Music City Bowl? A ranked SEC opponent? ESPN is making a big bowl projection for Rutgers football

ESPN made two projections for Rutgers football’s bowl game destination.

ESPN is projecting that Rutgers football is heading to the Music City Bowl. The opponent would be Tennessee.

The game would essentially be a road one for Rutgers, given that Nashville is in Tennessee. The Volunteers played at Nissan Stadium earlier this year.

It would be a fitting projection by ESPN for Rutgers. In 2005, the first year of bowl eligibility for Rutgers, the program played in the Insight Bowl (Phoenix, Arizona) against Arizona State. This is the first year of bowl eligibility for Rutgers under Schiano and would set up a similar scenario.

Tennessee went on the road and beat Kentucky this weekend. With the win, they are now 6-2 (3-2 SEC) and are ranked No. 16 in the nation in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

The projection from ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura likely means that Rutgers would need to win at least one if not two of their remaining four games.

The other projection is from ESPN’s Mark Schlabach and has Rutgers playing Boston College on Dec. 28 in the Pinstripe Bowl. The bowl game is the closest to Rutgers with the venue famed Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.

The common theme for both games? Jason Baum.

A long-tenured senior associate athletic director and chief communications officer at Rutgers, Baum recently was the senior associate athletic director at Boston College.

He is currently the executive associate athletics director of brand advancement and chief communications officer with Tennessee athletics.

Just call it the Baum Bowl and be done with it.

USA TODAY Sports has an old Big East rival in a bowl game for Rutgers football

Rutgers football has a good bowl projection from USA TODAY.

Rutgers football just can’t escape all these Big East rivalries. The latest bowl projection from USA TODAY Sports has Rutgers playing a team it knows quite well.

At 6-2 (3-2 Big Ten), it all seems real as Rutgers is bowl-eligible following Saturday’s 31-14 win at Indiana. And now all those bowl projections from the last few weeks finally have meaning.

According to USA TODAY’s Erick Smith, Rutgers is heading to the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 28 where it will face Boston College. The two programs were members of the Big East two decades ago before Boston College and Virginia Tech left to join the ACC.

Earlier this year, Rutgers won over Virginia Tech to improve their then record to 3-0 on the season. Rutgers has four wins on the year against Power Five competition.

Last year, using a late-game drive, Rutgers won at Boston College in the season opener for both programs.

The Pinstripe Bowl is geographically the closest bowl to Rutgers, as it is played in New York City (Bronx) at Yankee Stadium. Rutgers owns a 1-1 record in the bowl game.

Boston College’s head coach is Jeff Hafley, who was a member of the Rutgers coaching staff during Schiano’s first tenure with the program.

One of two bowl projections from ESPN this week has Rutgers heading to the Pinstripe Bowl.

ESPN updates bowl projections after Week 8

The Tigers are coming off 35-28 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday in Oxford.

Auburn pulled off a 35-28 victory on Saturday against Ole Miss in Oxford as Bo Nix hit Seth Williams for a 58-yard touchdown to go ahead with just more than a minute left.

The Tigers were rewarded in ESPN’s latest bowl projections by one writer, Kyle Bonagura. The scribe has the Tigers going to the Citrus Bowl in Orlando to face the Big Ten’s Michigan. Auburn has played the Wolverines twice in the two program’s histories with the Tigers winning the 1984 Sugar Bowl 9-7 on three Al Del Greco field goals while Michigan defeated Auburn 31-28 in the 2001 Citrus Bowl.

His colleague, Mark Schlabach, didn’t give the Tigers much credit for the victory. He has Auburn traveling to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl to face Virginia Tech. The Tigers and Hokies have met once before, that coming in the 2005 Sugar Bowl with Auburn holding on for a 16-13 victory to complete an undefeated season.
