5. Who is, technically, overrated in the 2022 Coaches Poll?

Everyone too easily fires out the terms overrated and underrated when it comes to teams, players, tacos, and just about every other aspect of life. But for something to be overrated, it has to be rated.

The 2022 college football teams were just rated in the Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll, and here are the five teams who appear to be ranked a tad bit too high.

No. 7 Texas A&M
This is a whole lot of respect being given to a team that has all the talent in the world, but is really, really, really young. Are the skill players strong enough? Can the team be more consistent? Can all the superstar recruits make an impact right away? This is hardly an egregiously high ranking, but top ten is a wee bit of a push for right now.
A&M Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

– CFN 2022 Preseason Rankings 1-131

No. 10 Baylor
To be totally fair to the Coaches Poll, we have a chronic Baylor underrating problem, so this might just be dead on right. However, a top ten preseason nod is too much love considering the defending Big 12 champs have a whole lot of reworking and tweaking to do.
Baylor Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

No. 16 Pitt
Like Baylor, there’s a good chance we might be missing what everyone else is seeing. The pass rush will be fantastic, and Kedon Slovis is a fine replacement for Kenny Pickett, but for a team that found lightning in a bottle last season, this top 16 ranking is assuming it’ll all happen again. It’s a top 25 team, but 16 is a tad high.
Pitt Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

2022 Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll

No. 19 Wake Forest
Wake Forest will put up big numbers, be a ton of fun, and it’ll win a lot of games against the teams it’s supposed to beat, and one or two against the good teams, too. However, is it better than Wisconsin, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Ole Miss? Not really. Is it better than unranked Iowa, Penn State, Tennessee, BYU, LSU, or Auburn? Not really. Is it better than North Carolina, who’s technically ranked 33rd? Ehhhh.
Wake Forest Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

No. 22 Cincinnati
It’s a good Cincinnati team, but a whole lot of great parts are gone – being ahead of Arkansas, Iowa, and a slew of other good Power Five programs is a bit too much respect. 22 isn’t terribly far off, but the ranking assumes it’s the best Group of Five program coming into the season. At the moment, UCF is close, Boise State and San Diego State are in that mix, and Houston – at least from the preseason look – should be higher than 25.

5. Who is, technically, overrated in the 2021 Coaches Poll?

Who’s overrated? FWIW, according to the CFN 2021 Preseason Rankings 1-130 – based on how good the teams are to start the season – the five most overrated teams are …

No. 7 Notre Dame
It’s hardly an egregious call considering the Irish reload now under Brian Kelly, but it’s a tad too high – at least to start the season. The offensive line is being rebuilt, Jack Coan is a college quarterback downgrade from Ian Book, and overall – to nitpick a bit too much – this is a top 15ish team more than top seven.
Notre Dame Preview

No. 10 Cincinnati
Power Five Snob Alert, Part 1. You beat as many Power Five teams in 2020 as Cincinnati did – but this is about 2021, of course. It’s a great team that really could beat Indiana and Notre Dame, but top ten overall is getting a tad carried away – for now. It’s a top 25 team to be sure, but … UCF might be every bit as strong in the AAC.
Cincinnati Preview

No. 16 Miami
Miami is just renting this space. In a perfect world, the Coaches Poll – and all polls – don’t punish teams for losing to the star of stars. Alabama is the overwhelming No. 1 in the Coaches Poll, it’s going to win the opener by a gajillion, and that means the Canes will end up where it probably should be preseason rankings-wise – around 25 – going into Week 2
Miami Preview

2021 Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll

No. 23 Louisiana
Power Five Snob Alert, Part 2. No one championed the Ragin’ Cajuns more than I did after they were disrespected in poll after poll despite beating Iowa State in the opener, but … 1) I defy 94% of the pollsters to name one of the two NFL-caliber running backs the team lost. 2) Coastal Carolina is probably better. 3) Appalachian State is probably better – and it only got four votes.
Louisiana Preview

No. 24 Coastal Carolina
Power Five Snob Alert, Part 3. More on this later on, but if you’re really basing this on last year – which isn’t right, pollsters – Liberty beat the Chanticleers in the Cure Bowl, gets almost everyone back, and is technically ranked 30th. 2021 Liberty should be better than 2021 Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina Preview

5. Who is, technically, overrated in the Coaches Poll?

It’s way too easy and lazy to call something overrated or underrated, unless someone is actually doing the rating. The Coaches’ Poll just did the rating and rankings.

So who’s overrated? At least, according to the CFN Preseason Team Rankings – based on how good the teams are to start the season – the five most overrated teams are …

No. 13 Texas A&M
Call this the We Know Who The Starting Quarterback Is ranking. The Aggies are very, very good, and they have the experience and talent to be right there in the mix for big things around QB Kellen Mond, but this is still a team that should be around the 20s going into the season with 13 being a humongous ranking from the coaches.
Texas A&M Preview

No. 16 Oklahoma State
Call this the We Know Who The Superstar Running Back Is ranking. We’re quibbling here. Oklahoma State is loaded with as much offensive firepower as anyone in the country starting with RB Chuba Hubbard. But that defense … it’s fine. Not great, but fine. The Cowboys should be around the 20s behind USC, Iowa, and others. Being this close to the top 15 is a wee bit of a stretch.
Oklahoma State Preview

[lawrence-related id=517336]

No. 21 UCF
There’s no real beef with the ranking – there are about 15 teams that could’ve made the top 25, and UCF is one of them. Of course the team can hang with just about anyone, but this is more of a fringe top 25-team in terms of overall depth and talent – the O line needs a little time before it crushes – than a sure-thing in the 25. Remember, there’s a difference between playing in the AAC and dealing with the weekly grind of a Power Five league. The bigger problem is with …
UCF Preview

No. 22 Cincinnati
This is a massive amount of love for a team whose calling card last year was a win over a mediocre UCLA and a bowl win over a Boston College program in transition. The passing game is just okay, the offensive line is just okay, and the depth is just okay. This is a top 40ish team with 22 a really, really big reach.
Cincinnati Preview

CFN 2020 Preseason Rankings 1-130

No. 25 Iowa State
Sort of like Texas A&M this year, in general, preseason voters like to know who the starting quarterback is, especially if he’s a superstar. The voters know Brock Purdy, but Iowa State at 25 is a whole lot of love. There’s experience, and this is hardly anything that bad, but the Cyclones should be around the 30s and snuck in.
Iowa State Preview
