AWA’s lineup as it switches from LMP3 to GTD with the new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will look quite familiar, as much of the driver lineup remains unchanged. Orey Fidani and Matt Bell return as co-drivers, and Anthony Mantella will partner with Nico Varrone, who joined Mantella for the endurance races this past season when not driving with Ben Keating and Nicky Catsburg on their way to winning the WEC GTE-Am championship for Corvette Racing.

The Ontario, Canada-based outfit led by Andrew Wojteczko has been a fixture in IMSA competition for several years, most recently in the WeatherTech Championship’s LMP3 class, where Mantella, Varrone, Wayne Boyd and Thomas Merrill won the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the team’s two cars finished third and fourth in the championship. The team announced earlier this year that it would make the switch to GTD and Corvette, the first customer team for the Z06 GT3.R in the GTD class.

Fidani has been with AWA since 2019 and has seen much success with the team. He will once again be accompanied by UK driver Bell, as the pairing reunite for a third consecutive season as teammates. Bell is a seasoned driver with experience in endurance championships around the world.

“Stepping up into the GTD class is both a very exciting and intense feeling,” said Fidani. “The competition at this level is world class, and features some of the best racing drivers in motorsports. All eyes will be on us, and I have full confidence in this team and this program. I’m thrilled to be working with Andrew Wojteczko and Matt Bell again. We’ve proven that this program has what it takes to fight for wins and I can’t wait to enter this next chapter with Corvette.”

“I’m really happy to be returning to AWA,” said Bell. “It’s been a fantastic experience to grow with this team and I can’t wait to return with them for 2024. To be competing with a Corvette is a dream come true, as I’ve loved these cars since I first began competing in IMSA in 2014. Chevrolet is an iconic motorsport manufacturer so to represent that name in the GTD ranks is a great opportunity for us all.”

Mantella will also be continuing his long-standing relationship with the team following a successful 2023 season that included a win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in addition to the Rolex victory.

“It’s an honor to be driving a Corvette, this is a unique and rare opportunity that I feel very privileged to be a part of,” he said. “Corvette’s worldwide customer program is a trusted network, and it was a very easy decision to make after having worked with Chevrolet in the past. The advanced engineering and high level of professionalism that they bring to the racing scene is unprecedented. I want to express my gratitude to Andrew Wojteczko and everyone at Chevy Motorsports and Corvette for this one of a kind opportunity.”

For Argentinian Varrone, it marks a continuation with not only AWA, but Corvette. Part of the trio that won the FIA World Endurance Championship GTE-Am title for Corvette Racing, their trio of race victories so far included the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“I’m very excited to be announced as a full season driver for AWA,” said Varrone. “It’s been a great first season together with some highlights including winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona, and I can’t wait to get my first laps under my belt in the Corvette Z06 GT3.R. I’m looking forward to this next season and I can’t wait to race for victories with Anthony Mantella. We’ve built an awesome friendship and both of us have the same desire to win. We have a busy year ahead of ourselves with new challenges but we like it that way!”

AWA will make their GTD debut with the Corvette Z06 GT3.R at the 2024 edition of the Rolex 24 next January.

Petit Le Mans to bring an end to 25 years of factory Corvette Racing

Twenty-five years of Corvette Racing history comes to an end when the checkered flag falls on this weekend’s Petit Le Mans, the season finale of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Having competed as an entity through several categories of GT racing and across several series, the sun will set on the program as Corvette transitions to customer racing with the advent of the Corvette Z06 GT3.R next season.

[lawrence-auto-related count=1 tag=5156]

For those who built the program that produced 127 victories worldwide, nine wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and 14 drivers and manufacturers titles, the record is one of remarkable achievement that laid the groundwork for what is to come.

“In my time with Corvette Racing, I watched the team evolve immensely,” said Oliver Gavin, who drove for Corvette Racing from 2002-20. “It really has been incredible to watch. The racing landscape is changing constantly with new teams and new manufacturers, but the constant has always been Corvette Racing. It’s such a strength of this program to have been flexible and smart enough to apply themselves in the best way to come away consistently with championships and race victories over the years. I’m immensely proud to be part of it all.”

