Copa America final chaos was stadium’s fault, CONMEBOL charges in bizarre statement

The South American governing body attempted to wash its hands of the whole situation

CONMEBOL may be the organizer of the 2024 Copa América but if you ask the South American governing body, it is not to blame for the chaos at the final on Sunday.

Instead, CONMEBOL decided to cast the blame at Hard Rock Stadium in a statement released on Monday night.

The final between Argentina and Colombia was marred by ugly scenes ahead of the match, as fans stormed through entry gates outside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. In response, authorities closed all of the stadium’s entrances, causing a dangerous crush of fans stranded in the heat and humidity.

To avoid a possible tragedy, organizers allowed scores of fans to enter the stadium without their tickets being checked or going through metal detectors.

One day after the final, CONMEBOL said that it recommended a set of procedures to Hard Rock Stadium authorities, who proceeded to ignore those recommendations.

“As it is already known, during the final held in Miami, fans without tickets went to the stadium’s vicinity, which delayed the normal access of people who did have tickets, slowing down the entry and leading to the closure of doors,” a statement read.

“In this situation, CONMEBOL was subject to the decisions made by the Hard Rock Stadium authorities, according to the contractual responsibilities established for security operations.

“In addition to the preparations determined in this contract, CONMEBOL recommended to these authorities the procedures proven in events of this magnitude, which were NOT taken into account.

“We regret that the acts of violence caused by malicious individuals have tarnished a final that was ready to be a great sports celebration.”

CONMEBOL was in charge

CONMEBOL attempting to wash its hands of the situation is hard to square with the fact that the South American confederation had full control over the entire tournament.

The confederation’s own regulations for the Copa América state that it is in charge of the tournament’s management, and has “full authority” to resolve any issues that arise.

“CONMEBOL shall be responsible for the management of the Competition, with the power to control and organize the matches, and shall instruct its commissions, officials and officers to ensure that the Competition runs smoothly,” says Article 6 of Chapter 1.

“CONMEBOL has full authority to resolve all matters relating to the Competition and its decisions are final, binding and unappealable.”

Hard Rock Stadium responds

After CONMEBOL’s statement, Hard Rock Stadium responded with a statement of its own on Tuesday.

The venue said that it “implemented, and in many cases exceeded, CONMEBOL’s security recommendations throughout the tournament and the final.”

Why a disastrous Copa America should not have you worried about the 2026 World Cup in the U.S.

Don’t blame U.S. Soccer for this mess.

The contrast between Euro 2024 and the Copa America could not have been any wider.

Two major international tournaments going on at the same time. One was played in front of packed stadiums with perfect playing surfaces. There was cutting-edge VAR technology and organization befitting a world-class event. The other was played in half-full NFL stadiums with sod laid over turf and officiating that would make grade-school referees cringe.

There were brawls in the stands involving Uruguay players, and then, there was the chaos in the final as thousands of unticketed fans rushed the gates at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

From the onset of the 2024 Copa America, the issues were obvious. But as fans were turned away at the stadium gates — many paid thousands on tickets — blame was being cast on the U.S. for the abysmal tournament. Others said the nation was incapable of hosting the 2026 World Cup. But saying so showed a lack of understanding about this Copa America.

The entirety of the 2024 Copa America was organized by CONMEBOL, the South American confederation. That included the venue selection, ticket prices (nosebleed seats went for $150-plus in the group stage), standards for playing surfaces, VAR technology and, yes, stadium security.

In 2016, the U.S. hosted the Copa America Centenario. It was a special edition of the tournament, and Soccer United Marketing — the marketing arm of U.S. Soccer — played a major role in the planning and organizing of the event. And according to ESPN, U.S. Soccer cleared $75 million alone by hosting the event.

In the years since, CONMEBOL’s relationship with the U.S. had deteriorated amid the DOJ indictments that implicated confederation executives. But given the struggle to find a host for the 2024 Copa America, CONMEBOL turned to the U.S. instead of canceling the tournament. This time, though, CONMEBOL would run the show and keep nearly all the money. Via ESPN:

The 2024 Copa is a joint venture between CONMEBOL and Concacaf with the two confederations splitting most of the proceeds, and U.S. Soccer set to get the aforementioned $10m, plus 5% of ticket sales. U.S. Soccer will have no role in the actual running of the tournament. There is also a sense, in theory at least, that the member associations — and not just the U.S. — should benefit from the tournament’s proceeds, which are expected to eclipse those of 2016.

That’s what brought the mess that we saw over the past month. It was a tournament with organizers that declined help from the most knowledgable parties in hopes of maximizing profit. CONMEBOL cut corners when it came to marketing the games and coordinating with local law enforcement. It didn’t require venues to have natural grass fully installed months in advance — something FIFA is requiring for the 2026 World Cup.

