All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UAB (1-1) vs North Texas (1-1) Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

Don’t take anything away from the 56-7 loss to Georgia. UAB is really, really good. It’s not national championship good.

This is still one of the most experienced Group of Five teams with the talent to take another Conference USA title. Now it gets to play someone more its own size, and it should be able to move the ball at will on a North Texas defense that’s been awful against the run and gives up 477 yards per game overall.

The Mean Green have firepower, and the D is a wee bit improved after last year’s disaster, but it’s all still going to be a work in progress.

UAB will be able to rumble at will on the ground. However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why North Texas Will Win

UAB wasn’t great at converting on third downs against Jacksonville State.

Going 1-of-11 against Georgia is one thing, but the offense sputtered to keep things moving against the Gamecocks, converting just 3-of-9 tries for an offense that hasn’t been as sharp as it should be.

North Texas might not have the defense, but former North Carolina QB Jace Ruder threw for 366 yards against SMU with a whole lot of big plays down the field. At home, the Mean Green should come up with the offensive pop to set the pace – UAB still has to prove it can keep up.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UAB will keep up.

Give credit for a 31-0 win over the same Jacksonville State team that won at Florida State, and again, losing to Georgia is losing at Georgia.

North Texas will come up with a whole lot of yards, but it’ll have problems putting the biscuit in the basket. It only came up with 12 points against SMU despite rolling up over 500 yards.

Once again, turnovers will be a problem for the Mean Green.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Troy (1-1) vs Southern Miss (1-1) Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

Troy gave a push to a very, very good Liberty team in a 21-13 loss.

The defense is outstanding, it’s holding running games in check, and it has enough offensive parts to own third downs all while not turning the ball over.

It’s a well-coached, veteran team that’s not giving up big plays through the air and should be able to keep the still-emerging Southern Miss offense in check.

The Golden Eagles aren’t doing anything on third downs because of an inefficient passing game without much of a threat down the field. There’s plenty of dinking and dunking going on, and the midrange throws were there in the blowout win over Grambling, but the Troy defense is a whole different animal.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The win over Grambling was encouraging.

Southern Miss got star RB Frank Gore Jr. loose for 162 yards, Trey Lowe had an effective passing game – even if there wasn’t anything explosive – and the offense started to move.

This is all going to be a work in progress as Will Hall is just getting his era going, but the pass rush is solid, there are a whole lot of plays being made in the backfield, and there’s hope if the team can get off to a hot start at home.

However …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Southern Miss has a turnover issue early on.

Troy hasn’t been air tight, but it’s been able to generate four takeaways in the first two games, the defense has been great overall, and the offensive balance should be just enough to pull this off.

On the other side, the Golden Eagles have five turnovers so far, and the passing game isn’t effective enough to push through after getting down early.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Charlotte (2-0) vs Georgia State (0-2) Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

The 49ers have been terrific so far at controlling the clock and keeping the chains moving thanks to a big start from the offensive line.

The running game is averaging 230 yards per game, the easy third down conversions are there, and the team is keeping the ball for close to 36 minutes a game. Running well against Gardner-Webb was no big deal, but it managed to get by a tough day from the run defense to come through in the clutch to beat Duke.

So far Georgia State’s defense has been miserable on third downs, it’s only controlling the clock for 24 minutes per game, and it’s not getting enough from the O to keep up.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia State Will Win

The stats are a little bit unfair.

You can’t start the season against Army and North Carolina and expect to be great in the time of possession battle and do much against the run.

The problems have been with the offensive side that hasn’t been able to control anything. Charlotte’s defense is fine, but this is the game to get the ground attack going and expect to finally start producing through the air.

The 49ers couldn’t stop anything on the ground against Duke and had issues against Gardner-Webb. The Panthers should finally start moving the chains a bit at home with all of its options on the ground.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Charlotte success travel to Atlanta?

Again, Georgia State hasn’t had a true look so far considering the opponents, but this is the real test to see just how good it can be.

The problem is the pass rush that isn’t there. The Panthers won’t do enough to get to 49er QB Chris Reynolds, Charlotte will keep the tempo at its level by controlling the clock, and the O line will take over as the game goes on.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Liberty (2-0) vs Old Dominion (1-1) Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

It all worked in a 47-7 win over Hampton for the first win in the Ricky Rahne era.

It was supposed to be a relatively easy layup, but Hampton had a good QB in former Texas Tech starter Jett Duffey, and he wasn’t able to get loose and do anything against the Monarch defensive front.

