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

After Merab Dvalishvili gets his shot at UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley, Bisping expects the next No. 1 contender to emerge out of the winner between Sandhagen and Nurmagomedov.

“When it comes to contenders, Cory Sandhagen is right there,” Bisping told TNT Sports. “He has proven himself as the worthy guy, but he’s got to continue fighting to establish himself and get that shot. There is no one better, there’s no one hungrier, there’s no one more undeniable than Umar Nurmagomedov.

“Of course with that last name, with the resume, the undefeated record and the well-rounded skills. (He’s) Dagestani – we know the wrestling is there. But the man is a kickboxing phenom, as well. This is a tremendous fight. Of course, it’s the main event and whoever wins this, they have to be next for Sean O’Malley.”

Bisping thinks both Sandhagen and Nurmagomedov have a lot to lose, but it’s No. 2 ranked UFC bantamweight Sandhagen who’s fighting someone ranked eight spots below him.

“It’s kind of a bad situation for both of them,” Bisping said. “On paper, they’re both right there. Cory Sandhagen has earned a title fight. Remember that absolute washout he had of (Marlon) ‘Chito’ Vera? No disrespect to ‘Chito’ – he’s a good friend of mine – but Cory Sandhagen was just one step ahead. He’s a beautiful striker. He’s got great submissions. He’s got excellent wrestling. He’s very tall and long for the division.

“He’s beaten some great competition, and now he’s going to take on the undefeated Dagestani with a ton of hype and a great last name. So I kind of feel for Cory Sandhagen, but credit to this guy, kudos to him, because he’s willing to do it. He’s willing to risk it all to go up against Umar Nurmagomedov. It’s a sensational fight.”

T.J. Dillashaw thinks Cory Sandhagen will be UFC champ if he tops Umar Nurmagomedov

T.J. Dillashaw believes Cory Sandhagen would beat UFC bantamweight champ Sean O’Malley “all day,” but he’s got a big test first.

[autotag]T.J. Dillashaw[/autotag] thinks [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] could be UFC champion right now.

In order to get that opportunity, Sandhagen (17-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) has to get past [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag] (17-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in the UFC on ABC 7 main event, which takes place Aug. 3 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Former champion Dillashaw’s last octagon win came over Sandhagen when he edged him out in a back-and-forth battle in July 2021. While Dillashaw sees Sandhagen beating UFC bantamweight champion [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag], he thinks Nurmagomedov is a more stern test for him.

“It is a tough fight,” Dillashaw said on the “JAXXON PODCAST.” “I think Sandhagen should be champion right now. He’d beat O’Malley all day. I think that’s the toughest fight for O’Malley in the weight class. (If) Sandhagen gets through this fight, he’ll be world champion.

“This is a tough one for him to get through, though. I don’t like this fight for him. I hope that he gets through it. The guy he’s fighting is a dog. He’s a good wrestler – he can hold him down.”

Despite being the far more experienced fighter, Sandhagen opened up as a slight underdog against Nurmagomedov.

“It is very dangerous for both of them because Cory’s next up for a title fight (if) he wins this one,” Dillashaw said. “Umar’s trying to get to the top, and (now Sandhagen) needs to go back down a couple steps (for this fight). So I think it’s dangerous for both of them, but that’s what makes it a great f*cking fight.”
