Best quotes from Colorado’s fall sports media day

Colorado football, soccer and volleyball players/coaches talked about their upcoming fall seasons

On Friday, media members heard from Colorado football, volleyball and soccer players/coaches at the 70th annual CU fall sports media day. Each of the team’s representatives talked about their expectations for the upcoming season and what they’re looking forward to this fall.

As you’d expect, this year’s event had a different energy to it with Deion Sanders now leading a resurgent Buffs football program. Coach Prime, who entered the room riding his personalized segway, was once again enthused about how his team is coming together ahead of his first season in Boulder.

Below are some of the best quotes from Friday’s fall sports media day:

Colorado volleyball looking to build off NCAA Tournament appearance

Colorado volleyball is looking to build on last season’s NCAA Tournament appearance

Fresh off last season’s NCAA Tournament appearance, Colorado volleyball brings back its two highest scorers and a flurry of new faces entering its final year in the Pac-12.

Those two leading scorers, outside hitters Maya Tabron and Lexi Hadrych, who tallied 362 and 361 kills last season, respectively, are joined by six incoming freshmen and North Carolina transfer Skyy Howard, among others.

“I’m really excited about the upcoming season,” eighth-year head coach Jesse Mahoney said at CU’s fall sports media day on Friday. “We have a nice mix of veteran leadership and players that got quite a bit of time on the floor last year and then a lot of younger players that are searching for roles. We expect to be able to count on them this season as well.”

While the Buffs were unable to advance past Rice in last year’s NCAA Tournament, Tabron, junior setter Taylor Simpson and Mahoney agreed that the experience was beneficial for the team moving forward.

“I felt like we had a lot of talents and made the NCAA Tournament, which was gratifying,” Mahoney said. “But it also felt like we left a little bit on the table there as well. For me and for for us, I think that’s kind of the starting point and an expectation for this program.”

Colorado opens the season at home against UNLV on Aug. 25.

LOOK: New CU Events Center court revealed

LOOK: The new Sox Walseth Court design was revealed

Colorado men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball will all play their home games this season on a newly designed Sox Walseth Court. The official CU Buffs Twitter account revealed the fresh look on Wednesday and it’s pretty clean, in my opinion.

At halfcourt, the CU logo pops much more with a new gold outline. Also, inside the 3-point arc, a lighter shade of hardwood now envelops the space outside of the lane.

The sidelines got a touch-up as well with what appears to be the same flatirons-type design that was previously inside the playing space.

Take a look for yourself at the new CU Events Center court:

WATCH: Karl Dorrell talks offensive improvements

On Monday, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Karl Dorrell shared his thoughts on a tumultuous weekend in Boulder. There was plenty to discuss following Minnesota’s 30-0 shellacking of Colorado and most of it revolved around the offense. After scoring just seven points in two games, Dorrell said he’ll be more active with the offensive game prep and possibly even give backup QB Drew Carter some more looks. Colorado will take on Pac-12 rival Arizona State on Saturday in Tempe.

Prior to Dorrell, the No. 24 CU women’s volleyball head coach Jesse Mahoney and senior middle blocker Meegan Hart took the podium first to discuss their 9-0 start and recent sweep of Colorado State. Mahoney’s Buffs open Pac-12 play on Wednesday at Washington State. Women’s soccer head coach Danny Sanchez hopped on next to talk about his 5-3 Buffs, who face California on Saturday.
