The Seattle Seahawks have supposedly offered defensive end Jadeveon Clowney an average of $18.5 million per year. The veteran edge rusher is said to be looking for a price tag closer to $20 million, according to Gregg Bell of the News Tribune.
However, Clowney could actually be waiting things out until he finds the right deal.
“It’s pretty obvious he’s the best free agent available just based on his performance on the field,” Ian Rapoport stated in an NFL Total Access video. “I know the Seahawks would like to bring him back, that much is true. They have not yet met his price, either. We’ll see when it happens, but I don’t get the sense Clowney is in a rush to do a deal.”
It appears that no team has yet granted Clowney’s wishes of a contract that pays him $20 million+ annually.
The Seahawks re-signed defensive tackle Jarran Reed to a lucrative two-year contract, leaving the team with barely over $18 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap.
Clowney may have only recorded three sacks in 2019, but he also tallied four forced fumbles and two touchdowns in 13 games. On top of that, he is just 27 years old and his best years are just ahead of him.
The Seahawks will be hard-pressed to keep Clowney, but nothing is a done deal until someone puts pen to paper.
