Billy Napier provides an update on QB Graham Mertz

Florida will be without quarterback Graham Mertz when it hosts Florida State this week. Head coach Billy Napier loosely outlined his recovery plan on Monday.

Florida finished Saturday’s game against Missouri without quarterback Graham Mertz under center, and Billy Napier provided an official update on him both after the game and on Monday.

Mertz was X-rayed immediately after walking off the field, revealing a collarbone injury that should sideline him for the rest of the season. He returned to the sideline in a sling to finish watching the game and Napier left the door open for a return, but a second X-ray on Sunday confirmed that Mertz’s season was over.

“We took another image yesterday. We felt good about that image,” Napier said. “We’re going to basically go in a two-week period here where we’re going to give it a chance for the fracture to start the process of growing back and then we’ll reevaluate things.

“In the meantime, we’re going to do exhaustive research on like cases in college football and in the National Football League, relative to players that have been through similar injuries. Just making sure we’re giving him the best map for him going forward with the rest of his career.”

Mertz finished the season just 97 yards shy of 3,000 yards. He threw 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions, two of which were off a receiver’s hands. Mertz was one of the most accurate quarterbacks all year long, finishing Week 13 inside the top five for completion percentage (73%).

The Gators will turn to redshirt freshman Max Brown, who has played one whole quarter of college football so far. Florida State will also use a backup at quarterback, though, so both teams are playing unfamiliar games.

“(Brown)’s been working hard since the first day he got here,” Napier said. “He’s improved. I think the players, he’s got good connection and camaraderie with the players. They see him every day. They know who he is and what he’s capable of.”

San Diego State’s quarterback accidentally hit a referee in the face with a football while throwing it away

College football is back!

College football is officially back, and a referee learned that the hard way during a Saturday evening game between San Diego State and Ohio.

While trying to throw away the football and avoid intentional grounding, San Diego State senior quarterback Jalen Mayden accidentally fired off a pass that nailed a poor official right in the face.

Yes, a referee got hit in the face by a football, and it looked like it hurt like all get out.

Getting smacked right in the face with a football being thrown by a Division 1 quarterback has to be one of the worst feelings to experience on the football field, and this referee should get next week off after this brutal moment.

After the hit, the poor referee in question got checked on at midfield.

We really hope this referee is alright and is able to shake this moment off quickly because that did not look like fun on the game view.

At least he’ll have a story for the ages to share with everyone he knows when this game is over.

Gators release uniform schedule, to wear classic combo vs. Utah

Take a look at the uniform schedule for Florida football this season.

Florida football officially released its uniform schedule on Thursday via Twitter which features the color combinations for each game this fall. Among those listed are the Gators’ duds for the season-opener against the Utah Utes, in which they are slated to don their traditional orange helmets with the Gators script along with blue jerseys paired with white pants.

The Orange and Blue will stick with to color scheme for its matchups with the Kentucky Wildcats and USF Bulls at home before switching to their road scheme of orange, white and blue, respectively, against the Tennessee Volunteers. They then return home to the original combo against the Eastern Washington Eagles, Missouri Tigers and LSU Tigers the following three games.

When Florida heads to Jacksonville to face the Georgia Bulldogs on October 29, they will be wearing the orange, white and blue colors, respectively, as well as for its following game against the Texas A&M Aggies. The matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks will feature an orange, blue and blue scheme, while the Vanderbilt game will have orange, white and orange.

Finally, for their trip up to Tallahassee this season to face off with the Florida State Seminoles, the Gators will wear orange helmets, white jerseys and white pants.

The first game of the season is slated to start at 7 p.m. EDT in the Swamp on September 3. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, can be streamed on the ESPN app and heard on the Gators Radio Network.

Tebow and SEC Nation crew attempt to recreate Gators ‘human bicycle’ celebration

This is the funniest thing you will see today, Gators fans!

Florida celebrated a trick-play touchdown last week by creating a human bicycle on the sidelines. Former Gator Tim Tebow and the rest of the SEC Nation crew found out firsthand how tough it is to get everyone in place for the celebration after attempting and failing to do get it right.

The impromptu attempt came after the Gators’ version of the celebration appeared during “Y’all,” a weekly segment that looks back on botched plays and quirky moments from the week prior. Tebow and Jordan Rogers initiated the plan as the main pieces of the bike, and Roman Harper joined quickly to serve as the handlebars.

Things went fine until the crew realized they were missing Marty Smith as the wheels. Laura Rutledge tried to send Smith over but he didn’t know where to fit it. Then, it happened. Tebow sent Rodgers flying and onto the ground.

Rutledge checked on Rodgers and the group had a good laugh before watching the episode back on replay a segment later. Tebow asked jokingly where Paul Finebaum was after the senior analyst looked on, perhaps with some joy, while the whole thing unfolded.

Everyone gets an A for effort (except Marty Smith), and it’s pretty clear what will be the lead clip for next week’s “Y’all.”
