The College 12-Pack: Previewing the CFP National Championship, does CFB need a commish?

Time for a new podcast episode from Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno.

It all comes down to just one game. All of the practices in the spring, the games in the fall, and now we have two teams remaining. So who will rise and cement themselves into college football history? College Wire senior editor Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno of LSU Tigers Wire and For The Win are here to get you ready for the big game.

Rose Bowl Recap—It was a close game but the Michigan Wolverines needed a late-game comeback to tie the game and eventually send it to overtime. Was this more of Michigan being a team of destiny or did Alabama fumble the bag?

Sugar Bowl Recap–The Texas Longhorns and Washington Huskies met for the second straight postseason. The result was the same, a win for UW. Michael Penix Jr. and the trio of receivers were just too much for the Longhorns, although they had a chance to win the game late. The win came at a cost for the Huskies, they are likely without running back Dillon Johnson for the title game.

College Football National Championship–The matchup is set. The Michigan Wolverines vs. the Washington Huskies. Two teams that are 14-0 and will share a conference in 2024. Can the Huskies repeat history and claim a national championship after defeating the Wolverines just as they did in 1991?

Reviewing the Crimson Tide–There is no reason for the Tide to hang their heads. You could argue that they played well above the expectations for this season. Still, there is plenty of work to do before they make another run in 2024. Alabama needs a serious upgrade on the offensive line.

Reviewing the Longhorns–It was quite the year for UT, they went from 8-5 and third place in 2022 to Big 12 champions in 2023. They leave the conference they called home since 1996 for the high-powered SEC in 2024. Can Sark do the unthinkable and take claim of the Horns’ new conference home in year one? Easier said than done.

Changes needed in CFB–The entire college football landscape is an absolute mess at this point. Teams were trying to finalize their early signing recruiting class in mid-December while simultaneously trying to manage their roster with so many transfers and getting ready for bowl season. The calendar needs work and if you ask Patrick, we need an FBS commissioner.

College 12-Pack discusses Florida-Georgia, Oregon-Utah

Patrick and Tyler dish on Connor Stalions, Week 9, and coaches faces the heat.

With Week 9 on the horizon in college football, Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno get you set for the week with four big games of the week. It all begins in Jacksonville where the home of the Jaguars is set to host the annual World’s Largest Cocktail Party between the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs.

Patrick Conn (@patrickconncfb) and Tyler Nettuno (@tylernettuno) kick off the show with a discussion surrounding suspended Michigan assistant Connor Stalions and “hand signal gate.”

This isn’t the NCAA finding reasons to investigate the Wolverines, there is something to this sign-stealing saga going on in the Big Ten. There might be an easy solution as suggested by Nebraska’s Matt Rhule, Ohio State’s Ryan Day, and LSU’s Brian Kelly.

There are four games that take center stage on the podcast, kicking off in Jacksonville for Florida-Georgia. Do the Gators have a shot to end the longest winning streak in college football or will the Bulldogs continue their dominance over their SEC East rivals?

After the win over USC in dramatic fashion, the Utah Utes host the Oregon Ducks in Salt Lake City. Bo Nix and the Ducks are looking to keep pace at the top of the Pac-12 to hopefully get a rematch with Washington in the title game. To do so, they have to knock off a stingy Utah squad.

When it comes to BYU-Texas, it isn’t a game that will command national attention for the most part. However, there is some intrigue with Quinn Ewers missing the game due to an AC joint injury that head coach Steve Sarkisian is calling a “week-to-week” injury for the former five-star quarterback. Sark is also facing his alma mater this week, he played for the Cougars during the 1995 and 1996 seasons. Can Texas get to 7-1, which would be a first for Sark as a head coach?

The Duke Blue Devils and Louisville Cardinals are both coming off losses to ACC foes. Duke was outscored 21-0 in the fourth quarter against Florida State after quarterback Riley Leonard left with a re-injured ankle. Louisville fell through the trap door against then 1-5 Pittsburgh. Both teams have aspirations to play for the ACC title, that journey begins when these two top 25 teams lock horns on Saturday.

Patrick and Tyler round out the show with some hot-seat discussion. Brian Ferentz, Jimbo Fisher, and Sam Pittman are among the coaches who made the College Sports Wire midseason list.

