UT recruiting update: How Tennessee commits fared under the Friday night lights

These Tennessee commits were in action for their high school football teams.

The 2020 high school football season is officially over in the state of Tennessee, as state championships were held in Cookeville over the weekend.

Some surrounding states are still in action, but the majority of high school football student-athletes are finished. A few Tennessee commits were still playing last weekend, whether it was for a state title or playoffs in another state.

Below is a rundown of what Tennessee commits did for their high school football teams last Friday.

UT recruiting update: How Tennessee commits fared under the Friday night lights

A few Tennessee commits are still in action with their high school football seasons.

Tennessee’s 2021 recruiting class has taken some hits recently with decommitments of 4-star defensive back Damarius McGhee and 5-star linebacker Terrence Lewis.

A few prospects, however, have announced they are locked into their commitment. Prospects like Kaidon Salter, Aaron Willis and Dylan Brooks do not appear to be going anywhere as the early signing period quickly approaches.

The list of Tennessee players still playing high school football is dwindling, as most states wind down the football season. Here is a rundown of a few Tennessee commits that were in action last Friday.

Watch: Landry Jones gets picked off by one-time substitute teacher

Landry Jones threw a pass and former substitute teacher Cody Brown picked it off in the XFL Texas Throwdown.

The XFL is full of players trying to make their way in football. It may not be the NFL, but for most it beats working in the real world. Cody Brown of the Dallas Renegades picked off former Pittsburgh Steeler and current Houston Roughneck QB Landry Jones Sunday in the Texas Throwdown.

Not unusual for a DB to make an interception. However, this DB used to be a substitute teacher.

FOX sideline reporter Jenny Taft got to the DB and mentioned his former gig as a substitute teacher during the conversation.

The lesson for Landry Jones: Don’t pick on Cody Brown. Or anyone else in the Dallas secondary. Jones had an unfortunate hat trick in the first quarter, throwing three interceptions.

Watch: Former Jags DB Cody Brown drops the hammer in XFL debut

A former Jaguar is already making his impact in the XFL in Cody Brown.

It didn’t take long for a former Jacksonville Jaguar to show up in the highlights for the Xtreme Football League. Former Jags defensive back Cody Brown found himself as a popular name on social media after making a big-time hit in the second game of the XFL’s relaunch between the Houston Roughnecks and Los Angeles Wildcats.

In an attempt at the end zone by the Wildcats, Brown was able to  come from over the top to lay a massive hit on receiver Jordan Smallwood to prevent a touchdown that would’ve given the Wildcats the lead. The cornerback covering Smallwood slipped, so it would’ve been an easy catch but with the quarterback putting a little too much air on the ball, Brown was able to get there to make the highlight play.

Afterward, the XFL reviewed the hit and deemed it legal as Brown made contact with the helmet, but didn’t launch at the receiver and led with his shoulder.

Brown signed with the Jags last April after a solid run with the Salt Lake City Stallions of the Alliance of American Football League. He was only on the team for a little over a month but it’s certainly good to see him having success after time in the NFL.

As for the game, the Roughnecks ended up winning the game 37-17.
