How to watch, listen or stream Colorado vs. Arizona State

Karl Dorrell’s Colorado Buffaloes are looking to turn things around when they enter the Arizona State inferno on Saturday night. The Buffaloes have won the last two meetings, but their offense has struggled in 2021. A win would put the Buffs back at .500 while a loss would drop them to 1-3 with USC looming next.

Phillip Lindsay nonexistent in Texans’ loss to Panthers

Phillip Lindsay rushed for just five yards on seven carries in the Texans loss

The Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers kicked it off in Week 3 of the 2021 NFL season on Thursday night. But, it was all Carolina as Sam Darnold led the Panthers to a 24-9 victory, and an impressive 3-0 start to the season.

Former Colorado Buffaloes running back Phillip Lindsay had scored a touchdown in the Texans’ first two games of the season. However, that trend ended on Thursday night as the Texans’ offense struggled in their first game without Tyrod Taylor.

Texans rookie and former Stanford quarterback Davis Mills got the start, finishing the evening 19-for-28 with 168 yards and one score. Lindsay, on the other hand, had just seven carries for five yards and failed to catch a pass or be targeted in the passing game.

Mark Ingram led the Texans’ backfield with just six carries for 21 yards, and David Johnson had two totes for 11 yards as the Panthers’ front frustrated the Texans all night long. Regardless, this backfield is a mess for everybody.

The loss drops the Texans to 1-2 on the year, with their lone win being in a Week 1 shocker over Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The usage of Lindsay was confusing, and Mills relied heavily on Brandin Cooks, who had nine catches for 112 yards on 11 targets. Perhaps the Texans try and get Lindsay more involved going forward, and they trailed the entire game which certainly didn’t help.

Next up for the Texans is a game against the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen, a game that will be a tough one for them to win, especially with the rookie quarterback still learning the ropes.

5 keys for Colorado vs Arizona State

The Buffs take on the Sun Devils. Here are 5 things to watch as they try and rebound from the shutout vs the Gophers.

The Colorado Buffaloes are trying to bounce back from a 35-0 drubbing against Minnesota this past weekend. On tap next is a matchup against Arizona State, and a tough one at that.

The Sun Devils just lost a close game to BYU and proceeded to drop out of the Top 25. Make no mistake, this is a good Arizona State team.

Moreover, the Buffaloes need to respond as Pac-12 Conference play begins. The Buffs hung tight with Texas A&M in impressive fashion but couldn’t muster up a similar outing against the Gophers.

Brendon Lewis and the rest of the Buffs offense stalled big time against the Gophers and will be itching for some sort of bounce back. Lewis went 8-16 for 55 yards, and the Buffs rushing attack was also nonexistent. Jarek Broussard had just eight yards, and Alex Fontenot had four yards in a game the Buffs will like to forget.

Sun Devils quarterback Jayden Daniels had a stellar 2019 campaign and is looking to revitalize some of that in 2021. Thus far, he has tossed for 572 yards with just a pair of scores and three interceptions. However, it seems to be only a matter of time before Daniels turns on the jets and is back to burning defenses, and the Buffs need to find a way to contain him.

One of the bright spots from the Minnesota drubbing was linebacker Quinn Perry, who registered 10 tackles and was the heart and soul of the Buffs defense. Perry will play a major role in handling Daniels and this tough Arizona State team.

Putting the Gophers’ game aside, here are five things to watch for as the Buffs travel to Tempe and take on Jayden Daniels and the Sun Devils.

Quinn and A with CU Buffs linebacker Quinn Perry

Q and A: CU Buffs linebacker Quinn Perry talks his 10 tackle game and more

First-year starting inside linebacker Quinn Perry has gotten better and better through the Colorado Buffaloes’ first three games. His 10 tackle effort against Minnesota was one of the lone bright spots in an otherwise uninspiring Buffs performance. I caught up with Perry this week to discuss his breakout performance and how his fellow linebackers are developing ahead of Saturday’s Pac-12 opener at Arizona State.

Q: How much of a confidence booster was your 10 tackle performance against Minnesota?

Perry: Nothing really too much. Obviously, we lost the game so it’s not the outcome we wanted. We could’ve improved everywhere. I had missed tackles, some minus plays, so I could have had more opportunities presented and I didn’t execute on a couple plays. There’s always room for improvement but it’s nice to have my first double-digit tackle game under my belt. It’s definitely ensuring that I can do my job correctly and to the best of my ability.

Q: What specifically are you working on improving this week?

Perry: My leverage. A lot of the time they (Minnesota) ran a quick bubble on the outside and our corner missed a tackle and when I came in to clean him up, it was going to be a really big hit, but I just had poor leverage. I kind of leaned back and it just made me miss my tackle.

Q: How is the linebacker room meshing through three games?

Perry: Our linebacker room is great. We have the best linebacker room in the nation. We all think we have a bunch of versatility, a bunch of guys that can do everything (and) even guys who can play out of position.

