College Lacrosse: No. 1 Notre Dame upset at home

Tough one on banner day at Notre Dame…

The reigning national champions won’t have to worry about the pressure of a perfect season in 2024 as the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team fell at home in overtime to No. 19 Georgetown on Sunday, 11-10.

Georgetown got things started early, jumping out to a 3-1 lead after one period of play.  From there it out it was a back and forth battle that Notre Dame could never quite get ahold of.

Jeffery Ricciardelli took a feed from Pat Kavanagh to put the Irish ahead 9-8 with 8:41 left in regulation but Georgetown would answer with a pair of goals themselves to retake the lead.

Kavanagh would tie things up late in regulation, forcing overtime but Georgetown was able to stop Notre Dame’s first possession and land the game-winning goal from Aidan Carroll on their first overtime possession.

Notre Dame falls to 2-1 on the young season and returns to action at home against next weekend when they welcome No. 4 Maryland to town.

Notre Dame wins lacrosse national championship

Champions at last!

For the first time in program history, Notre Dame men’s lacrosse can call themselves national champions.  The Irish, who twice reached the championship game previously and both times fell to Duke, jumped out to a 6-1 halftime advantage Monday.

Duke roared back as great teams tend to do though and things were tied at seven in the third quarter.  From there the Irish put the clamps down defensively and the pressure on offensively, outscoring the Blue Devils 6-2 the rest of the way.

Eric Dobson, Jake Taylor, Quinn McCahon, Chris Kavanagh, Jefferey Ricciardelli, and Brian Tevlin each scored twice for the victorious Irish while Jack Simmons scored the other goal.  Liam Entenmann was again outstanding in goal, stopping nine of 18 Duke shots.

Notre Dame back at No. 1 in men’s lacrosse rankings

Light up Grace Hall again!

We knew it was coming but it’s official as Notre Dame is back atop the men’s college lacrosse rankings.  The Irish were rated second a week ago before beating then-No. 1 Duke in South Bend, 17-12.

As a result the Irish moved back up to the No. 1 spot as they now have a week off.  They’ll return to action next weekend (April 22) when they host No. 11 North Carolina.

Notre Dame has just three regular season games to go as in addition to hosting the Tar Heels, the Irish will travel to No. 2 Virginia on April 29 and then to North Carolina the first weekend in May.

Below is how the entire Men’s Division 1 Lacrosse Media Poll checks out:

Top-ranked Notre Dame lacrosse falls to Virginia

Tough one for the Irish today

Last week in college lacrosse, top-ranked Virginia fell to Maryland in a hard fought battle.  Notre Dame’s dominating win over Michigan left the Irish unbeaten and that combination put the Irish atop the national media rankings this week.  It also set up a showdown between last week’s top-ranked Cavaliers against this week’s No.1 Fighting Irish in South Bend.

Unfortunately, the unbeaten streak to start the year is over for the Irish after a hard-fought contest against No. 3 Virginia.  Early in the third quarter Notre Dame was able to tie the game at seven thanks to a goals from Chris Kavanagh and Pat Kavanagh both but the momentum wouldn’t hold.

Virginia answered back with a 4-0 run of their own pushing their lead to 11-7 before both squads alternated scoring before quarter’s end.  Leading 13-9 entering the final frame the Cavaliers put things out of reach as they stretched the lead to 15-9 before ultimately winning 15-10.

What the result means is that Notre Dame’s run as the nation’s top-ranked team was short lived.  The Irish beat No. 2 Maryland in an overtime thriller earlier in the year while No. 3 Virginia fell to Maryland in overtime.  One would think that based off their convincing win over the Irish that Virginia will retake the top spot in next week’s rankings.

Notre Dame returns to action next weekend as they hit the road to take on Syracuse on Saturday.

Notre Dame the new No. 1 in men’s lacrosse

Notre Dame is the nation’s top ranked team after improving to 6-0 in men’s lacrosse over the weekend.

Don’t look now but there is a top-ranked team nationally on Notre Dame’s campus.  The season may be young but the 6-0 Fighting Irish men’s lacrosse team checked in the top spot overall in this week’s college lacrosse media rankings.

The Irish are 6-0 on the year, fresh off an 18-8 victory at Michigan over the weekend.  Of the six wins, three have come against teams currently ranked (No. 2 Maryland, No. 16 Georgetown, and No. 19 Ohio State).  Two Irish opponents from this season also showed up in the receiving votes category this week (Marquette and Michigan).

No. 1 Notre Dame is set for a showdown this weekend as they play host to No. 4 Virginia, who was ranked in the nation’s top spot before falling at home to No. 2 Maryland this past weekend.

As is tradition, the university lit up the #1 on top of Grace Hall to celebrate.

With no sports going on the men’s lacrosse program got some love from the sports media department on campus as the ten best game-winning plays by the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team were counted down.

Some great moments to remember including knocking off some of the top teams in the country (it’s always good whenever Syracuse loses at anything) and in advancing in both the conference and NCAA Tournaments.
