So here’s the funky part about the 2010s. 2012 Ohio State went 12-0 but was on probation. It didn’t go to a bowl, and by the rules of the Coaches Poll wasn’t ranked. That would’ve easily broken the tie at No. 2, but no one was touching Alabama with four national titles and seven top ten finishes in the decade.

The 1990s brought two interesting twists. 1990 came the change from the UPI Coaches Poll to the USA TODAY branding. In 1998, the BCS era started with the poll naming its national champion based on the team that won the BCS Championship. That clashed at times in the 2000s with the AP poll.

Florida State was knocking on the national championship door for several years under Bobby Bowden, and it finally kicked it in with national championships in 1993 and 1999.

Nebraska had a phenomenal run with the 1997 USA TODAY Coaches Poll national championship – Michigan got the AP title – along with the 1994 and 1995 titles, but Florida State finished in the top five in every year in the decade.

It was an interesting decade for the Coaches Poll with seven different national champions. Alabama won two of them and was in the mix year after year, and Arkansas didn’t win any, but was good enough to finish as the decade’s second-best team according to the rankings.

There was a ton of controversy in the 1970s when it came to national champions. The Coaches Poll didn’t start awarding its national title after bowl games until 1974. However …

1974 Oklahoma was on probation. The Sooners were the final No. 1 in the AP Poll, but the Coaches Poll didn’t rank teams on sanctions, meaning USC got the national title and Alabama ended up scoring more points overall to be the school of the 1970s.

With three national championships and an all-time great winning streak of 47 games in a row from 1953 to 1957, Oklahoma roared through the 1950s. It was by far the premier college football program of the decade, but a few other schools came up with national championships that still resonate today.

The bridesmaid and never the bride, Nebraska was fantastic throughout the 1980s but couldn’t break through and win the national title. Miami might have been the biggest star of the decade with three national championships, but the Huskers were a bit more consistent in the Coaches Poll rankings.

@ColFootballNews

Which college football programs are the greatest of all-time – or at least since 1950 – according to the UPI and USA TODAY Coaches final polls?

The AP Poll started in 1936, and the Coaches Poll came on 14 years later with UPI (United Press International) handling the job up until 1991 when USA TODAY took over.

Over the years, the Coaches Poll held just as much weight as the AP’s version, creating split national champions in some seasons with its own set of rules and guidelines.

There’s one key, funky difference between the two polling systems over the years. The Coaches Poll doesn’t rank teams on probation.

That started in 1974 after the 1973 Oklahoma Sooners finished the season No. 2 despite being penalized for past transgressions. So in 1974 when OU went 11-0 and finished the season as the AP’s national champion, USC won the UPI Coaches Poll national title – the Sooners weren’t even ranked.

But Oklahoma wasn’t alone. Ohio State – you’ll see in a moment how much probation matters – didn’t see its 2012 12-0 season get ranked.

Alabama – 2002 and 1995 – wasn’t ranked despite finishing in the top 20 of the respective AP polls for those seasons. Others like Auburn (1979, 1993), Clemson (1982, 1983), and Miami  (1981, 1995) likely would’ve been higher, too, if their great seasons were ranked.

We started from scratch from when we did this a few years ago and reran all the numbers. Like we did with the AP rankings, CFN devised a scoring system giving every UPI/USA TODAY national champion 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom of the top 20 in the early years, and then it became the top 25 after USA TODAY took over.