Gavin, the winningest driver in Corvette history, is one of 24 different drivers to have won in a Corvette, including Johnny O’Connell, Jan Magnussen, Ron Fellows, Olivier Beretta, Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor, Tommy Milner, Nicky Catsburg, Ben Keating, Kelly Collins and Max Papis. Corvette lore is written in achievements such as the overall victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2001 or the 2017 victory at Sebring against some of the best GTLM competition ever assembled, or the first-and-second battle to the finish at Daytona in 2016.

“I’m proud of Corvette Racing’s achievements in the last 25 years,” declared Jim Campbell, Chevrolet’s U.S. vice president for Performance and Motorsports. “I was fortunate to be part of the team that launched the program at Daytona in January of 1999. In addition to its on-track accomplishments, I’m proud of the relationship that Corvette Racing has established with our production teams from design, engineering and propulsion to improve Corvettes for the showroom.

“Corvette owners and fans have supported Corvette Racing from the beginning. I recall hundreds of owners driving their Corvettes to Daytona for the 1999 Rolex 24 to support our launch. We appreciate their passion, knowledge and support at more than 280 races since.”

Corvette Racing has as much fan engagement as any team or manufacturer in the paddock with Corvette Corrals at IMSA races bringing in more than a thousand owners throughout the season. The cars in those corrals range from impeccably restored C1 Corvettes to modified C5s to brand-new C8s, and the last three generations of the car have benefitted greatly from the racing program.

“It’s difficult to imagine what the Corvette brand would look like without the Corvette Racing program,” said Corvette executive chief engineer Tadge Juechter. “For 25 years we have been working toward total integration of the race- and street-car teams. Endurance racing provides us with a treasure trove of information in any number of areas – aerodynamics, engine performance and chassis, to name a few.

“That kind of real-world data is highly valuable to production engineers and designers, and we have made great use of those lessons from the racetrack. It really improves our products, and resonates with our fanbase and Corvette owners.”

Those lessons will likely continue, as longtime partner Pratt Miller is building the Z06 GT3.R, and will run two cars in GTD PRO as Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports. It will be one of several Corvette racing teams worldwide, including AWA in IMSA GTD, TF Sport in WEC and and DXDT in GT World Challenge America.

Aside from Pratt Miller’s involvement, further continuity comes from the GTD PRO driver lineup of Garcia, Catsburg, Tommy Milner and Alexander Sims. Garcia will close out Corvette Racing’s current iteration on Saturday with Milner and Jordan Taylor, who moves back to his father’s team to drive one of the Acura ARX-06 GTP cars next season.

“It has meant a lot to my career with all I’ve achieved with Corvette Racing,” said Garcia. “There couldn’t be a better place to be. I’ve managed to win five championships, but the team has managed to win so many more. This is the best team in the sport at the end of the day, and I’m grateful I’ve been able to carry on.

“I’m super happy with Corvette Racing and they seem to be super happy with me. It’s been a perfect combinations for the last 15 or 16 years that I’ve been racing.”

Corvette making leap of faith in GTD with AWA

As GM’s plans for the Corvette Z06 GT3.R developed, the clear plan was for two cars in GTD PRO and two in GTD. The GTD PRO program will be handled by Pratt Miller; for its first customer Corvette racing program, though, the nod went to a team without any previous experience in GTD, and only a short history in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, AWA Racing. The team’s history and trajectory, which includes a 2023 Rolex 24 At Daytona victory in LMP3, indicated that it’s on the right path for success, according to Christie Bagne, Corvette Z06 GT3.R program manager.

“AWA comes in with a clear stated objective of growing and moving up through process,” Bagne said. “We’ve seen that happen already; they were successful in GT4, and then stepped into the WeatherTech Championship in LMP3. We’ve seen this team grow in terms of their results, we saw them very successful at Rolex this year, we’ve seen them with good consistency through the championship. We’ve seen the way they do brand representation and the way that they represent brands on social media. All of that has been growing — they’ve been showing they have the capability to be running in this class. They have a clear objective to grow and a clear plan to do that. So all of that was really appealing.”

At the same time that GM is taking a leap with AWA, AWA is taking a leap into a new category with the first GT3 Corvette that GM has produced, and the first GT3 car since the Cadillac ATS-V GT3 that raced as a factory program in World Challenge. Granted, Corvette Racing has a pretty fine record over the last 25 years, a fact not lost on AWA principal Andrew Wojteczko.