More interesting was the offensive side with great balance, a huge day from former UCF starter DJ Mack – he ran for three touchdowns and threw for another – and a great start to put the game away.

In this, the defense has to keep another dangerous quarterback in check and the offense has to keep up the pace. However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Liberty Will Win

Malik Willis has been great so far.

He hasn’t had to run too much, but he’s been effective on the move and he was sharp when he needed to be with a 72% day through the air in the tough 21-13 win over Troy.

As good as Mack is for ODU, the passing game isn’t going to be all that consistent or accurate. If the Liberty defensive front can keep the Monarchs to around 150 rushing yards, and if the offensive side can continue controlling the clock – the Flames have had the ball an average of 36 minutes a game so far – there shouldn’t be a problem.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Old Dominion has to generate a whole slew of mistakes to pull this off, but Liberty has yet to turn the ball over.

It’ll be a rough day for the Monarch D against a balanced Flame offense that should get a big performance out of Willis running the ball. ODU will have to press to keep up, but the passing won’t be consistent enough to do it.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Colorado State (0-2) vs Toledo (1-1) Game Preview

Why Colorado State Will Win

So what’s going right here?

It’s been a disastrous start for the Rams with home losses to South Dakota State and Vanderbilt to kick things off. There’s too much talent in place to struggle this much.

There’s supposed to be more of a pass rush that hasn’t shown up quite yet, and there’s far too much potential on offense to not bring more pop.

Former Boston College RB David Bailey was able to run well against Vanderbilt, but he needs the ball more. Trey McBride is one of the most dangerous receiving tight ends in college football, and again, there’s enough in place to start throwing.

The D wasn’t bad against the Vandy running game, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Will Toledo Win

Colorado State keeps stalling.

Penalties have been an absolute killer so far – 11 against Vanderbilt – and generating long drives was a struggle. Colorado State never seemed to have the ball, badly losing the time of possession battle.

Toledo had the ball for over 34 minutes against Notre Dame.

The Rockets have the guys to push for the MAC title, and they showed the upside in the near-miss 32-29 loss to the Irish. Carter Bradley and the passing game should work, and Bryant Koback is a dangerous back who’ll keep things moving.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Toledo will keep the misery going for the Rams.

This is a well-coached, experienced, tight team that should get over the 11 penalties it got hit for against Notre Dame while generating a balanced attack that owns the clock.

Colorado State will get off to a good start, but Toledo will be steadier for four quarters.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Ball State (1-1) vs Wyoming (2-0) Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

The defending MAC champs ran into a wall in a 44-13 loss at Penn State, but the talent and experience are there to handle the conference season – and a road game like this.

The Cardinal offensive line has been fine over the first two games in pass protection, and now the attack gets a Cowboy defense that’s having problems stopping teams on third downs because it’s not slowing down the run.

Wyoming doesn’t like to play a high-flying style, and Ball State should be fine with that. Grind it a bit, rely on veteran QB Drew Plitt to make the key plays happen to keep the chains moving, repeat.

With that said …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Wyoming Will Win

Wyoming would be more than happy to keep this game in the teens, but it’s coming off a wile 50-43 win over Northern Illinois. The defense had a rough time, but the O kept up with a big passing day from Sean Chambers, close to 200 rushing yards as a team, and with enough pop early to be able to hold on late.

The Cowboys have been fantastic on third downs – they have to keep Ball State off the field – and turnovers haven’t been a problem so far. The three takeaways against the Huskies helped.

And yes, the defense is far better than it looked and played in DeKalb. It’s not going to give up close to 500 yards this week.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s an interesting measuring stick game for both teams.

Can the Wyoming defense really get it back after melting down late last week? Can Ball State get the offense going after struggling against Penn State? It’ll be a little of both for both sides, with the home team getting a bit more out of the defense when it absolutely has to.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

East Carolina (0-2) vs Marshall (2-0) Game Preview

Why East Carolina Will Win

Really? East Carolina is getting a decent performance from …

The defense?!

The offense is supposed to be fantastic with all the veteran pieces in place, but the defensive side has been the bright spot, especially on third downs.

It’s hardly a rock – the run D has been mediocre and there have been too many downfield passes – but it was able to keep the South Carolina running game from going off in a 20-17 win. Appalachian State rolled for almost 500 yards, but at least the Pirates were okay on third downs.

Marshall might look great so far, but Navy just isn’t very good and beating NC Central 44-10 is no big deal. Even so, turning the ball over five times is a concern.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Marshall Will Win

Yeah, the competition hasn’t been anything to chirp about, but the Thundering Herd have been outstanding defensively with unstoppable play from the front that’s living in the backfield.