It’s how a stadium that has hosted Super Bowls, College Football Playoff title games, NFL games and major concerts seemed ill equipped on Sunday. CONMEBOL was simply incompetent and turned down assistance at every turn. It’s how the 2016 Copa went smoothly while 2024 became utter chaos.

When 2026 rolls around, FIFA and the U.S. organizing committee (which includes U.S. Soccer) will have a heavy hand in every aspect of the planning. Like the Olympics, the World Cup has a visible emphasis on security and crowd control. In many cases, proof of tickets are required to just get within a couple blocks of a World Cup venue. Simply put, a repeat of Sunday night’s fiasco won’t happen in 2026 because the organizers will actually care … and be prepared.

That couldn’t be said for CONMEBOL.

Copa America rosters will expand to 26 players, CONMEBOL confirms

The South American confederation has increased the roster size by three players

CONMEBOL has confirmed that the roster size for the 2024 Copa América has been increased from 23 to 26.

The change was announced on Thursday after a CONMEBOL meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The South American confederation added that all 26 players could be part of a matchday roster, provided a team reduces the number of staff members on the bench.

“The maximum number of delegation members on the bench on match days will remain at 23, including players and coaching staff,” CONMEBOL said.

“In the event that a [team] chooses to field 26 players – 11 on the field and 15 on the bench, the maximum number of staff on the bench should be 8, for example. It is important to mention that the maximum number of substitute players on the bench for each match is 15, and the minimum number of substitute players on the bench for each match is 7.”

This year’s Copa América will be a special edition held in the United States, featuring all 10 CONMEBOL nations plus six guest countries from Concacaf. The tournament kicks off on June 20.

The decision by CONMEBOL follows a similar call from UEFA, which also expanded its rosters for this summer’s Euro 2024 to 26 players.

The expansion is in contrast to the most recent men’s and women’s World Cups, which FIFA decided would both remain with 23-player rosters.

Perú pone fin a una era con la salida de Ricardo Gareca

Tras siete años en el cargo de director técnico de la selección peruana, Ricardo Gareca dejó el puesto vacante al no llegar a un acuerdo con la FPF.

El fin de una era, sin duda, pues el argentino fue el técnico que logró rescatar el prestigio del futbol inca calificando a Perú a la Copa del Mundo de Rusia 2018 luego de 36 años de sequía.

Y para este 2022 “El Tigre” logró meter a Perú en el quinto puesto de la Eliminatoria de Conmebol, dejando fuera a selecciones como Colombia y Chile, sin embargo perdió el repechaje frente a Australia en tanda de penales.

El contrato de Gareca y Perú concluyó tras la eliminación en el repechaje, fue ahí cuando comenzaron los esfuerzos de renovación por parte de la Federación Peruana de Futbol que finalmente no llegaron a buen término y el seleccionador dio un paso al costado.

Fuentes en Argentina reportan que la oferta económica a Ricardo Gareca fue por la mitad de lo que venía ganando, algo que no gustó al técnico que además buscaba tener más injerencia en las selecciones menores.

En Sudamérica quieren a México de regreso, ya hay invitación a Libertadores

Alejandro Domínguez, presidente de la Conmebol, lanzó invitación a Pachuca y León.

El futbol sudamericano ya extraña a los equipos mexicanos. O eso nos hace pensar Alejandro Domínguez, presidente de la Conmebol, quien lanzó una invitación oficial a dos clubes mexicanos para que participen en la Copa Libertadores.

La última vez que equipos de la Liga MX fueron invitados a la Libertadores fue en 2016, cuando Puebla, Toluca y Pumas se sumaron a la contienda. Los mejores resultados los tuvo Pumas, que llegó hasta cuartos de final antes de ser eliminado.

¿Cómo estuvo la invitación?

Durante su discurso de investidura del Salón de la Fama, Domínguez dio un especial agradecimiento a Grupo Pachuca. Ya que andaba en esas, aprovechó para hacer una invitación oficial al club Pachuca y León para sumarse a la Libertadores.

“Te vuelvo a reiterar mi participación para que vuelvas y que, por lo menos vos te animes, y juegues la Copa Libertadores. Así como lo hiciste en la Sudamericana puedas poner una de tus placas en la Copa Libertadores“, dijo Alejandro Domínguez, dirigente de Conmebol.

“México es un país tan futbolero como lo son los equipos de Sudamérica, y después de muchos de haber jugado en Copa Libertadores, Sudamericana y la Copa América de repente no tener a México, se extraña la rivalidad porque México es pasión“, agregó Alejandro Domínguez.

Pues no estaría nada mal hacer realidad la invitación.

Nadie está por encima de las instituciones y la actual administración de la FIFA ha recibido un voto de mucha confianza por parte del Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos que ha indemnizado al organismo por más de 200 millones de dólares.