“I’d say it’s their long-time understanding of what’s required to build a reliable and competitive car,” Wojteczko said of what drove his decision. “Their focus is on being competitive and winning; I think that’s a great attitude, and something we want to be a part of.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1406]

AWA competed in IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge with a variety of manufacturers before moving to LMP3, tasting success along the way. But transitioning into GTD, Wojteczko recognizes that GM is putting a lot of faith in him to run a good program in what it considers its most important championship.

“It’s a huge milestone for myself for the team. And I’m just extremely grateful that the steps that we’ve taken caught the attention of Corvette, and they feel like we’re a worthy team to fulfill that role,” he said. “So, yeah, that’s a huge achievement. I’m very, very grateful for the opportunity.”

AWA ran a single Duqueine D08 in 2022, adding a second one at Petit Le Mans last year and running two cars this season. The No. 17 with Anthony Mantella and Wayne Boyd is currently second in the LMP3 points; the No. 13 duo of Orey Fidani and Matthew Bell is fourth. The No. 17 won the non-points Rolex 24 At Daytona with Mantella, Boyd, Nico Varrone and Thomas Merrill. And while Varrone is also part of Corvette Racing’s WEC program — along with Nicky Catsburg and Ben Keating — that has already clinched the WEC GTE-Am title and also won the class at Le Mans, that connection didn’t really play a part in getting the deal done. Instead, it was the quality of the team’s work.

“They take a really organized approach to it,” explained Bagne. “I was impressed by that. They come in and they have they have an org chart defined and they are looking at manageable milestones to be successful. So I would say the the vision that team has and the organization with which they approach executing that vision was really impressive and gave me confidence that they’ll be successful.”

The collaboration begins immediately. Bagne says Pratt Miller is testing the Z06 GT3.R at Road America this week after the race, and Wojteczko and AWA personnel will be on hand to observe as they embark on their two-car GTD program. The Corvette Z06 GT3.R has already undergone homologation testing in Europe, and the homologation is likely to be completed in October. AWA expects that its cars will be delivered in November.

The front-running AWA LMP3 team will turn its attention to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s GT Daytona class in 2024 and field a pair of brand-new Corvette Z06 GT3.Rs.

The Canadian outfit, class winners at January’s Rolex 24 At Daytona, will receive technical support as part of the program with the cars built by Michigan’s Pratt Miller Motorsports. Complementing the factory Corvette Racing Z06 GT3.R effort that will run in the GTD PRO category, AWA’s upcoming presence in GTD is an important one for the brand as it embraces the GT3 formula and widespread customer racing engagements.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1406]

“We are happy to welcome AWA to the Corvette Racing family,” said Christie Bagne, Corvette Z06 GT3.R Program Manager. “It was important for us to select a highly competitive and collaborative team to be our first representative in the WeatherTech Championship’s GTD class. AWA is a fantastic choice. The team has a proven capability of winning races in multiple sports car categories and series. Our goal is to help AWA compete for championships and race wins with the Z06 GT3.R in 2024 and beyond.”

AWA team owner Andrew Wojteczko echoed Bagne’s sentiments.

“I am honored to have the opportunity for AWA to represent Corvette in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship,” he said. “I have the utmost respect for the people involved and am looking forward to doing our part to help secure results for the Z06 GT3.R.”

Antonio Garcia posted the fastest lap of the second practice session for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Series Championship race from Lime Rock Park. Garcia jumped to the top of the leaderboard in the final minutes of the session with a time of 51.029s in the No. 3 Corvette C8.R.

The fastest times in the session came in the closing 10 minutes when the GT Daytona PRO cars rattled off qualifying simulations on a quiet track.

Jack Hawksworth in the No. 14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC-F GT3 was second quickest with a time of 51.155s, 0.126s behind Garcia’s time. If Garcia, or another driver, can match the Spaniard’s time, they will break the track record in qualifying later this evening.

Rounding out the top three was Patrick Pilet in the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3R with a time of 51.195s. The top time in GT Daytona was Frederik Schandorff in the No. 70 Inception Racing McLaren 720s GT3 Evo who clocked a 51.589s after a session-leading 61 laps in the hour.

UP NEXT: Qualifying is later this evening at 5:40pm ET. The race is tomorrow, Saturday, as opposed to the usual Sunday main event.

