Report: Arkansas offensive line coach Cody Kennedy expected to take job at Mississippi State

Arkansas was 129th out of 133 in sacks allowed and 91st in yards rushing per game in 2023.

Arkansas offensive line coach Cody Kennedy had been linked with other jobs during the week and Friday morning, FootballScoop reported that Kennedy is expected to be hired to the same job at Mississippi State.

Kennedy just finished his third season with the Razorbacks. It didn’t go well.

Arkansas gave up a school-record 47 sacks to rank 129th in FBS out of 133 teams. The Hogs’ rushing attack averaged just 139 yards per game, barely inside the top 100 and its lowest team total since 2012.

Head coach Sam Pittman said Thursday at the introductory press conference for offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino that he expected additional staff changes. Less than 24 hours later, Kennedy is reportedly out.

The hire does make sense outside of 2023. Arkansas was seventh in the nation in rushing offense in both 2022 and 2021 with sack totals at 31 and 30 those two seasons.

Arkansas Preseason Depth Chart – Offensive Line

As the Hogs begin game prep for the opener against Western Carolina, here’s where the offensive line depth chart stands.

Throughout fall camp, Sam Pittman didn’t shy away from talking about Arkansas’ offensive line struggles.

Following the departures of Ricky Stromberg and Dalton Wagner to the NFL, the Hogs had to do some shuffling on up front. Arkansas’ projected two-deep, includes three seniors, one junior and three sophomores. Of the players in the two-deep, only five have experience playing against SEC competition.

The majority of that experience lies on the interior of the offensive line, where senior guard [autotag]Brady Latham[/autotag], senior center [autotag]Beaux Limmer[/autotag] and junior transfer guard [autotag]Josh Braun[/autotag] are projected to lead. At the tackle spot is where offensive line coach [autotag]Cody Kennedy[/autotag] could have issues.

Arkansas will be relying on sophomores [autotag]Patrick Kutas[/autotag] and [autotag]Devon Manuel[/autotag], who have yet to get meaningful snaps against SEC opponents. That’s where a lot of the offensive line’s highly-publicized pass protection struggles stemmed from during fall camp.

Now, things aren’t always as bad as they seem and [autotag]Cody Kennedy[/autotag]’s got a lot of talent for his third season in Fayetteville. But the pressure is on. Arkansas has KJ Jefferson and Rocket Sanders to lead a high-octane offensive attack, but that won’t mean anything if they don’t have help up front.

Let’s take a deeper look at the offensive line’s depth chart ahead of week one.

Arkansas freshman Chamblee making most of opportunity in camp

Andrew Chamblee is making the most of the opportunity he’s been given in camp thus far, and he may just take it and run with it.

With sophomore Devon Manuel, Arkansas’ presumed starter at left tackle, temporarily sidelined with an injury this week, redshirt freshman Andrew Chamblee is making the most of his opportunity getting reps with the first team.

The 6-foot-6, 304-pound Maumelle native has stepped right in and caught the eye of offensive line coach Cody Kennedy, with his technique and nimble footwork.

“In all honesty, after the three practices that he’s been there, I feel exponentially more confident in Andrew Chamblee,” said Kennedy, who also praised Chamblee’s effort in Saturday’s first fall  scrimmage. “He’s done a really, really good job filling that role, but hats off to the D-line and those guys too. He can’t make the mistakes he makes with the twos, with the ones, and it flies. You know what I’m saying?

“There’s a level of error there when you get up to the ones where you can’t get by. There are some things where your athletic ability can take over when you’re a little bit more athletic than they guy, but when everything is even you have to trust in your training and you have to trust your technique.”

After a stellar career at Maumelle, Chamblee was a prized 4-star recruit, ranked the third-best player in the state and the No. 23 offensive tackle in the nation, according to 247 Sports. He saw limited game action last season, preserving his four years of eligibility, but used the time to improve his skills and learn the system.

“He’s learned that going up to the ones and playing next to guys like Brady and Beaux and seeing how they handle their business and how he kind of has to transform into that and step up to that level,” Kennedy said.

Chamblee has seized the opportunity to shine with the first team while Manuel is out, but he may soon be relegated back to his reserve spot. Still, he has his sights set on a starting job, and will have to continue improving and performing at a high level to make that happen.

Kennedy knows competition helps motivate everyone involved to strive for excellence, so he is thrilled to see his young players compete at a higher level.

“He’s doing a really, really good job in there filling that void while Devon is out, and going after the spot,” Kennedy said. “That’s the conversation we had. You go in there and perform at an elite level and you might not have to give it back. That’s the thing for him. He’s done a good job transforming his body in the weight room as well in terms of being able to handle power rushes and utilize his hands better.

“Those are things he’s working on. He’s playing strong with his hands and obviously with the frame he has he’s playing long. That’s one big thing we talk about with his strike and his hand usage is being able to play long and utilize that frame that he does have.”

Arkansas Football: Offseason Depth Chart – Offensive Line

Arkansas needed to re-tool their offensive line this offseason, so here’s a glance at what the depth chart looks like ahead of next season.

We know that Arkansas will have a ton of weapons on offense next season, especially with the return of both KJ Jefferson and Rocket Sanders. However, that won’t mean much if the Razorbacks can’t get some solid play from another veteran-led offensive line.

In Arkansas’ projected two-deep, they’ll have three seniors, one junior and three sophomores, with five of them having SEC experience.

Offensive line coach [autotag]Cody Kennedy[/autotag] is entering his third full-time season in Fayetteville. Last year’s offensive line was a little more experienced than this year’s bunch following the departures of Ricky Stromberg (drafted to Washington in third round of NFL Draft) and Dalton Wagner (signed free agent deal with Las Vegas).

With Stromberg gone, Kennedy needed to do some re-shuffling up front to find an experienced center and help some new pieces fit seamlessly.

Here’s a glance at the two-deep for Arkansas’ offensive line entering next season.

Arkansas among five SEC teams to make Joe Moore Award honor roll

Some praise for the offensive line is well earned.

The big boys upfront for the Arkansas Razorbacks is starting to garner some recognition. The Joe Moore Award given to the nation’s best offensive line announced its midseason honor roll. In all, 22 offensive line units were among the best in the nation. Five of those teams reside in the SEC, and three in the SEC West.

Offensive line coach Cody Kennedy, who is in his second year with the Razorbacks, was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award last season. His unit ranks second in the SEC with 240 yards per game. Arkansas ranks No. 11 in FBS. The offensive line has allowed 11 sacks this season and is No. 5 in the SEC in total offense.

The list of SEC teams on the Joe Moore Award midseason honor roll:

Four of the five teams are among the conference’s top five rushing offenses. The Bulldogs check in at No. 6 with 196.7 yards per game. More positive play from the guys on the offensive line can only result in more wins this season. Arkansas has started the same five in all seven of their games this season.

The next test will come against the Auburn Tigers on Oct. 29 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The running game should be geared up for this game given that the Tigers surrendered 448 yards on the ground to Ole Miss and 578 yards of total offense in that game.