Q: How have transfers Jack Lamb and Robert Barnes fit into the LB room?

Perry: Those are family to me now. Obviously, they’re both very dynamic athletes. They can play in a bunch of different positions… They bring the whole group up (and) they challenge me to play better or else they’ll come take my spot.

Q: After a tough loss against Minnesota, what are the keys to bouncing back against Arizona State?

Perry: Our thing is we’re not pointing a finger (on defense) because obviously, we gave up points. There’s no real ‘we lost because of this reason.’ It was a collective team effort. We lost as a team. We’re having a good week of practice to fix all the kinks and errors and then we’ll come back Saturday and bounce back.

Q: With it being your first season starting at CU, have you been doing anything different in terms of managing workload?

Perry: Obviously my body was pretty sore after the game Saturday, (it was) a pretty good physical game. I came in the next day (and did) ice tub, massages, chiropractor, laser, everything. It’s a lot of preventative work so that if I do get hurt, God forbid, it’ll be less than what it would be if I wasn’t working already.

WATCH: Karl Dorrell’s game week press conference

WATCH: Karl Dorrell talks offensive improvements

On Monday, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Karl Dorrell shared his thoughts on a tumultuous weekend in Boulder. There was plenty to discuss following Minnesota’s 30-0 shellacking of Colorado and most of it revolved around the offense. After scoring just seven points in two games, Dorrell said he’ll be more active with the offensive game prep and possibly even give backup QB Drew Carter some more looks. Colorado will take on Pac-12 rival Arizona State on Saturday in Tempe.

Prior to Dorrell, the No. 24 CU women’s volleyball head coach Jesse Mahoney and senior middle blocker Meegan Hart took the podium first to discuss their 9-0 start and recent sweep of Colorado State. Mahoney’s Buffs open Pac-12 play on Wednesday at Washington State. Women’s soccer head coach Danny Sanchez hopped on next to talk about his 5-3 Buffs, who face California on Saturday.

Laviska Shenault avoids major injury

Laviska Shenault underwent an MRI. However, he should be ready to go for Sunday’s game.

Former Colorado Buffaloes star Laviska Shenault posted a dud of a game on Sunday against the Denver Broncos. Then came a report that Shenault was scheduled for an MRI and things were starting to look worrisome for the second-year wide receiver.

But, Shenault and the Jaguars received some good news on Monday, and he is expected to play this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

That is terrific news for the Jaguars as the ex-Buffs star has avoided a major injury. At the time, it was thought to be a significant shoulder issue, with some even saying he tore his labrum.

But, Shenault should be ready to go as the Jaguars aim to get their first win in the Trevor Lawrence-Urban Meyer era.

Shenault and the Jags are hoping for a bounce back after a rough start to the 2021 season. The Jags lost to the Houston Texans in shocking fashion, and then they lost in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos as Lawrence and the offense has seemed to hit a wall.

Shenault was wildly unproductive on Sunday, failing to gain positive yardage. To be fair, the Jags as a whole were ineffective on offense and suddenly Meyer is at an 0-2 spot.

The game Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals won’t be any easier, as Kyler Murray has been balling, and Kliff Kingsbury’s team is 2-0 to begin the 2021 campaign.

Nonetheless, terrific news regarding Shenault, and the hope is that his Week 2 outing was a rare occurrence.

Colorado’s Week 4 opponent Arizona State dropped from USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The Pac-12 took a hit in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The previously No. 21 Arizona State Sun Devils, who the Colorado Buffaloes face on Saturday, was dropped from the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll following their 27-17 loss to now-No. 16 BYU. The 2-1 Sun Devils tallied just 26 points in the poll. With ASU’s loss to BYU, a potential Buffaloes’ road upset on Saturday will now carry less weight.

The 3-0 Oregon Ducks lead the Pac-12 at No. 4 in the poll while UCLA slid from 13 to 24 after falling to now-No. 25 Fresno State. Colorado will face both of these ranked Pac-12 schools on the road with Oregon on Oct. 30 and UCLA on Nov. 13.

Southern California (the Buffs’ Week 5 opponent) had 41 points and Stanford received six points.

Laviska Shenault set for MRI after injuring shoulder

Laviska Shenault and the Jaguars had a dud vs the Broncos. Moreover, the Jags WR is set for an MRI.

The Colorado Buffaloes alumni found some success in the NFL to begin the 2021 NFL season. Phillip Lindsay has now scored a touchdown in his first two games with the Houston Texans.

Laviska Shenault had a productive 2021 debut for the Jacksonville Jaguars against Lindsay and the Texans in Week 1. However, Week 2 didn’t fare too kindly for Shenault and the Jags as Trevor Lawrence once again struggled.