TF Sport is set to switch from being an Aston Martin to a Corvette customer team for the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship, competing with a pair of brand-new Z06 GT3.Rs in the forthcoming LMGT3 category as part of the GM brand’s new customer racing program.

The British team, owned and run by Tom Ferrier, will run two of the eight confirmed Z06 GT3.Rs that will compete in 2024 as part of the first phase of Corvette’s customer rollout. It is a move that has been in the works for many months behind the scenes.

“We are excited to welcome TF Sport to the Corvette Racing family,” said Christie Bagne, the Corvette Z06 GT3.R program manager. “Tom Ferrier and his organization showcase the elements we were looking for in a team to run our Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the FIA WEC– a first-class operation, strong collaboration and a history of success. We look forward to working with Tom and his team to make the Z06 GT3.R a success in the WEC and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2024 and beyond.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

TF Sport will benefit from a “bespoke level of parts distribution support for 2024″ as part of the GM brand’s increasing presence in Europe for its new customer GT3 program. GM has told RACER that the plan is to run its customer operation in Europe out of a new permanent location on the continent.

“To do a proper job in Europe we want to make sure we have a setup that will likely include some type of headquarters that we can run parts in and out of,” GM sports car racing program manager Laura Wontrop Klauser said.

Ferrier — who has guided his team to five British GT titles, international titles in GT3, GTE and LMP2, and a Le Mans class win in 2020 and 2022 — says he feels the time is right for the team to move on from competing with Aston Martin Racing.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to represent such an iconic brand on the world stage,” he said. “Corvette Racing has an immense history at Le Mans and we will be looking to continue that run of success.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Aston Martin Racing for the support and success we have had over the past six years and seven Le Mans but now I feel the time is right for a new challenge in the WEC.

“We still have a job to do in this year’s WEC, now lying second in the championship. and will give it our all to finish on a high.”

In addition to the confirmed two-car efforts for TF Sport and Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsport with the Z06 GT3.R, Corvette is set to reveal two further customer teams for 2024 shortly. The four remaining cars are expected to run with new customers in IMSA GTD and SRO America respectively.

With TF Sport making the switch to Corvette, Aston Martin’s LMGT3 plans are currently unknown. Currently, the Northwest AMR effort in the WEC GTE Am class (that runs alongside TF Sport’s pair of Vantages) is being operated by Heart of Racing, after Paul Dalla Lana stepped away from racing after Round 2 of the current season at Portimao.

RACER understands that an evo kit for the Vantage GT3 is currently being developed behind the scenes and could debut as soon as 2024.

While there are no concrete guarantees just yet that TF Sport and Corvette will be granted spaces on the 2024 LMGT3 grid due to the size of the Hypercar field, GM is confident its plans will come together. This is because it remains committed to Hypercar with Cadillac in 2024 and Hypercar manufacturers are expected to receive priority when applying for LMGT3 grid spaces.

Cadillac to continue WEC Hypercar program for 2024

General Motors’ two-track involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship looks set to continue in 2024, with Cadillac Racing’s program in the Hypercar class fielding the V-Series.R running in parallel with Corvette’s planned customer Z06 GT3.R …

General Motors’ two-track involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship looks set to continue in 2024, with Cadillac Racing’s program in the Hypercar class fielding the V-Series.R running in parallel with Corvette’s planned customer Z06 GT3.R program in LMGT3.

“We (Cadillac) intend to be in the FIA WEC next year,” Laura Wontrop Klauser, GM’s sports car racing manager, told RACER. “How many cars and all that stuff hasn’t been announced, but the intent is to continue.”

This extended commitment to the FIA WEC is a significant part of GM’s ongoing motorsports expansion in Europe. In addition to securing a base for Cadillac Racing’s WEC program earlier this year in Stuttgart, Germany, GM is also planning to set up a permanent base in Europe for its customer GT3 operation. The location and scale of this new base have yet to be decided.

“We’re still exploring what we want to do in Europe,” Wontrop Klauser added. “For the WEC we are going to have a specifically 2024-only support that we are working with our (LMGT3) team on. But in Europe, we want to do a proper job — we want to make sure we have a setup that will likely include some type of headquarters that we can run parts in and out of.”

By competing in what is set to be an even bigger Hypercar category in 2024 with additional factory entries from Alpine, BMW and Lamborghini, the benefits for Cadillac are twofold.

