Commanders named as the top team that should ‘update their uniforms’

Most fans would agree.

The Washington Commanders unveiled their new brand on Feb. 2, 2022, to much fanfare. While the organization has claimed it was one of the more successful rebrands in sports, fans and analysts would strongly disagree.

Unfortunately for Washington, there is negativity that surrounds everything the organization does. That’s because of owner Daniel Snyder. With Snyder expected to sell the team soon, there’s hope that fans return to supporting the team.

However, for many fans, supporting the current version of the Washington NFL franchise is difficult because they do not like the name. Others do not like the uniforms. A large portion of the fan base hopes the next owner changes the name again. While that seems unlikely, you never know until that owner — presumed to be Josh Harris — speaks on the topic.

When the team rebranded last year, it adopted a third alternate jersey. They were the first all-black uniforms in the franchise’s storied history. While there were some aspects that were nice, others not so much. The same goes for Washington’s home and away uniforms.

The Arizona Cardinals unveiled new uniforms last week to mixed reviews. That led to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports coming up with a list of five teams who should consider updating their uniforms. And despite having the newest uniforms in the NFL, the Commanders were No. 1 on Benjamin’s list.

Notice a trend here? Like the Falcons, the Commanders are just getting used to their updated uniforms, revealing their current look in 2022 while transitioning from the Washington Football Team label. And like the Falcons, their issue isn’t the colors — burgundy and gold have been well-regarded staples of the franchise — but the presentation of them. Substituting the Falcons’ oversized “ATL” chest label for a wordier “Commanders” ID on the home jerseys, their away uniforms also ditch shoulder numbers for a busy color pattern, making for an outfit lineup that looks precisely like one you’d find on a last-minute expansion team.

This is not the first time we’ve heard the term “expansion team” in relation to the Commanders. One issue with the rebrand was last year’s team felt like an expansion team with no history. Some fans felt no connection to the team’s storied past other than some of their favorite current players. Some of the franchise’s legends have distanced themselves from the Commanders due to the name — and Snyder.
The thing fans want most is a winner. If Washington can become a consistent winner again, things such as the name and uniforms will not matter too much. However, the franchise probably shouldn’t expect some portion of the fan base to ever like the name or uniforms.

Commanders to debut all-black uniforms in Week 4 vs. Cowboys

Washington will wear black uniforms for the first time.

Fans didn’t have to wait long for the Washington Commanders to debut their new all-black uniforms. The Commanders practiced in their black helmets Wednesday and confirmed they would debut their new all-black uniforms on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

It’s a brand new look for the franchise. Washington debuted the black alternates back on Feb. 2 when they announced the new nickname.

After practice, Ron Rivera downplayed the uniforms.

“Just to wear it,” Rivera said. “I mean, it’s one of the uniforms we have. It’s one of the alternatives. And we thought wearing black would be good.”

Some of the players were more enthused, including quarterback Carson Wentz.

“I think they’re sharp. I think they’re sharp. Hopefully, we execute well wearing them, but I think they’re sharp. I think guys will be excited for it.”

Right tackle Sam Cosmi was also excited about the uniforms.

“I think it’s pretty cool. I think it’s a really good look,” Cosmi said per Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington. “It’s different, something that hasn’t been seen in Washington before. So I really like them. I think they look really nice. They’re very sleek.”

The uniforms will quickly be forgotten if the Commanders lay another egg Sunday.

Some notable firsts for the Washington Commanders

A lot of firsts for the Commanders in the preseason loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Saturday was a day of “firsts” for the Washington Commanders.

It was the first preseason game of the 2022 NFL season.

It was the first game of any kind where the DMV home team was now the “Commanders.” At least there will be no more jokes by NFL TV shows about “the football team.”

It was the first time fans saw players wearing the “W” on the helmet. You know what? The “W” on the helmet looked pretty cool, don’t you think?

It was the first time for the new Commanders’ uniforms. The white top and bottoms looked better than I anticipated.

It was the first time the “W” logo was at midfield of FedEx Field. The “W” looked good on the helmets, but I’m sorry; how could anyone think the “W” at midfield wasn’t far inferior to the Redskins logo of many years?

It was the first time the “90” on the left shoulder of the jerseys was displayed, signifying the franchise played its inaugural season way back in 1932 as the then Boston Braves. I like the “90” on the jersey.

It was the first time “Commanders” was visible, printed in the end zones. The end zone’s green grass blended beautifully with the gold lettering “Commanders.” However, it instantly made me think, “Green Bay Packers.” When discussing this color combination,  no one doing or overseeing the job realized Burgundy was clearly missing. It was a horrible look for the reason it looked very much like something for Lambeau Field.

Secondly, if the logo is “W” including both burgundy and gold, the end zones “Commanders” also needed to include both burgundy and gold. Thus, there would be unity in the presentation of both the “W” at midfield and the “Commanders” in the end zone.

Come on, guys.

Carson Wentz directed the Commanders’ first touchdown drive (14 plays, 82 yards), and Brian Robinson scored from one yard out, the first preseason touchdown in Commanders’ history.

Taylor Heinicke led a 15-play drive only to throw the first Commanders preseason interception, stopping the drive.

Joey Slye missed the first Commanders’ extra-point attempt, but Sam Howell in the final quarter became the first Commanders player to score two touchdowns in a preseason game and completed the first successful two-point conversion attempt to Alex Erickson.

In the game’s final minute an illegal contact penalty and a face mask penalty helped put Carolina in field goal range, and the Commanders had blown their first lead and lost their first game.

Of course, there were more firsts, but space only permits one more mention. The Commanders announced the new mascot will either be a Hog, Dog, Super Hero or Historical Figure.

Is there any question that the mascot should be a HOG?

LOOK: Commanders in all-white uniforms for preseason debut

Commanders debut their white jerseys in the preseason opener vs. the Panthers.

The Washington NFL franchise took the field for the first time on Saturday afternoon as the Commanders. Washington also debuted its new jerseys and helmets. Which jersey combination would the Commanders use for the preseason opener against the Panthers?

That would be the all-white look that has been popular with the players and fans over the years. However, this all-white version has a different look.

Check it out.

The white jerseys didn’t initially appear popular with Washington’s fans but perhaps seeing them on the field for the first time will slowly turn them around.

The new helmets, though, appear pretty popular.

The Commanders took the field first, but Wentz and the offense managed just six yards and a punt.