Grant Wells has to chill on the interceptions, but he’s hitting 70% of his passes for an attack that’s connecting on third downs – East Carolina’s defense will have a hard time holding up.

The Pirate pass rush has been just okay, and now it’s going against a Herd O line that’s been a brick wall so far and should give Wells plenty of time.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the East Carolina offense finally start to do what it’s supposed to? Not against this defense. It’s the first time the Herd have dealt with a dangerous passing game, but they’ll come through just fine.

It’ll be a grind of a game for a while, but Marshall will bust through in the second half with two good scoring drives.

A few Herd turnovers will keep ECU in the game, though.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Akron (0-2) vs Bryant (1-1) Game Preview

Why Bryant Will Win

The Bulldogs stuffed Sacred Heart last week – helped by three picks – and with a running game that did a great job behind a strong offensive front.

They might have been crushed by Rhode Island to start the season, but they’ve got enough options to keep things moving a bit against an Akron defense that hasn’t been close so far at stopping anyone’s passing game.

There’s no pressure into the backfield and the run D is allowing close to 250 yards per game. At the very least, Bryant should be able to generate a bit of a push.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Akron Will Win

Bryant doesn’t score.

It couldn’t keep up against Rhode Island and despite getting the ground game going, it only put up 17 against Sacred Heart.

There’s no passing attack to worry about, there’s no deep threat who can stretch the field, and Akron should be able control the clock and the game from the start.

It’s been a rough start against Auburn and Temple, but the passing attack hasn’t been too bad. This week, though …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the program’s second win since late October of 2018 with the running game that’s finally going to get some room to breathe.

The Zips showed a few signs of life last week in the loss to Temple, and now the program gets to finally have a little fun. Not a lot, but it’ll be a win for a team in desperate need of any positive momentum.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Appalachian State (1-1) vs Elon (1-1) Game Preview

Why Elon Will Win

The Phoenix can throw a bit.

The passing game worked well in the opening week loss to Wofford, and Davis Cheek had a strong game in the win against Campbell. Against the Mountaineers, the running attack isn’t going to be enough; he’s going to have to push the ball deep a wee bit.

Against the strong-running Wofford team, the Elon defense gave up yards in chunks, but it was still in the game for a full four quarters and didn’t get gouged too badly.

Coming off the loss to Miami and with Marshall up next, Elon has to hope the Mountaineers are a wee bit unfocused, and it needs ASU QB Chase Brice to start turning the ball over and make more mistakes. However …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Just assume Appalachian State has over 200 rushing yards getting off the bus.

It was held to just over three yards per carry against Miami, but the team was still battling in a tight two point loss because the defense held up. The Mountaineers will get behind the line enough to keep Elon from ever being comfortable, and no, there won’t be a whole lot of running on this group.

Be surprised if the Phoenix hit the 100-yard mark on the ground.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Appalachian State showed just how good it is and could be with the close call loss to the Canes on the road. This week they dominate a decent FCS team to get back on track before a solid Group of Five showdown against Marshall.

The defense is good, the running game is better, and this is over just after halftime.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oregon State (1-1) vs Idaho (1-1) Game Preview

Why Idaho Will Win

At least the offense had some fun in the opener against the Clan of Simon Fraser – a Division II team from Canada – with the passing game bombing away and the ground attack doing even more with a 316-yard day in the 68-0 win.

The tables turned a wee bit in a 56-14 loss to Indiana the week after, but QB Mike Beaudry threw for close to 200 yards and two touchdowns – a bit of a silver lining in the ugly blowout. Now he has to get ready to throw a whole lot more.

Oregon State’s defense has had issues on third downs, the defense is giving up yards in chunks – losing to Purdue but beating Hawaii – and this hasn’t been a consistent start offensively.

Idaho has to throw and throw some more on a Beaver D that allowed well over 300 yards in each of the first two games, and then hope to catch a few breaks.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Idaho defense wasn’t all that bad overall against Indiana, but it got off to a rough start and never recovered.

Oregon State will give the Vandals a problem, though.

Chance Nolan has been terrific so far – averaging over 10 yards per throw – and the running game got going against Hawaii thanks by a big day from the offensive line.

The Beaver defense hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been able to take the ball away. The Vandals will start to throw picks after getting down.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Idaho would love to get into a fun offensive game and keep pressing the questionable Oregon State D, but it’s not going to happen.

There won’t be any semblance of a Vandal running game, and the pass protection won’t be there to consistently do much against a Beaver defensive front that has its best performance of the year.