Firstly, it allows GM to have a second shot at an overall Le Mans victory, and a world championship title. Cadillac Racing’s three-car effort this year tasted success at La Sarthe, when its No. 2 WEC full-season V-Series.R finished on the podium. The brand will hope it can push for a victory in year two.

Secondly, this will help ensure that Corvette is awarded space for two customer cars in the new LMGT3 class. Having a presence for the Z06 GT3.R in the FIA WEC is a priority for the new-look Corvette Racing going forward, as it moves from operating as a factory team to managing a global customer program.

“The ACO knows our interest to bring a two-car effort to WEC to make sure Corvette is represented,” Wontrop Klauser continued. “Having Cadillac here (in the FIA WEC) is helpful for that.

“They (the WEC selection committee) are considering history and heritage. Corvette has been coming to Le Mans for 20-plus years, and we’ve been coming to WEC for full seasons now. We know there are no guarantees so we want to ensure the risk is low.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

Cadillac continuing all but guarantees LMGT3 entries for Corvette. Following the ACO’s annual Le Mans press conference earlier this month, FIA WEC CEO Frederic Lequien said, “I do not see how it’s possible to refuse the entry of a GT3” for manufacturers running a program in Hypercar.

The customer team for Corvette’s FIA WEC LMGT3 effort has not yet been named, though it is expected to be a significant player in the current GT racing marketplace.

“You can expect official announcements to come in the next couple of months,” Christie Bagne, the Corvette Z06 GT3.R program manager told RACER. “We’re looking forward to doing that when it is the right time for everyone.”

Beyond the Cadillac Hypercar program and the two-car customer effort in LMGT3, Wontrop Klauser also revealed to RACER that Corvette is unlikely to file for additional GT3 entries for Le Mans and continue Corvette Racing’s factory racing tradition at the French endurance classic.

“I don’t think we will have the additional entries (at Le Mans) — I think we will be grateful to have two cars in the FIA WEC for the full season,” she said. “They are pushing traditional factory support into Hypercar and that’s where they want to see that type of backing. I foresee just the two cars at Le Mans that we have in the full season.”

LM24, Hour 24: Ferrari wins Le Mans, ending Toyota’s reign

The 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours, the centenary edition of the event that was first run in 1923, has been won by Ferrari AF Corse’s No. 51 499P Hypercar. In a race that had everything – incidents, sudden weather changes, surprise class leaders, mechanical …

The 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours, the centenary edition of the event that was first run in 1923, has been won by Ferrari AF Corse’s No. 51 499P Hypercar. In a race that had everything — incidents, sudden weather changes, surprise class leaders, mechanical dramas and countless on-track battles — Antonio Giovanazzi, James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi survived to take a famous win at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

It was a race that lived up to expectations and saw most of the Hypercar manufacturers in contention for the first half of the race before it came down to a battle between Ferrari and Toyota.

After a titanic scrap between Ferrari and Toyota’s No. 51 and No. 8 Hypercars, it was the Prancing Horse that claimed its 10th overall Le Mans win and its first since 1965.

The race went down to the wire, with the top two on the lead lap until the very end, as close as 16 seconds apart in the penultimate hour before a costly error from Ryo Hirakawa in the No. 8 at Arnage effectively ended Toyota’s chances.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1416]

The No. 8 GR010 HYBRID came home second, but that will come as a colossal disappointment for Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley, Hirakawa and the entire team, who headed into the race with the sole aim of scoring Toyota’s sixth consecutive overall win. Instead, they settled for a podium finish, crossing the line 1m21s behind the winning Ferrari — which had a minor drama at its final stop, the car struggling to fire up.

Completing the podium was the No. 2 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R, which had a metronomic run to the flag, a spin in the wet at Mulsanne Corner the car’s only notable hiccup. It was a really promising performance from Richard Westbrook, Alex Lynn and Earl Bamber, scoring Cadillac its first podium in WEC competition. Cadillac should take great pride in being the first team running an LMDh prototype across the line.

It was by no means a simple race for Cadillac, though, as the other two V-Series.Rs hit trouble in the race and spent much of it recovering. The Action Express example had its chances of a strong finish ended on lap 1 when Jack Aitken had an off in the wet on the exit of the first Mulsanne Chicane, going nose first into the guardrail, causing damage that cost the team multiple laps in the garage. The No. 3 Cadillac Racing machine had a better race, finishing fourth despite losing time when Sebastien Bourdais was rear-ended by the No. 21 AF Corse GTE Ferrari at the Dunlop Bridge and required a trip to the garage for repairs.