College 12-Pack discusses upset alerts and the Red River Rivalry

Newest College 12-Pack features plenty of discussion surrounding the Red River Rivalry game.

The College 12-Pack kicked off with a discussion about the Red River Rivalry. The game features two SEC-bound teams in 2024, who are both 5-0 and 2-0 in Big 12 play this season. Who has the edge?

The annual showdown on the Texas State Fairgrounds is part of a dying breed in college football since it is played on a neutral site. But where would you rank this game among the best college rivalry games? Patrick and Tyler have different opinions on where they should rank among ‘The Game’, ‘The Iron Bowl’, and the annual Army-Navy game.

Ohio State and Georgia have a test this weekend when they play Maryland and Kentucky respectively. Should either team be on upset alert? The guys will also tackle the LSU-Missouri, Alabama-Texas, and Notre Dame-Louisville matchups.

Plus who is the most overpaid coach who doesn’t reside in College Station and projecting the CFP top four? Check out the full episode of the Week 6 preview below or wherever you get your podcasts.

College 12-Pack: Michael Oher vs Tuohy Family, top 25 poll reactions

Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno discuss the wild Michael Oher story and react to the preseason top 25 polls.

The Blindside book came out in 2006 and the movie was released in 2009. The story of the Tuohy family taking in Michael Oher and providing him with a happy home is a heartwarming story.

It now appears as if that fairy tale story might not have a happy ending with Oher suing the family for $15 million. Not to mention the family never adopted Oher but instead forced him to sign a conservatorship. That allowed the family to make millions off of the movie deal according to the lawsuit.

We kick off this week’s College 12-Pack by discussing this wild story that has stolen the headlines over the last several days.

With the coaches poll and AP poll being released over the last week, Patrick and Tyler discuss which teams are too high, too low, and who should have made the list. The guys also look at week zero matchups, Johnny Manziel’s untold story, and what Jim Harbaugh’s future looks like.

College 12-Pack: More conference realignment chaos

As we enter the month of August, the guys focus on conference realignment and Skip Holtz’s return to CFB.

After wrapping up the series on conference previews, Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno discuss the latest news across the college football landscape.

We kick off segment one with an update on the happenings within the Northwestern football program. The school announced that current USFL head coach Skip Holtz would accept a role as a special advisor to the head coach. What does this mean beyond this upcoming season?

We start the realignment havoc segment with the latest reports coming from the Big 12, Pac-12, and the Big Ten. The Big 12 is expected to add at least the Arizona Wildcats but they could be a packaged deal with the Arizona State Sun Devils, which begs the question of who will be No. 16 in the conference for the 2024 season.

Tune in for the latest episode from Patrick and Tyler. We also dive into the Pac-12 season and the laundry list of quarterbacks that will take the field out west.

Tennessee’s punishment and the 2023 Pac-12 preview on the ‘College 12-Pack’

The guys weigh in on the Pac-12 in the final Power Five preview.

The final Power Five conference preview takes us to the Pac-12 this week but first, the guys check in on the SEC.

The NCAA handed down the punishment for the recruiting infractions that occurred at Tennessee under the leadership of Jeremy Pruitt. Was it enough and how do the Volunteers avoid a postseason ban?

We stay in the SEC for segment two to discuss the conference moving the media days to Dallas, Texas. Could the conference look to add more events in the Lone Star State such as the annual baseball tournament?

Much like the Big 12, the Pac-12 is going into a season where two main members are on the way out the door. The USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins are Big Ten bound following the season but do either have a shot to take the crown?

From Caleb Williams to Rome Odunze to Bo Nix to Coach Prime, Patrick and Tyler preview the upcoming season for the Pac-12 in the latest ‘College 12-Pack’.

College 12-Pack podcast looks at the Northwestern fallout and more

USC joins the #B1G in 2024, so it’s worth listening to what @PatrickConnCFB and @TylerNettuno have to say about Northwestern.

Northwestern isn’t a USC competitor right now, but it will be in one year when the Trojans join the Big Ten. NU is more of a concern for USC fans than it ever was in the past (except for the 1996 Rose Bowl).

On the latest College 12-Pack podcast, Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno talk about the mess at Northwestern. There’s a lot to unpack about the situation. The College 12-Pack is the place to get a fuller national look at this complicated drama.

Earlier in the week, we wrote about the departure of football coach Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern:

“USC versus Northwestern was not likely to be a top-tier showcase in the Trojans’ first season of Big Ten football, but Pat Fitzgerald has established a reputation as a quality defensive coach. Riley versus Fitzgerald — when USC had the ball — was shaping up as a fascinating contrast of styles and an intriguing 2024 chess match. However, after Northwestern fired Fitzgerald on Monday following investigations into allegiations of hazing and other significant problems within the NU program, Riley doesn’t know who will be coaching the Wildcats in 2024.”

We talked about the Northwestern coaching search here.

The College 12-Pack podcast also offered a preview of the ACC football season. Patrick and Tyler added a separate segment on the recent 2023 MLB draft. There’s a lot to talk about on the new College 12-Pack podcast.

College 12-Pack podcast explores San Diego State and the Big Ten

At @College_Wire, the College 12-Pack with @PatrickConnCFB and @TylerNettuno explores topics of interest to #USC fans.

USC is leaving for the Big Ten next year. This obviously means that the Big Ten is now a much bigger topic of interest to Trojan fans. Yet, while the Men of Troy are leaving the Pac-12, it’s still very interesting to see what will happen to the Pac in the near future. Will San Diego State join? People want to know, within and beyond the walls of the USC campus. It’s all very intriguing.

The College Wire’s new show is here to unpack these topics. The College 12-Pack podcast, co-hosted by Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno, dives into the San Diego State realignment drama and the world of Big Ten football. It’s a combination of topics USC fans should find highly interesting. If you’re not that familiar with the Big Ten Conference but want to get up to speed, this show with Patrick and Tyler is just for you.

There’s also a discussion of the Northwestern football situation. We offered one national writer’s list of coaching candidates for the now-open position.

Previewing the ACC/Notre Dame for the 2023 season

Previewing the upcoming season in the ACC plus initial takeaways from the first round of the MLB draft.

We are still over a month away from the start of the 2023 college football season for the ACC and Notre Dame but there are plenty of talking points as we march toward the season.

Patrick Conn (College Sports Wire) and Tyler Nettuno (LSU Tigers Wire) return for the second of two episodes this week with a preview of the ACC as well as a discussion on the Northwestern-Pat Fitzgerald situation.

Pat Fitzgerald is out, what is next?

When the guys recorded the Big Ten preview episode, Pat Fitzgerald was still the head coach of the Northwestern Wildcats. The school announced they fired the head coach with cause to try and avoid having to pay the remaining amount on his massive contract.

What is next for both Fitzgerald and Northwestern?

MLB draft takeaways

The huge story for the MLB draft revolved around the LSU Tigers. Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews were the first teammates to be selected with the top two selections. The surprise came when the Detroit Tigers went with top high school prospect Max Clark over Florida’s Wyatt Langford.

The guys discuss the top five and all of the LSU Tigers who were drafted.

 ACC, Notre Dame Preview

It was the ACC’s turn in our preseason preview series. While Notre Dame is an official member of the ACC for football, we added the Fighting Irish to our conversation since they play half of their games against ACC foes including the Clemson Tigers and North Carolina State Wolfpack.

Patrick and Tyler make their picks for offensive and defensive MVP as well as title game picks and who is under pressure in 2023.

College 12-Pack podcast dives into the 2023 college football season

.@PatrickConnCFB and @TylerNettuno deliver their latest College 12-Pack podcast at @College_Wire.

USC versus the SEC. We would love to see the Trojans go up against an SEC team in this season’s College Football Playoff, the last four-team playoff before the move to 12 teams in 2024.

Therefore, USC fans will want to listen to the latest College 12-Pack podcast from Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno of College Sports Wire. Patrick and Tyler preview the 2023 SEC football season.

Highlights of the show include these SEC football topics:

— Offensive MVP

— Defensive MVP

— Breakout Performer

— Biggest Question Mark

— Most Under Pressure

— Who needs a winning season most

— Surprise Team

— Dark Horse

— SEC Championship picks

— CFP Teams from the SEC

Texas and Oklahoma aren’t yet part of the SEC — that won’t happen until 2024 — but the SEC is still going to be a very fascinating realm of activity in college football this year.

Real talk: USC won’t be ranked higher than the SEC champion at the end of the regular season, but if the Trojans can finish higher than the second-place SEC team, their chances of making the four-team playoff will be very good.
