And here we go.

We’re going into the final month of the season, and now we readjust the rankings to – as always – account for what happened from the start as we respect the results, but also look more at who’s starting to improve and play better and who’s trending down.

What do we do with the total outliers like Bowling Green beating Minnesota or some of the stunning FCS over FBS wins? They’re taken into account, but by this point, teams have gotten better – or worse – over time, things have settled in, and now we can get a better handle on how good everyone is.

It’s the week before it all blows up.

Penn State losing to Illinois was a big deal, and the sleepwalking wins by a few top teams matters a little bit, but we’re about to get into the real fun with the Big Ten East teams about to play each other, the ACC season about to heat up for real – yes, with Wake Forest and Pitt must watch from here on – and with Oklahoma having to step up its game fast.

And Georgia plays Florida next Saturday.

There aren’t a ton of big changes here – as always, if you have a beef, look at the schedule and you’ll probably find your answer – but don’t settle in. These rankings – especially the top 25 – are about to get interesting over the next few weeks.

At the midway point, the rankings take another few twists and turns for a few reasons.

Iowa losing is a big deal, but it’s more than that. Alabama bounced back fast and looked the part, Ole Miss keeps on beating decent teams, and good luck trying to properly figure out the MAC teams, what to do with Texas A&M, UCLA, Utah, BYU, and on and on and on …

There are more inconsistencies than ever – considering our goal is to respect the results over any other aspect. Now we can’t easily do that.

However, as always, if you have a beef with where your team is ranked, look at the schedule and there’s probably some bad win that screws things up.

Or, on the other side, if you’re wondering why the team with the mediocre record is so high, look at the teams is lost to.

With more wild mood swings and changes as the puzzle keeps changing, here are the rankings after Week 7 …

After last week’s bizarre rankings – always based on the results on the field, at least as much as possible – now we released from a few things we had to do.

Sort of.

Now we get to take some of the outlier upsets and dismiss them a wee bit. For example …

Thank you, Akron. That win over Bowling Green means Minnesota – who inexplicably lost to the Falcons a few weeks ago – frees up a whole slew of A beat B beat C, etc. things. That was big.

Thank you, Tulsa. That win over Memphis helped change up a ton of parts – because now there are too many variables to simply go with Memphis beat Mississippi State, who beat Texas A&M, and on and on and on.

So if you see some wild swings in the rankings, that’s partly because one changed piece affected the entire puzzle.

Also, there are two theories we’re running with. We’ll give a few of the Big Ten teams a bit too much love for now, but overall, the belief is 1) the SEC is loaded even more than you might think, and 2) we don’t punish teams for losing to top teams.

You don’t get credit for passing the easy tests, and you don’t get dinged for struggling with the hard ones. As always, if you have a beef with the ranking, look at the schedule and follow it down the rabbit hole.

We’re getting there. At least compared to last week, these should be a bit closer to the pin.

Give it one more week before this all gets right. So before you honk, and before you get all crazy about this week’s rankings, we totally acknowledge that …

Yes, these rankings ARE weird, and they’re wrong in a whole slew of ways. There’s a reason.

As always – to a point – we do our rankings like a conference tie-breaker. If there are multiple teams all tied for a division or conference race, there’s a way to do this where it breaks down into Team A beat Team B and Team D beat … blah blah blah.

Until this all settles down, that’s the only fair way to do this. You HAVE to respect the results, but that’s a problem when you have upsets like happened yesterday.

Stanford beating Oregon messed everything up, and Temple beating Memphis TOTALLY screwed up the rankings.

Here’s the problem. Temple beat Memphis, which means the Temple ranking is wrong, but for now it’s necessary.

The losses were to Rutgers and Boston College, so ranking the Owls behind those two isn’t a problem. However, Memphis beat Mississippi State. Mississippi State beat Texas A&M, Texas A&M beat NC State, NC State beat Clemson, Clemson beat Boston College, and Boston College beat Toledo, and …

In this case, we rank the teams based on overall schedules, results, and how good we think the teams are since other variables are involved.

However …

Stanford. Its win over Oregon throws everything into a tizzy because it lost to Kansas State to start the season.

Kansas State’s only losses are to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State – who are ranked higher – so for now, it has to be ranked higher than Stanford. Stanford beat Oregon, who beat Ohio State. Stanford’s other loss was to UCLA who just lost to Arizona State, but UCLA lost to Fresno State, who lost to Hawaii ….

So for right now, the Kansas State record and ranking is relatively clean, but that means Ohio State has to be ranked way, way, WAY too low. That’s going to change. We promise.

And then there’s Oregon State.

Minnesota beat Purdue, Purdue beat the Beavers, who beat USC, who hasn’t beaten anyone who matters in the higher end of the rankings, and Bowling Green beat Minnesota, and …

Again, this is a mess, but we get it all as close to the pin as possible.

It’s time to blow it all up.

We’re four – and a little more – weeks into the season, and now we have something to work with in the rankings.

For now, we have to respect the results no matter what.

Throw out all of the preconceived notions and preseason rankings. Forget the uniforms, the talent levels, the brand names, and everything else that goes into the rankings and start over.

This will change up in a huge way once we return to a sense of normalcy – think of these like the tie-breakers in conference races. If team A beats team B, then if team C blah blah blah. Basically, look at the schedules and who won what.

Until there are any other variables involved, again, FOR NOW, you must have pockets of rankings like this …

UTSA, then Memphis, then Mississippi State, then NC State, then Clemson. And if that wasn’t weird enough …

Wyoming, then Northern Illinois, then Georgia Tech, then North Carolina, then Virginia.

And because that doesn’t seem totally insane, there’s the Bowling Green thing.

Unbeaten South Alabama has to be ranked higher than Bowling Green, who has to be ranked higher than Minnesota, who has to be ranked higher than Colorado – and thanks, rankings gods, for Texas A&M pulling out that win over Colorado two weeks ago or this really gets screwy.

Of course we have to also give credit where credit is due. For example, blowing out Texas looks a whole lot better now for Arkansas than it did when it happened, and beating Texas A&M is impressive no matter what.

Again, and this can’t be emphasized enough, these will change wildly as we go. But if we’re doing this right, and if we’re giving full credit where credit is due, here are the rankings of all 130 college football teams after the first month of the season.

Always based on results as much as possible – and always trying to blow off preconceived notions – the rankings are fluctuating as wildly as ever.

One thing has become a massive part of this year’s rankings more than ever before – don’t lose to the FCS team.

It doesn’t matter if you had a bad day, or if you were a little off, or if that FCS team is really good – you DON’T lose to an FCS team. Ever.

The CFN rankings are always based on results as much as possible, with the belief that if you don’t go by what happened, then what’s the point of playing the games?

For example, until there’s another variable involved, at the moment, UTSA has to be ranked higher than Illinois after with win in Champaign. UTSA also has to be ranked higher than Nebraska, who lost to Illinois.

Also, our rankings fluctuate wildly depending on the moment. If you really are a great team that just so happened to completely crash against an FCS team – hey, Washington, what’s up? – then that’s reflected here. However, we don’t want to overreact too much, especially after a full Week 1.

The Louisville-Ole Miss and Notre Dame-Florida State rankings might change depending on what happens in those two games.