The No. 50 AF Corse 499P was delayed by mechanical issues and finished fifth.

Historic win in LMP2 for the Inter Europol Competition ORECA 07-Gibson of Jakub Smiechowski, Albert Costa and Fabio Scherer. Alexander Trienitz/Motorsport Images

In LMP2, there was drama all the way to the final hour. Winning the race was the No. 34 Inter Europol ORECA in what was a coming-of-age performance from the Polish team, which scored the first-ever Le Mans win for a Polish team. Albert Costa, Jakub Smiechowski and an injured Fabio Scherer (who drove with a broken foot after being run over by the Corvette) were superb in the second half of the race when things started to die down. They were pushed to the very end by WRT’s No. 41 ORECA of Louis Deletraz, Rui Andrade and Robert Kubica, who were just 21 seconds behind by the end of the race.

There were multiple late-race scares for the Inter Europol team, which was under investigation for a pit infringement that would have cost the team its lead if a drive-through was handed out. Fortunately for them, the stewards opted only to issue a reprimand. However, the team’s focus quickly shifted as it had to manually place signage on the pit wall to instruct Scherer to pit in the closing hour as the car’s radio failed. In the end though they finished up first and will celebrate long into the night.

The No. 41 WRT ORECA finished second, with the No. 30 Duqueine ORECA third after the No. 41 WRT sister 07 Gibson had a nose change at its final stop and dropped out of the top three.

GTE Am was a war of attrition, won by Corvette Racing and its pole-sitting No. 33 C8.R. Ben Keating, Nico Varrone and Nicky Catsburg were by far the best trio in the field throughout on pace, but it was not a simple victory. A damper failure in the second hour forced the car into the garage for attention, costing it two laps.

The rest of the race saw a spirited fightback through the field, with all three drivers fast and fault-free, climbing back onto the lead lap and into the class lead with a combination of pace and safety car neutralizations.

It was a historic ninth class win for Corvette in the final GTE race at La Sarthe.

Completing the podium was the No. 25 ORT by TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage, which was in the running throughout. The car consolidated second in the final hours when Charlie Eastwood was installed and tasked with catching and passing the Iron Dames Porsche, which dropped to fourth after a lengthy stop at the end.

GR Racing recovered from an early off in the rain showers while leading at the Porsche Curves to complete the podium, Riccardo Pera coming home just five seconds ahead of the all-female crewed Iron Dames Porsche.

Further down the order in GTE Am it was a story of accidents and misfortune, with only nine of the 21 cars in the category finishing. The heavy rain on Saturday caused so many incidents, the changing conditions catching out so many drivers.

Full report to follow.

After a lengthy safety car period for heavy rain, the Le Mans 24 Hours is green and frantic once again.

Peugeot’s lead from the previous hour didn’t last long once the race resumed, as a hard-charging Yiefei Ye quickly passed the No. 94 of Gustavo Menezes in the No. 38 Hertz Team JOTA Porsche. Ye took the lead between Mulsanne Corner and the Porsche Curves after running side by side for the entire stretch in what was yet another thrilling sequence.

It was a dream start to the hour for the British team, which in only its second race with the 963 in Hypercar, started 60th, and found itself leading the Le Mans 24 Hours. But Ye would go from hero to zero before the end of Hour 5, when he made an error at the final section of the Porsche Curves and went sideways into the tires at high speed. The impact ripped the rear assembly and engine cover off the car, and damaged the right front with a secondary impact.

Ye then had to dash back to the pits, where the mechanics pushed the car back into the garage for substantial repairs. Ye was understandably distraught as he climbed out.

“We have the front end, rear end, rear wing all damaged and the floor too. The suspension seems OK. We are repairing the bodywork and we will go again. He just lost it in the Porsche Curves,” team principal Dieter Gass related.

Overall it was a disastrous hour for Porsche in Hypercar, as the two factory WEC full-season Penske 963s both hit trouble too. The No. 6 of Dane Cameron suffered a right-rear puncture shortly after the restart while running second, and the No. 5 was handed a drive-through for overtaking a car under the safety car.

