Report: Chiefs to pick up club option for LB Damien Wilson

A new report says the Chiefs will pick up a club option on LB Damien Wilson.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made their final decision regarding club options for the 2020 NFL season.

Earlier today it was reported that RB Damien Williams would have his club option picked up by the team. Now, another Damien will see his option picked up by Kansas City, but this time it’s on the defensive side of the ball.

According to Kansas City Star beat writer Herbie Teope, the Chiefs plan to exercise LB Damien Wilson’s club option. Of the three players who had club options with the Chiefs for 2020, Wilson’s was one of the more expensive contracts with $3.2 million due.

Wilson was one of the newcomers who helped transform the Kansas City defense during the 2020 season. His steady play on 714 defensive snaps resulted in 81 total tackles, which was good for the second-most on the team behind his fellow linebacker Anthony Hitchens.

This lessens the Chiefs’ need at the linebacker position heading into the 2020 NFL draft. However, they could still target the position early with Reggie Ragland and Darron Lee expected to depart in free agency.

Report: Chiefs to pick up club option for RB Damien Williams

Damien Williams will return to the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2020 NFL season according to a new report.

The Kansas City Chiefs have some housekeeping to do ahead of the NFL’s free agency period.

Some of that housekeeping includes decisions on contract options for three players. The Chiefs have already decided they won’t pick up the option for offensive lineman Cam Erving. Now, the team has come to a decision on a key player.

According to a new report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Kansas City plans to pick up the club option for RB Damien Williams. The option will cost them $2.3 million, which is a deal considering the role Williams has played during the past two postseasons with the Chiefs. He’s recorded 355 rushing yards, 185 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns in just five postseason games appearances with Kansas City. Most importantly, Williams had the game-sealing touchdown in Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers.

Williams first joined the Chiefs in free agency in 2018. He’s appeared in 27 regular-season games since then, starting in nine of them. He was named the starting RB for Kansas City ahead of the 2019 NFL season by offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. However, Williams took a backseat to LeSean McCoy early in the season after suffering an injury.

By the end of the 2019 season, the usage of Williams suggests he earned the starting role again. He’ll play a significant part in the rushing attack in the 2020 season if healthy, but the lack of a long-term deal suggests the Chiefs may opt for a different route after the 2020 season.

The Chiefs have one more decision to make regarding option years. That decision is on LB Damien Wilson, who is due to make $2.7 million in 2020.

Report: Chiefs not expected to pick up club option for OL Cam Erving

Cam Erving joined the Kansas City Chiefs via trade in 2017.

The Kansas City Chiefs have three players with club options for the 2020 season. They’ll have to decide whether they want to bring each of those players back and it appears we already have one decision.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor, the Chiefs are not expected to pick up the 2020 option for versatile offensive lineman Cameron Erving. He started eight games for Kansas City this season with an injury to LT Eric Fisher.

The 27-year-old Erving joined the Chiefs via trade in 2017, just before the start of the NFL season. He’s since appeared in 40 games with Kansas City as one of their most valuable reserve players along the offensive line.

The Chiefs currently have several players at the position who are under contract for the 2020 season who could possibly serve as replacements. Those players include Martinas Rankin, Jackson Barton and Greg Senat. Rankin was acquired at the start of the season in a trade sending Carlos Hyde to the Texans. Barton was signed off the Colts practice squad following an injury to Rankin. Senat was claimed off waivers early in the season, but was sent to injured reserve ahead of Week 8.

The decision to let Erving go will free up $3.2 million in cap space for the 2020 season. They’ll still have to find ways to create more salary cap space this offseason. The front office will need to decide on club options for both RB Damien Williams and LB Damien Wilson before the new league year begins in March.
