Former Notre Dame midfielder makes U.S. Olympic women’s soccer team

Congrats, Korbin!

[autotag]Korbin Albert[/autotag] was too good for Notre Dame. Like, she literally was too good. She left after her sophomore season in 2022 after signing a professional contract with Paris Saint-Germain. Now, she’s going to be representing her country in the Olympics.

Albert was one of 18 players named to coach Emma Hayes’ U.S. Olympic roster and one of five midfielders. Having only joined the national team earlier this year, she already has won championships in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup. Now, she’ll have a chance to add an Olympic gold medal to her trophy case.

Albert’s short time with the Irish was memorable. She was named the ACC Midfielder of the Year, a First Team All-American twice, an all-conference selection twice and a Hermann Trophy finalist. Talk about a fantastic addition to the legacy Notre Dame’s women’s soccer program has created.

Best of luck to Albert and her Olympic teammates in Paris.

Goalkeeper Matt Turner honored a young fan who died of cancer after playing hero for the USMNT

This was so beautiful after an emotional game.

On Sunday, Matt Turner showed he understands what it means to be a sports hero on and off the field.

With the United States Men’s National Team locked in a heated battle with continental rival Canada in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals, it was Turner who saved the day. The goalkeeper made two saves when the match went to penalties, lifting the USMNT to the next round.

But that wasn’t the most important thing Turner did Sunday evening.

At the game’s conclusion, Turner took off his jersey to reveal he was wearing a shirt with “RIP Malia” written on the front. It is a reference to Malia Jusczyk, a young fan who recently died of pancreatic cancer and someone who Turner had a close relationship with during his time as a member of the New England Revolution.

When asked to clarify the shirt’s meaning, Turner happily explained why he wanted to pay tribute to Jusczyk. And in the end, after discussing what it means to have a significant platform for good, he had quite a beautiful message for her family:

That is just special. That is an athlete recognizing how they can positively impact a person’s life and humbling themselves enough to recognize there are things bigger than the game.

Bank of America Stadium played host to Sunday’s 6-0 Gold Cup victory for the United States men’s national soccer team.

On Sunday night, the (unofficial) house of the Carolina Panthers played host to a pair of CONCACAF Gold Cup matches. First up was the tilt between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago, one the “home team” dominated.

Here, including a special appearance from that elusive natural grass playing surface, are 25 photos from the USMNT’s 6-0 victory:
