Pac-12 women’s basketball report: Arizona helped Stanford in a big way

Arizona beat Utah on Friday, then Colorado on Sunday. Colorado probably lost its chance to share the Pac-12 title.

Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer won her third national championship by beating Adia Barnes and the Arizona Wildcats in the 2021 national title game in San Antonio. VanDerveer might want to send Barnes a gift one week from now if Stanford is able to win the Pac-12 championship. Arizona just made Stanford’s path to the title a lot more manageable.

Arizona, which beat Utah on Friday, turned around and hammered Colorado on Sunday. Buffaloes Wire has more on the story:

“The No. 21 Colorado Buffaloes just can’t seem to figure out how to beat ranked teams on the road,” Tony Cosolo wrote. “Sunday’s test came in the form of the No. 18 Arizona Wildcats and CU was less than stellar, losing 61-42. With that loss, CU dropped to 21-6 on the season and a concerning 0-4 when playing ranked teams on the road.

“Shooting woes and turnovers were the main pain points for the Buffaloes, as Colorado shot only 28% from the field and turned the ball over 20 times en route to its lowest scoring output of the season. The Buffaloes jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first quarter, but Arizona went on a 12-1 run to close out the quarter and never looked back.”

Stanford heads into a Monday night home game versus UCLA with a chance to maintain the outright lead in the Pac-12 heading into the final week of the regular season.

Before this past weekend of games, Stanford was tied with Utah and just one game ahead of Colorado. Now the Cardinal lead Utah by one game in the loss column and Colorado by two. If Stanford beats UCLA, the Trees will have a one-game lead over the Utes, two over the Buffaloes.

With Stanford visiting Colorado and Utah on the final weekend of the season, the Cardinal (in the event of a win over UCLA) would just need to split to guarantee a share of the Pac-12 title. If they beat Utah, they will win the league outright no matter what else happens.

Colorado isn’t officially eliminated from the Pac-12 title chase, but the chances are slim to none for the Buffs. If Stanford beats UCLA on Monday night, Colorado would need Utah to lose at home to California to have any chance of sharing the Pac-12 title. Utah beating Cal means that even if Colorado defeats Stanford, the Utes and Cardinal would enter their big showdown ahead of Colorado. Since one of Utah or Stanford would win that game, CU couldn’t catch the winner. It would catch the loser, but not both. CU needed to beat Arizona to stay in the title hunt, but it didn’t.

CU Buffs women projected to host in NCAA Tournament

Postseason basketball could be coming to Boulder

Postseason basketball could be coming to an arena near you.

ESPN’s latest bracketology was released on Tuesday and the Colorado women were a projected No. 4 seed for the NCAA Tournament, which would allow the Buffs to host their first-round game and a potential second-round matchup.

The projection has No. 13 seed Long Beach State facing CU in round one. If the Buffs win, they would then meet the winner of No. 5 seed Iowa State vs. No. 12 seed South Dakota State (a game that would also be played at the CU Events Center) in round two.

Homecourt advantage would, of course, be huge for a 20-5 Buffs team that is currently 11-1 at the Events Center.

After snapping a nine-year March Madness drought last season, the Buffs played at Iowa and fell in round one to Creighton. Colorado last hosted as a No. 5 seed in 2013 and lost to Kansas in the first round.

Pac-12 women’s basketball report: No. 25 Colorado, USC’s next opponent, knocks off No. 8 UCLA

USC just lost to No. 9 Utah. Sunday in Boulder vs No. 25 Colorado won’t be easy, either. The Buffs scored a huge win over UCLA, which goes to Utah for a huge showdown.

This Mountain road trip is a supremely tough test for USC women’s basketball. The Trojans lost to No. 9 Utah on Friday in Salt Lake City. It won’t get any easier on Sunday in Boulder.

USC will have to face a No. 25 Colorado team which just took down No. 8 UCLA on Friday night. Colorado’s Kindyll Wetta hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left to give CU a 73-70 win over the Bruins. Colorado is now 3-0 at home this season against nationally-ranked opponents.

That’s USC’s next big test.

Buffaloes Wire has more on Colorado’s win over UCLA, describing the assist pass which set up Wetta’s winning shot.

“The pass came from guard Jaylyn Sherrod, who earlier in the night reached 400 career assists. Few, though, were sweeter than that clutch dish to Wetta,” Buffaloes Wire wrote.

“UCLA’s final heave in the waning seconds went wide at the buzzer, sending the CU Events Center into a frenzy along with the players on the court.”

USC-Colorado starts just after 11 a.m. Pacific time on Sunday. The early start is a product of the NFL conference championship games and the need to not go up directly against NFL programming. Follow Buffaloes Wire for more on the CU side of this game.

Buffs women’s hoops: Observations from Colorado’s exhibition win over Adams State

Colorado looks ready to start its regular season

In Colorado’s final preseason tune-up, the Buffaloes women’s basketball team faced the Adams State Grizzlies on Tuesday in preparation for their season opener against New Mexico State on Nov. 7.

CU dominated the Grizz from the start, especially on the glass. Even with new faces getting time in the starting lineup, the Buffs were the better team in a 75-48 win

Colorado is looking to replace three starters this season, but the Buffs look well-positioned with their newcomers. Look for Colorado to make some noise this season and possibly secure another NCAA Tournament bid.