El dinero recuperado de una amplia pesquisa de la justicia estadounidense en todo el caso de corrupción que envolvió a la FIFA ha sido devuelto a las confederaciones afectadas por los malos manejos de exdirigentes.

“Gracias a su intervención en 2015, hemos cambiado radicalmente la FIFA desde la organización tóxica de aquellos días hasta transformarla en un organismo rector mundial sumamente apreciado y digno de toda confianza. Hoy sabemos que este dinero está en buenas manos en la Fundación FIFA y que se utilizará para las finalidades a las que está destinado”. dice el comunicado de Gianni Infantino.

El caso de corrupción en FIFA, Conmebol y Concacaf, del que resultaron más de 50 acusaciones contra entidades o personas, por fin entregó justicia a las confederaciones afectadas y devuelve un poco del prestigio perdido a lo largo de la década pasada.

FIFA puso orden; habrá seleccionados de Premier League y LaLiga en eliminatorias

FIFA comunicó que los equipos están obligados a ceder a los futbolistas convocados, por reglamento y por ratificación de Gianni Infantino

Todo comenzó con la Premier League y un comunicado prohibiendo a sus futbolistas acudir a la fecha FIFA de septiembre si su viaje es hacia un país de la “lista roja” del gobierno británico por la pandemia del covid.

Le siguió LaLiga quien dijo respetaría la decisión de cada club de ceder o no a sus futbolistas seleccionados que en su mayoría juegan eliminatorias rumbo a Qatar 2022.

Pero faltaba la respuesta de FIFA, quien comunicó este martes que los equipos están obligados a ceder a los futbolistas convocados, por reglamento y por ratificación del propio Gianni Infantino en una carta enviada al presidente de la Conmebol, donde asegura se hará respetar las normas y estatutos.

De no cumplir, las ligas y los clubes se enfrentan a las consecuencias, pues FIFA ha sido clara en el sentido que se aplicará todo el rigor de las normas y reglamentos.

Las selecciones no saben aún si podrán contar o no con sus futbolistas, pues aún queda el contraataque de las dos ligas más poderosas del mundo que se empeñan en desafiar a la FIFA constantemente.

La Premier League es una liga ejemplar y lo vuelve a demostrar al prohibir viajes internacionales a los futbolistas que acudan a países en la “lista roja” del gobierno británico por la pandemia de covid, entre ellos, México y todo Sudamérica.

“Los clubes de la Premier League han decidido hoy a regañadientes, pero por unanimidad, no liberar jugadores para los partidos internacionales que se jugarán en los países de la lista roja el próximo mes”, se informó en el comunicado emitido por la liga inglesa.

Casi 60 jugadores de 19 clubes de la Premier League no podrán acudir con sus selecciones para la próxima fecha FIFA que viajarían a 26 países de la llamada lista roja.

La cuarentena obligatoria de 10 días posterior a su viaje sería la razón principal por la que la Premier League ha prohibido por unanimidad los viajes de los futbolistas, pues no solo disminuirá su forma física, se perderán dos fechas de Premier League, una jornada de clubes de UEFA y la tercera ronda de la Copa EFL.

Conmebol y Concacaf sin jugadores de la Premier League

México por supuesto se pierde la presencia de Raúl Jiménez quien ya tuvo actividad con los Wolves tras su lesión de cráneo. Pero su primer rival se ve mas afectado, Jamaica se queda prácticamente sin medio equipo y Estados Unidos sin Christian Pulisic del Chelsea, entre varios futbolistas más.

En Conmebol también es un problema, sobre todo para la selección brasileña que se pierde a figuras como Allison Becker, Roberto Firmino y Gabriel Jesus, entre varios más.

Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile y Ecuador también pierden importantes figuras, aunque no todo está definido, una cosa es lo que la Premier Legue quiera y otra muy diferente lo que la FIFA determine, hasta el momento no hay un pronunciamiento oficial de la oficina de Gianni Infantino, pero lo habrá.

Los brasileños tuvieron un partido complicado ante Chile, pues aunque se fueron al frente en el marcador, tuvieron que sufrir todo el segundo tiempo tras la expulsión de Gabriel Jesús.

Chile lo intentó pero los anfitriones supieron resistir el embate andino e instalarse en semifinales.

Perú por su parte tuvo un encuentro muy emocionante con Paraguay, un duelo de volteretas en el marcador que tras culminar los 90 minutos quedó 3-3 en el marcador y tuvieron que irse hasta la instancia del punto penal para definir al ganador.

Pero en los penales no hubo mucha puntería y Pedro Gallese se convirtió en el héroe peruano al detener el disparo definitivo y poner a Perú en las semifinales de la Copa América de manera sorpresiva.

Ahora tendrán que esperar su rival de los duelos de esta noche entre Uruguay y Colombia y Argentina ante Ecuador quienes habrán de definir a los cuatro mejores equipos de esta edición del torneo de la Conmebol.