It’s all unravelled so fast for the German marque, although the No. 5 Porsche is still third after its penalty, ahead of the No. 75 IMSA-crewed car that’s fourth. The No. 6 is down to 11th and is a lap down after coming in for a replacement tire.

With JOTA’s hopes of victory over, the pair of AF Corse Ferrari 499Ps are back up front. The No. 50 of Miguel Molina leads the No. 51 of Antonio Giovanazzi, who climbed the order after Menezes pitted the No. 94 and Ye had his off. Although it’s still early, of course, it’s been a very quiet and promising opening five hours from the Italian marque.

In the other classes, the No. 41 WRT ORECA has emerged as the LMP2 leader with Louis Deletraz now aboard. The No. 41 is having a much better run than the sister car, which has dropped to 18th in class after its off in the rain earlier and required a front and rear end change.

It’s a similar story for United Autosports. Its No. 22 is five laps down from the leader after Frederick Lubin’s incident, while the No. 23 is second with Oliver Jarvis putting in a strong stint. The No. 28 JOTA ORECA is third.

GTE Am has had its front-running order changed, as the No. 54 AF Corse Ferrari 488 of Francesco Castellacci has moved to the front, with Martin Rump in the No. 911 Proton Porsche second. The No. 85 Iron Dames car, which led under the safety car, is now down to third.

At the back of the Am field, Corvette Racing remains off the lead lap, the team confirming to RACER that a front damper failure was the cause of the No. 33’s earlier trip to the garage. Initially, the C8.R was two laps down after rejoining but has since recovered a lap since the safety car. Next on the job list is gaining the second lap back. If it can do it on pace, or a safety car hands the team a break, then the No. 33 can get back into contention.

“It was very strange. Everything was going fine. The car was running great and was all good. Out of nowhere, prototypes passed me and after that I had a weird feeling,” explained Nicky Catsburg. “Maybe this was because I had to go off-line and had some pickup, but it wouldn’t disappear. The car was moving around a lot under braking and at all speed. So I told the guys that I think we had an issue. When we got it into the pitlane, it was the damper and we lost two laps. The crew still did an awesome job and couldn’t have done it quicker.

“It’s really tough, though, to come back from this spot. It seems like a disastrous race with the safety cars. But our main competitors in the championship are out of the race, so even with zero points we will still lead the championship. So we need to focus and get as many points as possible. Maybe we can get back on the lead lap. I kind of doubt it, but we will never give up. The car is definitely fast, and everything went well. So I know we have a good car.”

General Motors has revealed additional details of how its Corvette customer GT3 program with the Z06 GT3.R is coming together for 2024.

Over the coming months multiple announcements are expected, confirming customer teams in IMSA’s WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, SRO championships and the FIA World Endurance Championship. Eight cars are expected to compete in year one, explained Laura Wontrop Klauser, GM Sports Car Racing Manager.

“Our desired plan has been to launch in 2024 with four cars racing in IMSA — two in GTD PRO and two in GTD — two cars in the WEC and two in SRO America,” Wontrop Klauser told RACER. “Understanding the timing of the 2024 WEC race schedule helps us coordinate build schedules to ensure we can meet the race timing, assuming our WEC attendance is granted.”

In IMSA, the four cars are likely to be split evenly across the GTD and GTD Pro categories. How the GTD PRO effort will look is still being decided, though Corvette and the Pratt Miller organization behind it are keen to have some form of factory presence if possible.

“There is a plan in place to start confirming our customer teams, and I think fans will be very happy with the organizations we have chosen,” added Wontrop Klauser.

Tire testing with Goodyear and Pirelli is a key part of the development phase for the car still to come. RACER understands that the Corvette hasn’t yet tested on either Pirelli or Goodyear tires (for SRO and WEC competition), but opportunities are expected to arise over the summer months with both manufacturers.

The prospective GTD PRO team from IMSA will lead the way in terms of testing the car over the months to come.

“We’ve said for some time that we will have factory-supported teams around the world in a number of championships with the Corvette Z06 GT3.R,” Wontrop Klauser noted. “Ensuring all our customers are set up for success is important to us.

“One of the key elements of this is our IMSA GTD PRO team who, with our support, is taking the lead on optimizing the running of the car so we can lift all teams to higher performance.”