Here’s what you need to know from a lopsided affair at the CU Events Center:

Colorado women’s basketball: Jaylyn Sherrod named Preseason All-Pac-12

Jaylyn Sherrod could dictate how things go for the Buffs this season

In my opinion, Colorado women’s basketball guard Jaylyn Sherrod will dictate how successful the Buffs are this season.

There’s of course some added pressure on Sherrod now that Mya Hollingshed has departed Boulder, but I’m confident that her confidence will culminate in a huge senior season.

The media is also optimistic about Sherrod as she was named a Preseason All-Pac-12 player on Monday. Colorado forward Quay Miller, who will join Sherrod at Pac-12 Media Day, and guard Kindyll Wetta were also honorable mentions.

The Buffs’ big three begin their season with an exhibition on Nov. 1 against Adams State before hosting New Mexico State on Nov. 7 for the season-opener.

Four Colorado Buffaloes players headed to Pac-12 Basketball Media Days

With the 2022-23 college basketball season around the corner, four Colorado Buffs are headed to the 2022 Pac-12 Basketball Media Days next week

College basketball season is around the corner, and before the action tips off at arenas around the country, players and coaches will head out to their conference’s media days.

The Pac-12 Conference announced the attendees for its 2022 Basketball Media Days, and multiple Buffs will be in San Francisco, CA for the event.

On the men’s side, forward Tristan da Silva and guard Nique Clifford will join head coach Tad Boyle on Oct. 26.

Da Silva comes into his junior season in Boulder having established himself as a good two-way player and a solid threat from deep for the Buffaloes. He averaged 9.4 points per game last season while shooting at a 37% clip from three to go along with 3.5 rebounds per game, and he provides good value as a floor stretcher with the athleticism to defend multiple positions.

Clifford heads into his junior year looking to firmly establish himself as a starter for Colorado. He averaged 6.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest while also proving himself to be a quality defender. Clifford parlayed that into more playing down the stretch, as he started the final 17 games of the 2021-22 season.

[lawrence-related id=12137,12135,12076,12072]

On the women’s side, two seniors in center Quay Miller and guard Jaylyn Sherrod will head to Oct. 25’s event with head coach JR Payne.

Miller proved to be a reliable option off the bench for Colorado in her junior season — her first year with Colorado after transferring from Washington. She put up 10.6 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game on her way to being named the 2022 Pac-12 Sixth Player of the Year and earning Pac-12 All-Conference honors as an honorable mention.

Sherrod put up 8.1 points and 3.8 assists per game while maintaining her standing as a great defender. She also averaged 1.8 steals per game, good for 5th in the Pac-12, while also keeping her turnover rate low at 2.2 per contest, the best mark of her career.

It should be an intriguing season for both teams with each playing postseason basketball last year, and the Colorado’s four reps should all be fun to watch this year.

LOOK: CU women’s basketball reveals new white uniform

Colorado unveiled a new white uniform, among other women’s basketball news

Look good, play good usually rings true in college athletics. Just a few weeks after the CU Events Center was given a court makeover, the Colorado women’s basketball team unveiled a fresh home uniform to boot.

We got our first look at the new all-white uniforms on Wednesday when the team’s official Twitter account released a video that began with Jaylyn Sherrod, Kindyll Wetta and Quay Miller showing off the “icy” jerseys in what appeared to be an Events Center freezer.

My first impression is that they are indeed icy. The all-black lettering makes the white pop even more and you can’t go wrong with the mountains on the shorts.

Have a look:

The uniform reveal was the beginning of what has been a busy couple of days for JR Payne’s team. On Thursday morning, we learned that sophomore walk-on Sophie Gerber was awarded a scholarship, and her hearing the news from Payne is a must-watch video.

Also on Thursday, the Pac-12’s weekly pairings for the 2022-23 season were released with Colorado’s first conference date set for Dec. 14 at Utah. After a trip to the Washington schools from Dec. 29-Jan. 2, Utah comes to Boulder the following weekend.

LOOK: New CU Events Center court revealed

LOOK: The new Sox Walseth Court design was revealed

Colorado men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball will all play their home games this season on a newly designed Sox Walseth Court. The official CU Buffs Twitter account revealed the fresh look on Wednesday and it’s pretty clean, in my opinion.

At halfcourt, the CU logo pops much more with a new gold outline. Also, inside the 3-point arc, a lighter shade of hardwood now envelops the space outside of the lane.

The sidelines got a touch-up as well with what appears to be the same flatirons-type design that was previously inside the playing space.

Take a look for yourself at the new CU Events Center court:

Buffs women’s hoops adds new assistant coach Tim Hays

JR Payne hired new assistant coach Tim Hays on Friday

The Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball team is making additions in the summer. However, this move isn’t about a player. Instead, the Buffs and head coach JR Payne have added assistant Tim Hays to the staff, as announced in a press release from the program.

Hays previously was the head coach at Southeastern University and brings a ton of experience to the staff. Coach Payne discussed the addition of Hays:

“We are extremely excited to hire Tim as our newest assistant coach. He comes to CU with an incredible amount of success both on the recruiting trail and on the court. Tim has a proven track record of player development and has won at every level of the game. He embodies everything that is great about coaching in that he is highly driven and competitive, but also values relationships and the development of the whole student-athlete above all else. I know that Tim will have a huge impact on our student-athletes and their future success.”

Hays lost just 13 games during his time at Southeastern and was at Colorado Christian prior to that and is still the program’s all-time winningest coach.

The Buffs are hoping that the experience of Hays will pay dividends on and off the court.
