Packers release WR Jeff Cotton to make room for signing of WR Cody Chrest

The Packers are releasing WR Jeff Cotton to make room for Cody Chrest, a new signing at WR.

The Green Bay Packers are swapping wide receivers on the 90-man roster to open training camp. Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers released receiver Jeff Cotton to make room for the signing of wide receiver Cody Chrest, a rookie out of Sam Houston State.

Aaron Wilson first reported the signing of Chrest, who worked out for the Packers on Tuesday.

Cotton, who was the oldest receiver on the Packers roster at 26 years old, initially signed to the team’s practice squad on Nov. 9 of 2022. He spent the final nine weeks of the 2022 season on the practice squad and was re-signed on a futures deal in January.

The Packers placed Cotton on the physically unable to perform list to open training camp, meaning he failed a physical due to an undisclosed injury. With rookie Grant DuBose on the non-football injury list with a back injury, the Packers likely needed more depth at receiver to open camp.

Chrest (6-0, 193) spent four seasons at Harvard before transferring to Sam Houston State. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds and has a Relative Athletic Score of 9.77 out of 10.0. Before joining the Packers, Chrest spent time with Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent this offseason.

Chrest will wear Cotton’s former number, No. 82.

Cotton originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Arizona Cardinals.

Packers to sign rookie WR Cody Chrest after workout Tuesday

The Packers are expected to sign rookie WR Cody Chrest after a workout on Tuesday.

The Green Bay Packers, who are down two receivers to injuries to open training camp, will sign rookie receiver Cody Chrest after a workout with the team on Tuesday, per Aaron Wilson.

The Packers’ roster is at 90 players, meaning a corresponding move will be required before Chrest is officially added.

An undrafted free agent out of Sam Houston State, Chrest spent time with the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers following the 2023 draft but was released by both teams.

Adding Chrest would give the Packers another receiver to evaluate while Jeff Cotton (PUP list) and Grant DuBose (NFI list) get healthy.

Before transferring to Sam Houston State, Chrest broke out as a senior at Harvard in 2019 with 45 catches for 706 yards and five scores. Over three seasons at Sam Houston, Chrest caught 131 passes for 1,715 yards and nine touchdowns.

Chrest produced a Relative Athletic Score of 9.77 out of 10.0. At 6-0 and 193 pounds, he hit 38″ in the vertical leap, finished the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds and completed the three-cone drill in 6.77 seconds. While a little light, his measurables match what the Packers generally look for in wide receivers.

The Packers worked out quarterback Jacob Eason and four total receivers (including Chrest) on Tuesday.

Colts make several roster moves after rookie minicamp

Indy added four and waived four following rookie minicamp.

The Indianapolis Colts signed four undrafted rookie free agents and waived another four players following the team’s rookie minicamp, the team announced Monday.

Among the new players being brought in following a tryout at rookie minicamp include wide receiver Kody Case (Illinois), wide receiver Tyler Adams (Butler), defensive tackle Jamal Woods (Illinois) and offensive tackle Matthew Vnderslice (Northern Iowa).

In corresponding moves, the Colts waived wide receiver Cody Chrest, cornerback Tyler Richardson, running back Titus Swen and wide receiver Braxton Westfield.
