The last time Michigan and Michigan State played each other, things were quite different. It was a top-15 matchup. Since that game on Jan. 5, Michigan is just 3-5 and Michigan State is 4-4. The Wolverines will look for revenge on Saturday against the Spartans after they lost 87-69 in the first game. Not only do both schools want bragging rights, but a win would boost their confidence.

MSU (16-7, 8-4) is currently on a two-game losing streak after the Spartans lost a 75-70 heartbreaker to Penn State on Tuesday. It was a surprising loss considering superstar Cassius Winston went to the free throw line to potentially tie the game with 11 seconds left to play and missed. Winston still led the way for MSU, scoring 25 points and tallying nine assists. However, no other teammate scored in double digits and the team committed 15 turnovers. Winston is averaging 24 points and nine assists in his past four games against Michigan, all victories.

Michigan (13-9, 4-7) also had an unfortunate loss to Ohio State on Tuesday in a 61-58 defeat at home. It was Michigan’s third consecutive home loss in a game that featured 15 lead changes. Michigan has shot poorly from all over the floor in its last three home games, all defeats. The Wolverines shot just 25 percent to begin the game (5-for-20), including 1-for-9 from three-point range. Michigan will have to rely on its defense, which is fourth in the country and first in the Big Ten in limiting opponents’ assists. The Wolverines more than ever need a victory to climb out of the Big Ten basement.