Not only did the Jaguars lose again–this time to the Denver Broncos– but Shenault suffered an injury. In fact, the former Buffs star is set for an MRI after injuring his shoulder, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

This is not the news that the Jaguars want to hear, especially after starting off 0-2 in the Urban Meyer-Trevor Lawrence era, but here we are.

It was a wildly unproductive day for Shenault, unfortunately. He finished the game with two catches for negative yardage–on seven targets– and added a carry for zero yards, and the energy in Jacksonville is concerning after they dropped their first two games.

The health of Shenault is more concerning, considering he is one weapon that Meyer and offensive coordinator Darren Bevell were excited to utilize this season and beyond.

The Jags and their staff will be waiting anxiously to hear the news about Shenault, and if he is forced to miss some time, it could mean more targets for DJ Chark, who had just one catch also in Sunday’s loss to the Broncos.

Phillip Lindsay hits paydirt vs Browns

Phillip Linsay catches. Phillip Lindsay scores versus Browns. WATCH.

The Houston Texans went on to face the Cleveland Browns after a surprising Week 1 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Former Colorado Buffalo Phillip Lindsay scored a touchdown in his Texans debut as they shocked the world by handing Trevor Lawrence his first career loss.

Well, the former Buffs running back has made noise already in Week 2. The Texans back took a dump pass and ran all the way to the endzone to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter on Sunday, and he looked rather impressive in doing so.

Lindsay has struggled to find running room so far, but the Browns’ defensive front is a formidable group, so this isn’t entirely a surprise.

But, watch Lindsay outrun the Browns defense and scamper into the endzone.

That was Lindsay’s first catch of the game, and against the Jaguars he didn’t record a reception, so perhaps David Culley and the Texans staff have some plans to get him more involved in the passing game.

The Texans had figured to be one of–if not the worst–teams in the NFL, but so far they have surprised just about everybody except for themselves.

Lindsay joined the Texans after beginning his career with the Denver Broncos, and thus far he has a pair of touchdowns in a game and a half. The Texans then proceeded to take a 14-7 lead on a Tyrod Taylor rushing touchdown, and another upset could be brewing for Houston.

Colorado Buffaloes held scoreless by Minnesota

RECAP: Colorado dropped to 1-2 following a disappointing loss to Minnesota

Anytime a connection is made to the 2012 Colorado Buffaloes, it’s probably not a good thing. This 2021 team now has that unfortunate bond after being shut out 30-0 by the Minnesota Gophers on Saturday. It marked the Buffaloes first goose egg at Folsom Field since losing 48-0 to Stanford in November of 2012.

Any positives were honestly difficult to find for the now 1-2 Buffaloes, who totaled just 63 yards of offense.

“That was a complete beat down in every phase,” head coach Karl Dorrell said.

In Brendon Lewis’ third game starting at quarterback, his offense was unable to find a first down until the second quarter. After Lewis’ third consecutive lackluster performance, questions came down on Dorrell for potential changes on the offense. The second-year head coach said he will “reevaluate everything” while looking at the tape. In the meantime, getting Lewis more comfortable may be the Buffs’ only option.

“He’s having a hard time,” Dorrell said of Lewis. “I got to watch (the film) and talk to him and see what he’s seeing and tell him what he’s seeing and all that stuff, but he’s struggling. We’ve got to be better in coaching him and getting prepared.”

With just 55 passing yards, Lewis was promptly excused for freshman walk-on QB Drew Carter late in the game.

Following a scoreless first quarter from both sides, Minnesota’s offense, and running back Trey Potts in particular, began to wear down the Buffs. Potts rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and then added another late in the third quarter. Minnesota kicker Matthew Trickett’s two missed field goals and one missed extra point were the Buffaloes’ only savior on the afternoon.

Minnesota’s 40 minutes of possession exactly doubled that of Colorado, pushing the Buffaloes’ defense to its limits. DB Chris Miller, DL Janaz Jordan and DT Na’im Rodman were all sidelined with apparent injuries during the contest. Their statuses are currently to be determined.

Missed tackles became another frequent issue. Carson Wells, who had a sack and a TFL, blamed a lack of physicality for allowing Minnesota’s playmakers to stay upright for far too long. Colorado’s linebackers, however, ended up having a solid performance. Three LB’s, including Nate Landman, Quinn Perry and Guy Thomas, all recorded double-digit total tackles.

“Defensively, we hung in there at times,” Dorrell said. “We still missed a lot of tackles and we weren’t getting the ball down.”

Perhaps the most abysmal performance on the day was that of the Buffs’ offensive line. Shades of the Denver Broncos’ 2013 Super Bowl loss came when Iowa transfer Noah Fenske, who made his Buffs debut, hiked it past Lewis on the first snap of the game. The O-line allowed four sacks (all on third or fourth down) while giving RB’s Jarek Broussard and Alex Fontenot enough space for 12 combined rushing yards.

The Buffs now turn their sights to Pac-12 play when they travel to No. 19 Arizona State on Sept. 25.
