Clemson was delivered another blow as the injuries continue to pile up.

After catching a 25-yard pass in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against UConn, Justyn Ross limped off the field injured. The redshirt junior wide receiver did not return.

Instead, he was on the sidelines in street clothes and on crutches, while sporting a boot on his injured left foot.

It’s yet another injury for the talented wideout. As of Saturday, Ross has 46 receptions with 514 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions on the season.

Tigers hold commanding lead after sloppy half of play

Clemson heads into the break holding onto a commanding 30-7 lead, but it certainly wasn’t all pretty.

The Tigers punted just once in the first half, but an offense that had taken a step forward took a backseat to another standout defensive performance. Clemson’s defense accounted for six sacks and a Mario Goodrich, Jr. interception.

They held the Huskies to -49 rushing yards on 14 attempts. UConn had 41 yards of total offense in the first half. Although Clemson wasn’t much better offensively. The Tigers had 287 yards of offense, but it came on a total of 55 first-half offensive plays.

The Tigers were able to extend their lead to 23 after D.J. Uiagalelei connected with his high school teammate and newfound favorite target, Beaux Collins, for a 32-yard touchdown.

Of course, the Tigers weren’t without their faults. They gave up a special teams touchdown and Uiagalelei threw his seventh interception of the season. And on top of that, Justyn Ross left the game injured.

The redshirt junior receiver returned to the sidelines on crutches and in street clothes, sporting a boot on his injured left foot. That wasn’t the only injury, though. The cart was brought out for sophomore linebacker Sergio Allen, who was injured on a kickoff midway through the second quarter.

Uiagalelei, clearly hampered by his PCL strain, went just 17-of-37 with 217 yards passing. He completed just 46% of his passes.

Clemson was able to move the ball down the field, but it didn’t come at will. Instead, it was the B.T. Potter show. Clemson’s senior kicker went 3-of-3 on field goals in the first half, accounting for 9 of the team’s 30 first-half points.

Throughout the first half, Clemson experimented with different offensive line combinations. Marcus Tate shifted out to his natural position (left tackle), while Bryn Tucker took over the left guard position and Mitchell Mayes got some work on the right side.

Though they were both dressed and seemingly healthy, neither Will Shipley nor Kobe Pace saw any action throughout Saturday’s opening frame. It was Phil Mafah and Darien Rencher who took the reins of the backfield for the Tigers, combining for 15 yards on 13 carries.

Additionally, Taisun Phommachanch scored his first-career rushing touchdown to give Clemson a 17-7 lead. Phommachanch led the rushing attack with 16 yards on three carries. He also completed one pass for 33 yards to Dacari Collins, setting up his own score.

Clemson’s afternoon got off to a rude awakening after UConn returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. After dropping the kick on the ground, UConn’s kick returner, Brian Brewton, picked up the football and scampered 99 yards for a touchdown.

Even though the Huskies jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, the Tigers were able to take control of the game. That was after Will Swinney perfectly executed a fake field goal to score his second career touchdown, giving Clemson a 10-7 lead.

The Tigers weren’t done there, though. UConn quickly went three-and-out after Tyler Davis sacked Huskies’ quarterback Jack Zergiotis for a loss of nine yards. On the ensuing offensive possession, the Tiger scored in less than two minutes, taking six plays to go 66 yards and take a 17-7 lead.

From there, Clemson scored 13 unanswered points.

The Tigers will receive the second-half opening kickoff.

Clemson gets tricky to take the lead

After giving up a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown to start things off, Clemson answered with a field goal.

Down 7-3, the Tigers looked to be settling for another field goal. Instead, Clemson had a trick up its sleeve. Rather than holding for B.T. Potter, Will Swinney took the snap and scampered into the end zone for his second career touchdown.

Potter drilled the extra point to cap off an 11-play, 78-yard drive, which took 3 minutes and 46 seconds.

D.J. Uiagalelei threw for 65 yards on Clemson’s touchdown drive. The sophomore quarterback completed passes of 11, 23 and 25 yards to E.J. Williams, Dacari Collins and Justyn Ross, respectively.

Though, Ross limped off the field and had to be helped to the locker room. He appeared to suffer a leg injury and was in serious pain.

Clemson has announced which players will be unavailable for today’s game against UConn, including two starters.

Offensive lineman Will Putnam, cornerback Andrew Booth, Jr. and safety Jalyn Phillips are among players that began the week on the depth chart that will not be available because of injuries, COVID-19 protocols or other undisclosed reasons.

The absence of Putnam, who will miss his second straight game because of an ankle injury, isn’t a surprise. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said early in the week that Putnam likely would not play. It puts Mason Trotter in line for his second straight start at right guard.

Clemson is likely being cautious with Booth after he suffered a “stinger” in the team’s 30-24 win over Louisville last Saturday.

Official visitors on tap for Clemson-UConn

Clemson is getting ready for a big recruiting weekend, as the Tigers will play host to a bunch of official visitors for Saturday’s game against UConn.

Most if not all of Clemson’s commitments in the 2022 class are expected to take their official visits, including Austin (Texas) Westlake five-star quarterback Cade Klubnik and IMG Academy standouts Jihaad Campbell, Daylen Everette and Keon Sabb, among others.

The only commit that won’t be able to make it is Toriano Pride. The four-star cornerback pledge from East St. Louis (Ill.) High School has a playoff game scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Preferred walk-on commits will be on campus as well, though it won’t be for an official visit.

While Clemson’s official visitor list is largely comprised of commits, the Tigers are slated to welcome a high-profile uncommitted official visitor in the 2022 class as well in Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School four-star wide receiver Andre Greene Jr.

“Looking forward to getting back to Clemson,” Greene told The Clemson Insider last month. “Because of my school football schedule, I won’t be able to make the game. However, I feel it is important to get back there just to sit down with the coaching staff one last time before I make my final decision.”

Greene will not be able to make it for Saturday’s noon kickoff, but he still plans on making the trip for what could prove to be a critical official visit.

Greene made his way back to Clemson in July for the program’s All In Cookout after participating in the Dabo Swinney Camp as well. He publicly disclosed last week that he is down to Clemson, Georgia and North Carolina, and will announce his decision on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Originally, Jennings (La.) four-star running back Trevor Etienne, of course, the younger brother of Travis Etienne, was supposed to be in attendance for Saturday’s game. However, Trevor has a playoff game on the road on Friday night, so his status is up in the air at the moment.

Trevor was last on campus for the Swinney Camp and Elite Retreat in June, In August, he released a top five featuring Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and LSU.

Some big-time prospects in future classes planning to unofficially visit Clemson this weekend are Warner Robins (Ga.) 2023 five-star defensive lineman Vic Burley, Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.) 2023 four-star offensive tackle Markee Anderson, Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.) 2023 four-star quarterback Dylan Lonergan, Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) 2023 linebacker/safety Wade Woodaz, Pace Academy (Atlanta) 2024 four-star defensive lineman Hevin Brown-Shuler and Chapin (S.C.) 2024 four-star quarterback Jayden Bradford.

As for Bradford, he can’t wait to get back on campus this weekend for what will be a family affair.

“I’m really excited,” he told TCI. “I’m pretty sure my whole family’s going to go up there. My grandma is a huge Clemson fan, so we’re just going to go up there as a family and thank God for the opportunity and enjoy the moment.”
