Wisconsin men’s soccer rises again in national poll

The Wisconsin men’s soccer team rose to No. 8 on the United Soccer Coaches Poll on Tuesday.

The ranking is the highest of any UW men’s soccer team since 1995, the season Wisconsin defeated Duke in the NCAA title game.

Wisconsin most recently earned the No. 10 spot on the national hierarchy, another milestone it hadn’t earned in seven seasons.

UW currently owns a 5-0-0 mark after defeating Marist, Drexel, UIC, Marquette and #16 Kentucky. With help from superstar freshman Dean Boltz, head coach Neil Jones has captained his group to its hottest start since 2001.

Boltz, a native of Palatine, Illinois, leads UW with seven goals and 17 points through five appearances. Midfielder Trip Fleming has accumulated 11 points in 443 total minutes played thus far.

The buzz surrounding this iteration of the Badgers’ platoon on the pitch is substantial. Wisconsin has allowed just two goals through five contests and scored 16, a sizable 14-tally differential entering a slew of conference opponents to close its season.

The Badgers will play the unranked Maryland Terrapins in College Park, Maryland on Sept. 13. Wisconsin will return home to square off against the #6 UCLA Bruins in what figures to be its toughest bout of a young slate thus far.

Syracuse men’s soccer dramatically won first-ever national championship on astounding penalty kick

Goal!

The Syracuse men’s soccer team found the most dramatic way possible to bring home a national title.

During penalty kicks, senior midfielder Amferny Sinclair kicked in a beautiful game-winning goal on junior Indiana goalie JT Harms for the Orange’s first-ever NCAA Men’s College Cup.

The 7-6 decision undoubtedly cleared the Syracuse bench with players joining Sinclair to celebrate the monumental victory.

Sinclair hails from Alajuela, Costa Rica, and made the play of the season for his team. It’ll be one Syracuse fans will play back in their heads over and over in the years to come.

The goal was like something out of a movie.

Check out the reaction from Syracuse fans watching in the school’s basketball arena.

Talk about a special night for Syracuse. What’s long been a basketball school will now get to proudly boast that it’s got the best collegiate men’s soccer team in the country. That’s not too shabby.

Rutgers women’s soccer remains undefeated yet somehow still falls in rankings

Rutgers women’s soccer remains undefeated but ended up falling in the latest polls.

Rutgers won this past weekend in their home opener against Buffalo. The 2-1 victory led to the Scarlet Knights fourth straight win to open the season and remain undefeated. Despite all of that, they have fallen in the latest poll.

After what was definitely the best season in program history last year, started the season ranked sixth in the nation in the preseason United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Division I Women’s Poll. Following a dominant first three contests, the women’s soccer squad reached as high as No. 3 in the poll. Despite winning again and being one of only five ranked teams with four victories and no losses, Rutgers has stumbled down the charts and settled in at No. 9 in the latest edition, released Tuesday.

So to recap. Rutgers is 4-0. Last week they were ranked third in the nation following two wins to open the season. They beat a solid Buffalo program on Sunday (the Bulls went 13-4-3 last year). And somehow, Rutgers dropped nine spots.

Every team above them is also undefeated, but four of those teams – Penn State, BYU, TCU, and South Carolina – have a tie on their record. ACC powerhouse North Carolina clocked in at No. 1 in the ranking, a unanimous selection for consecutive weeks.

Rutgers is one of four Big Ten teams in the top 25 and one of two, alongside Penn State, to crack the top 10. The Nittany Lions finished one spot above the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers has game two of a six-game homestand scheduled for Thursday, September 1 against the Temple Owls. They should continue their hot start to the season and see a rebound in next week’s poll.
