The Rhode Island Scumbag’s guide to betting the 2023 MAC men’s basketball tournament

The Rockets just keep winning. Don’t expect that to change with an NCAA Tournament bid on the line.

The Rhode Island Scumbag is our resident prognosticator who thoroughly cleaned up last year’s postseason basketball slate as a bettor. As such, he’s back to take us through both a select group of conference tournaments as well as the big dance itself. He chooses to remain anonymous (for now) for reasons unknown, though they may be related to the fact “Rhode Island Scumbag — 2021 to present” isn’t a particularly appealing resume item. All text below are his words.

Vegas Baby! That’s right, I’m going back to Las Vegas — I broke down my last visit here around this time last year — but this time I’m going for a different type of March Madness: conference tournament weekend! I will be going from March 9 to March 12 and have isolated four conferences I have been following for a few weeks now. For this year’s betting guides, I’ll break down the MAC, MAAC, Big East and SEC.

The MAC will have eight teams playing for an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament where they will almost assuredly get humiliated on national television while simultaneously helping their respective institution build a new library with the money they will make. What is important for us though is that these teams will ONLY get in if they win their tournament.

Therefore, we are going to see all-out efforts from each team as they fight for a chance to play more basketball. What I also like about these small conferences is that they will actually have seniors on the team because they aren’t leaving to go play in the NBA.

These tournament games are extremely meaningful for these clubs. Teams will try to stave off elimination. Seniors will try to take the floor one more time. In these types of games, I like to play unders and take the points. This is my preliminary approach to this conference.

Odds and picks for each of the Power 6 men’s basketball conference tournaments

Our staff picks for the men’s basketball Power 6 conference tournaments.

The NCAA men’s basketball conference tournament schedule is well under way, and the first of the “Big 6” conferences join the action Tuesday when the ACC tips things off.

The Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC join them Wednesday and games continue through the week until champions and automatic NCAA tournament bids are decided over the weekend.

Whether it’s Alabama, Kansas, UCLA or Purdue, we all feel like we have a grasp on the favorites this year. But they don’t call it March Madness for nothing, so the FTW staff made picks on which teams we’d put our money on.

Breakdowns of men’s college basketball conference tournaments

Without the Ivy League playing this season, there will be 31 tournaments starting at the end of Feb. and extending through Selection Sunday.

The expand-the-tournament crowd likes to argue that college basketball’s showcase event should be larger with more games. But sometimes too much of something great is a bad thing. Why water down the best event in sports with more mediocre teams in search of an unlikely upset?

This is where conference tournaments come in. Except in a few leagues where spots are limited, these postseason events should be seen as an extension of the NCAA Tournament.

Teams have the opportunity to win their way into the field of 68 but in an environment away from the bright lights and national television cameras.

That’s for the smaller conferences. in the bigger leagues, the fight mostly is for seeding, though there can be surprises from teams on the bubble.
